AIBU to not understand the current obsession with bathrooms?

It seems like a lot of properties are shoehorning in an en suite or an extra toilet or shower room wherever they can.

I just saw a miniscule 2 bed flat with a family bathroom and a chunk taken out of the main bedroom for a shower en suite Confused surely the space could have been better used for storage, or literally anything else? What need is there for 2 bathrooms in a 2 bedroom flat?

I've seen this a lot in new builds as well, and it's just bizarre!

We have 2 bathrooms, it's the only place I've ever lived in that's had more than one and it's great, we don't mind cleaning them. I have Crohn's and dreamed of having a second loo for a long time Grin, we're hoping to do a downstairs one too when we get the money.

However when I was at uni, it was a 5 bed flat with one bathroom (and I mean a bath, not a shower) and we often had friends or boyfriends staying, so it could be as many as 10 people getting ready in the bathroom each morning! We managed! Grin

We lived in a 2 bed house once that had a good sized main bathroom- the bath had a shower over it- but it also had a shower cubicle and sink in the main bedroom. It was through an archway so not actually in the room- but didn't have a door, or a toilet, so wasn't a proper en-suite. The space could've been used as a walk in wardrobe or something. Very odd.

Love my en-suite , love the bathroom that everyone else uses and love the downstairs toilet that guests use .
I’d always look for house with an en-suite in the future and as for “steam from the shower” that’s what an extractor fan is for ,like any bathroom ..

I get what you mean op, I think particularly in new build houses they seem to try and squeeze in as many bathrooms as possible! We live in a very densely built up area where the houses are 90% 2 or 3 bedroomed terraces. We have just the one bathroom and it's really never been an issue. But a few years back, developers built six new semis on a patch of former wasteland nearby. The footprint of the six houses was equal to about four of the surrounding terraces, so they must have been pokey to start with. Yet they have a full bathroom, ensuite AND downstairs cloakroom! The bedrooms must be absolutely tiny and they only have one downstairs reception room. It really is a case of squishing them in, at the cost of space that could be better used elsewhere!

Surely there can't be sufficient water pressure to run more than 2 showers at once anyway.

This is the floor plan of my house, no pokey bedrooms and enough water pressure for all the showers to work at the same time.

@Bluerussian it’s a cast iron bath on legs and not right against the walls, fitting a shower isn’t actually that easy- and I certainly have other uses for our limited funds! It would probably also require a pump in the system to work well enough, not a small job.

PhilCornwall1 · 08/02/2020 11:16

If MN is anything to go by, one bathroom is the "family bathroom" and the other one is an outhouse if you have the audacity to need a shite.

And also if MN is anything to go by, you need to spend between 10k and 13k to get a bathroom refitted (was on a thread this week). Never spent that on a bathroom refit in my life, not even a kitchen either!

And I'll never understand why it's called a "family bathroom", surely it's just the bathroom?Hmm

En-suites are a no way in my book. I don't want a bog in my bedroom thank you very much!!

Bluerussian · 08/02/2020 11:20

Fair enough upsidedown, you can't do everything. Before most people had showers we used to use a big jug to rinse off and wash hair. Those were the days.

I would actually like a big cast iron bath but would want a shower too or one of those telephone-looking hoses above the taps.

PhilCornwall, I also think 'family bathroom' is an odd title but I suppose estate agents have to call the main bathroom something. I feel same about 'cloakrooms' for downstairs lavatory - who hangs coats in there?

Brazi103 · 08/02/2020 11:30

Can't stand the idea of en-suites in general. I really don't want smells from lavatories and steam from showers wafting into the bedroom.

Why would that happen if you have windowsConfused and you should if you have an ensuite.

We have a guest powder room bathroom on our main floor and upstairs we have an ensuite in each room. The house was built this way so it was one of the factors that made us buy it.

I hate using the main bathroom with all their personal items on display when visiting others. It doesn't bother some people but it's just a preference for me. I lived in a small house before where the main bathroom was the only one for guests and hated it.

I hate using the main bathroom with all their personal items on display when visiting others.

That's one thing not in our bathroom, nothing is on display as it's not in there. The only thing remotely personal as such in there is shampoo and shower gel.

Alsohuman · 08/02/2020 11:36

That made me laugh, you can see my toiletries in Boots any time, they’re not remotely personal.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 08/02/2020 11:53

I have three bathrooms All used by different family members.
My bathroom is upstairs with a separate loo so no need for someone to have to wait if someone else is using the shower. This bathroom is used by myself and one adult son and we both have bedrooms on this floor. There is also a great room and any guest would also use this bathroom.
Down stairs I have a disabled bathroom used by my mum. I will also use the loo in there to save going upstairs.
The third bathroom is in my attached annex where another adult son and his girlfriend live. They are have exclusive use of the annex and bathroom and are responsible for the cleaning.

Although I have more than one bathroom I don’t like en-suites and would never have one but it is handy to have an additional toilet downstairs.
