I have moved to this property 4 monts ago. Its a 2 bed semi house, double windows and the house is pretty warm .
2 adults with a baby.
I am with EON and we have the smart meter installed however I do not keep it on because I feel not comfortable when looking at it and thinking that gosh, I cant put the heating on because of the numbers going up !
I did actually swutched it on tonight only to find out that we have used 180£ for December !
160£ for January and today for example, 4£ when we werent even in for the whole day and the heating has been off all day.
when we are in the house we usually put the heating on in the morning then once again at night, I keep my room temp on 20 deegrees.
I wonder if thats the right amount to pay ? or shoudl we switch to something else ?
My father in law lifes in a 4 bed house with shit windows and he sticks to 120£month and its very warm there anytime I go in .
I just find it very expensive really but maybe thats normal ?

Key question is not who you're with, it's what tariff you're on. If you're on a standard tariff then yes, you're overpaying and should switch.

That does sound quite high? Have you tried shopping about for a better deal? I would expect in cold winter combined gas and electricity of about £120 max then more £70 for mild winter then £35 in summer.

I switched to Bulb and found their rates much cheaper and they pay exit fees and you can cancel anytime.

Maybe have a shop around on deals?

Here's my Bulb refer a friend link if you wanted an anonymous quote in 2 minutes of your bills plus you get £50 credit (as do I Wink).

But try some others too. I'd definitely think about switching

I'm interested, but I really want to know the actual meter readings and dates. Not the amounts of money you have paid.

Gas in Cubic Metres (or kWh will do, there are about 11.2kWh in a cu.m)

Electricity in kWh

And the start and end dates that it was used in.

Are you in Aberdeen or in Penzance?

ta.

That’s a lot. I pay £95 a month in a 3 bed semi and use a tumble dryer, have the heating on loads etc. You should go on uswitch (via topcashback for £25 extra) and get a better deal.

We only pay about £60 a month for gas and electricity combined for a 4 bed house so that seems like a lot. We're with Octopus. We've also got a referral code so both get £50. It's share.octopus.energy/shy-goose-191 if you're interested.

That is a lot!
For a big 2 bed flat for me, partner and DS 7 months we pay £120 for gas and electricity a month with SSE.

bobbiester · 07/02/2020 00:14

If you're paying £160 to £180 per month in Dec/Jan things could easily average out to ,£120 per month over the year.

Taken in isolation Dec/Jan bills will always look shocking compared to a monthly direct debit plan payment.

DesLynamsMoustache · 07/02/2020 00:22

Winter bills are always much higher. Someone might pay £120 a month over the course of a year, but if you look month to month, it could be more like £180 in December and £70 in July. But if you're paying month to month for usage then you'll be paying a lot more in the winter months.

Moved into new (to us) 3 bed house in November. Stone built, no central heating, 3 coal fires, emersion heater, 4 electric wall heaters. Not on mains gas. Electricity bill £180 for TEN days!!!!!
Have changed supplier but tarrif only slightly cheaper.
