To feel tired all the time?

Recently I’ve just been feeling exhausted every day and it doesn’t seem to make a difference how much sleep I have.

I suffered a loss last year and that might be impacting on me mentally, I have a stressful job and my DH can be hard work.

I don’t know if I’m just mentally drained or there’s something more serious going on. Several days recently I’ve been at work and just felt like I’ve got to a point (usually in the afternoon) where I have no energy or concentration to get things done.

I know you can’t diagnose me or anything! I just wondered whether anyone else has had this.

Since yesterday I’ve been thinking of seeing the GP but no way could I go today as I feel so behind at work. I’ve also been feeling a bit headachey, weak and lighthearted from time to time for a couple of weeks.

Not pregnant. AF is currently visiting.

Go and see your GP.

My mum was full of energy usually then suddenly she was having a nap in the afternoons and constantly exhausted. This went on for a month and then she developed a nasty chest infection. Then she died of leukaemia 10 days later.

I'm not saying this because I think you have leukaemia but just to illustrate how important it is to see your doctor if something changes. It's probably nothing but it could be something.

Vulpine · 07/02/2020 06:48

Exercise can often help

YogaSleepandFood · 07/02/2020 06:49

@Oysterbabe I’m really sorry about your Mum and that’s one frightening reply!

@Vulpine Yes I do find exercise us usually helps me but I haven’t even felt up to that recently

I went to my gp over the very same thing last week. She tested my bloods for thyroid, blood sugars, vits b + d and s full blood count along with liver & kidney.

They're all fine apart from vit d so I have to take a supplement and she's also put me on citalopram to see if that makes a difference.

YogaSleepandFood · 07/02/2020 07:11

@TwoZeroTwoZero I was low on vitamin D a couple of years ago so could be that. It didn’t occur to me as I didn’t realise it has such an effect. Hope that helps you. I will go to the GP next week!

It’s worth seeing your GP. I had something similar, I could get through work but I was exhausted in the evenings. Blood tests showed low ferritin levels, I feel loads better after starting iron tablets.

Sorry about your Mum Oysterbabe Flowers

mumsie2019 · 07/02/2020 07:24

Go to your gp visit as soon as you can to get a check up.
Explain your concerns and ask for blood tests you could be anaemic.

marriednotdead · 07/02/2020 07:25

I’ve been as you describe for 2-3 years at least. Low vit D at one point, prescribed a course of CBT at another.
Last spring an exasperated locum suggested perhaps I needed a holiday. Two weeks away in the summer and I still felt rubbish.
I finally lost it when yet another set of bloods came back ‘normal’. I’d done a lot of desperate googling and this time the GP listened and agreed a referral to rheumatologist. As I suspected, I’ve got fibromyalgia.
There are other options that it mimics such as thyroid, depression, menopause, low vitamins and once they’ve ruled those out, fibromyalgia is what’s left.
Keep pushing, you know what you used to feel like and normal bloods doesn’t mean everything is ok.

Kim82 · 07/02/2020 07:30

I was exactly the same towards the end of last year so went to the GP, had bloods done and I was deficient in Vitamin D and B12. After a course of supplements and B12 injections I’m now back to normal and my energy levels are back up. I need the B12 jabs 3 monthly from now on and I’m on the Vit D supplements for another 4 months so hopefully I won’t feel like that again, it was bloody awful!

TheGlitterFairy · 07/02/2020 07:42

I hear you. Feel tired all the time. Not sleeping well at the mo though - so I don’t think this is helping.

TwoBlueFish · 07/02/2020 07:50

I was the same as you and was diagnosed as Vitamin D deficient, I’ve been told to take a supplement for life. I get Vitabiotics ultra vitamin D from Amazon. I’ve been taking it for 2 months so far and has definitely helped my tiredness.

The GP also tested by thyroid, blood pressure, hormones and all the usual blood tests.

orangejuicer · 07/02/2020 07:52

Anaemia? Would make AF worse too. Hope you get to see your gp soon.

orangejuicer · 07/02/2020 07:53

Ps sorry for your loss. It's hard.

YogaSleepandFood · 07/02/2020 07:57

@FaithInfinity Yeah I’m in til about 3:30-4 and then feel wiped out

@orangejuicer I wasn’t anaemic 6-12 months ago. Can that just happen?

I get quite horrendous PMT and have been feeling sick and headache through this AF but not sure I always do

It is a year since I lost my DD so I wonder if I’m just run down but it feels like a physical exhaustion or fatigue

I’m sorry to those of you who have had similar issues and diagnoses

ghostyslovesheets · 07/02/2020 08:01

Yes - like other posters it was B12 and D deficiency

Go and see your GP - it’s horrible feeling exhausted all the time

Jenny70 · 07/02/2020 08:08

Definitely get yourself checked. My 38 year old SIL with young kids was extremely tired, had very low iron. Had 2 months of iron supplements and was retested, still low. Went for colonoscopy and had Stage 4 bowel cancer already... 5 years on she is still battling the cancer, but living life to the full at the same time. If she'd not followed it up when she did, she wouldn't have made another year. I always thought I probably wouldn't have gone back after the first blood test, assuming iron levels would come good eventually.

Again, not to scare you, but if you've had low iron and it doesn't improve, follow it up. Better to find nothing than leave it and always wonder what might have been if you did act sooner.

YogaSleepandFood · 07/02/2020 08:28

I haven’t been anaemic for years but I do have digestion / bowel issues sometimes, not weird, like IBS, and a few people in my family have ulacitve colitis so I have thought maybe I should get that checked out too 🙈

I’m so sorry for your loss Flowers

I lost my DS last April and I’ve been finding I’m exhausted all the time. Since Christmas especially. I do think it’s worth seeing your GP as others have suggested.

For me it was a reduction in self care that wasn’t overtly noticeable to anybody else, this lead to a few Vitamin deficiencies and low Iron - I basically wasn’t feeding myself enough for quite a long time, I was eating but it was one small meal a day and that has been the most I can manage - otherwise I feel sick. I also have intermittent insomnia which doesn’t help. Then the grief on top of that which I felt I was managing since December - but really I think it’s not as intense emotionally but now it’s a case of emotional exhaustion instead that’s manifested as constant physical exhaustion (like even when I’ve had a good nights sleep my body feels like lead the next day).

Are you sleeping well enough generally? I hope you manage to see a GP soon and that it’s useful OP.

MollyButton · 07/02/2020 08:38

Definitely go to see your GP. Have you been tested for Coeliacs?
I'd also make sure you have access to the full results - you can ask for a print out or I have online access. Because if your results are just above the "trigger" point that could explain your issues.

Sossadtoday · 07/02/2020 08:43

The loss of a child is terrible, so sorry for you both on here. I don't think I would ever be able to move again so I imagine utter exhaustion would be totally normal under those circumstances Flowers

YogaSleepandFood · 07/02/2020 08:43

I’m so sorry for your loss too @NaviSprite

I have maybe mild insomnia on and off to where I have phases where I either can’t get to sleep for hours or wake up in the night / b early in the morning and then can’t get back to sleep. I think I don’t get enough sleep a lot of the time but this seems to be more than that

I think Christmas was hard and now the anniversary coming up

I think I eat okay but the worse I feel the less I exercise. I’m trying to eat better as I have a sweet tooth and feel worse when I indulge too much

@MollyButton I haven’t really been tested for anything for a while but that’s good advice

My GP is good so I might just go and see her and talk about it all
