Ebay sellers putting location as UK when it's not

This really gives me the rage.

Last night I ordered something on eBay and I always filter the products when I search to UK only, normally because I need the specific item quickly. So I checked the location which said Birmingham and ordered but when I went to check the payment had been taken from PayPal I seen that it had and the sellers name was written in Chinese

So obviously went and checked sellers legal details on eBay and it was Xian, China.

Surely sellers should not be able to list a UK location when they are actually based elsewhere.

I can normally pick this up as the delivery time is usually a few weeks away but this wasn't the case. I really did give the rage as I needed the product urgently and secondly I don't want a product which may be contaminated with a virus, I know I'm being irrational with this part!!!

I have asked for the order to be cancelled but just wish sellers were not allowed to do this.

Well the virus part is a bit crazy, but you're not wrong for wanting them to tell the truth. Made that mistake before with clothes, it says it's in Britain, turns out it came from China. Their sizes are not the same.

makingmiracles · 07/02/2020 07:34

I agree, infuriates me too, I buy plenty from China etc when I don’t mind how long it takes-in some cases it’s been 2-3months!! But when I need something now I don’t expect to be told it’s based here then not receive it for 6weeks!! Checking feedback usually helps a little as others may have left negs for long delivery but it seems like they don’t get into any trouble with eBay despite lying about their location.

Robstersgirl · 07/02/2020 07:35

They often have a hub over here. I’ve had the same and item turned up in a couple of days so clearly not from China. YABU re viruses.

Titective · 07/02/2020 07:35

I reported this to Ebay but they didn't care. Drives me nuts.

MashedSpud · 07/02/2020 07:36

When you search on eBay also highlight “click & collect”. It filters out the liars.

You even have to check websites with trustpilot now because some do the same thing. I bought a t shirt from one who had a fake uk address and phone number listed on their .co.uk website. It was from China.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 07/02/2020 07:37

Its rubbish as I specifically narrow the search to uk as I want a quick delivery time etc.

Having to sort through pages with long delivery makes ebay not really useable for many items.

LouisaJenny · 07/02/2020 07:37

YABVU re the virus.

However, I’ve had this happen before - says in UK but Chinese writing. Still arrived within a couple of days.

Rubychard · 07/02/2020 07:40

This gives me the rage. I filter out non uk sellers and sometimes i still end up buying things from China, which obviously takes longer. I have read somewhere that some sellers maintain a business address in the uk in order to legitimately clAim that they are a uk seller.

I think you’re being a bit irrrational about virus contamination tho.

Fr0g · 07/02/2020 07:46

I get more irritated by items that come up with an apparently low price, then on clicking through find that the headline price is for an unrelated item/trial size/copy of the instructions, etc, and the cost of the item you've searched for is several times higher.

but also wish there was a 'deliver within x days' option

MyCatScaresDogs · 07/02/2020 07:48

Yep, this happened to me before Christmas. Item was posted from the UK but could only be returned to China. Really not on. (Not least because the return address was completely in Chinese and the cost of returning the item would have been prohibitive despite it being faulty...)

BronteSisters · 07/02/2020 08:27

The virus part reall is OTT. Even if it was UK based, imost items still originate in China. They're a one of the worlds biggest manufacturers. And many large Chinese owned companies have UK hubs. Warehouses stocked over here so you get the cheap Chinese prices without the Chinese shopping wait.

You can't have it both ways. Chinese prices but UK made. It doesn't work like that.

BronteSisters · 07/02/2020 08:32

For anyone who has reported a seller for claiming to send items from the UK, who has clearly sent the item from within the UK delivering within a few days as is usual for deliveries in the UK and almost impossible to be mailed from China, how'd that go for you?

noenergy · 07/02/2020 09:01

I know I'm being unreasonable about the virus.

The seller has refunded me obviously because they are not based here, they would have said to me if they were in the UK

Like others have said, it is mostly from China anyway, but some may have a UK hub and have some items in stock here, others will be posted directly from China. Probably a mix and it varies. They usually give an estimated delivery time when you order though.

Ionacat · 07/02/2020 09:18

I ordered something that had an order location as UK but took longer to come than it said and then had a customs label on it with a tracking number that matched mine.
It wasn’t as described and the seller refused to let me return saying costs would be prohibitive. I raised a dispute with eBay uploaded pictures of the listing saying UK and the customs declaration with matching numbers. I got a full refund within hours and got to keep the item as well. (Not that I wanted it!)

Titective · 07/02/2020 21:34

@BronteSisters they weren't interested in the slightest.

I'd deliberately bought from a UK based seller because the previous similar item I was replacing had developed a fault. And this one was faulty when it arrived. So I tried to return it but turns out the seller was in China. Offered me a range of refunds ranging from 25% up to finally 100%. The item is junk. I wonder how many pieces of junk the seller ships.
