To be very cross at the surgery regarding 8 week immunisations.

I went this morning to have my 8 week postnatal check up and for my DS to have his first set of immunisations. After waiting 2 hours after my initial appointment time which with a small baby was pretty frustrating I had my appointment and all was fine. I was then led through to the nurses room to sort out the immunisations to be told they could not do them as he is not 8 weeks until tomorrow! At no point did anyone inform me of this problem in the time I was waiting and nor did they contact me to change the date before I arrived despite the letter for the appointments arriving 2 weeks ago.

This is all very annoying but the thing that's really pissed me off is that instead of admitting a mistake they told me I should have double checked as he wasnt going to be 8 weeks and it was my fault for not querying the appointment date. They then informed me it had wasted an appointment and to make sure in future baby was old enough!

Am I unreasonable to be thoroughly pissed off at their attitude? Also would it have actually mattered if he'd of had the jabs today or can he really only have them once he is 8 weeks old?

Of course they wouldn't administer it. 8wks+ has been deemed safe, 7wks 6d hasn't. An 8 weeker is tiny.

I feel your frustration about not being informed, but a receptionist may have thought (as you did) that this would be ok. It's likely the practice nurse only realised when reviewing your baby's notes a few mins before the apt. I couldn't get worked up tbh.

So, if a child born at 11.45 pm 8weeks ago tomorrow were to have their jabs at 9am, they would be fine to have them, but your child wasn't!

I had a palaver the whole way through her immunisations tbh, I understand that they have to be certain time apart but why couldn’t they figure that out before issuing the appointments!! DD didn’t actually have her first jabs until she was 11 weeks due to the surgery being “too busy” but that’s a story for another day Angry

Thebig correct. For reasons explained.

Waitrose, you wouldn't get worked up if your surgery sent you an incorrect appointment, had you wait for two hours only to be told off for attending too soon? When THEY sent YOU the appointment? You must be incredibly laid back if you wouldn't be annoyed by that!

The big, it has been explained by previous posters. Nurses usually aren't prescribers so can only administer medications without a doctors prescription under something called a patient group directive. This is where the trust have written a PGD for a particular medication and have dictated the group of people a registered nurse can administer this do - in this case it is specified a minimum age of 8 weeks. The nurse can be struck off if she doesn't adhere to the guidelines in the PGD. This was literally out of her hands, she couldn't give the medication.
