To ask if you if this could be dyslexia? [Edited by MNHQ at OP's request]

I'm really struggling recently with reading and writing. When I write/type/read, it all seems to jumble up and merge into one and none of it makes any sense! It's so weird and frustrating

And I've noticed it more recently because I'm currently studying for an exam and I'm finding it so hard because of this issue.

Anyone else experienced this?

Yes i am dyslexic, what i found helpful when studying at uni was coloured overlays , they come in different colours and i found green the most helpful it was crazy how different the letters looked with the overlay on

sidneyp · 05/02/2020 21:37

Thanks @chicken2015. Where can I get those from? And if you don't mind me asking, have you been dyslexic since childhood?

Thread title is supposed to say "this", not "they"!

An “Irlens” practitioner can help you with the overlays or glasses

Is it the GP I need to visit with my concerns? I do feel like it's affecting me at work, I'm forever typing numbers wrong etc

DS is dyslexic. He had what you described but school kept brushing off his bad SPAG as laziness for years (He was otherwise good in school)... We got a diagnosis in year 12 and now at uni he gets a bit of extra time (stem subject). Getting a diagnosis is so important as you then get extra support and extra time to read the questions. Good luck OP!

I guess ive always been just wasnt diagnosed untill uni, at school i was told i was boardline and not as bas as the others so couldnt help me. Ill try and find website i used

Callimanco · 05/02/2020 22:42

Tbh, no, not if this is a new experience when you have not previously had difficulties with reading and writing. Dyslexia doesn't suddenly "come on" someone.

If this is new, I would start with an optician appointment and then the GP, as soon as you can.

Agree with Call could just be slight problems

Bramblesinforrin · 05/02/2020 22:46

Hi there, visual difficulties is the new term assessors call Irlens-ornvisual stress. It is a separate condition from dyslexia, can occur with it or on its own. You may do best in seeing a specialist optician - ideally someone who is a behavioural optometrist.

If only recent, I second GP. However, there should also be a student support advisor if you are studying for an exam at a centre, who should be able to point you in the direction of a dyslexia screener (which gives a likelihood of dyslexia), or full assessment.

DS had a coloured screening check at school using a set from Crossbow (who I use to buy DS's exercise books from).
We then went to a local independent optician who do coloured screenings. It is a private service so he was only covered with an NHS contribution towards frames and not towards lenses.

I still remember the look on his teacher's face when she described how she put a particular colour down and he read fluidly for the first time ever. Within days he was up two reading levels and functioning in normal range.

DM is of an age group before dyslexia was widely recognised and had quite a fragmented education. She's only realised in recent years that writing floats around the page. Nothing actually new to her, just the realisation that to most people the writing stays in lines and her normal isn't normal.
