This modern craze for using ‘of’ instead of ‘have’ drives me nuts - so we have ‘I should of’, ‘I would of’ - it’s ‘should HAVE!’ It’s not hard.

The other thing that has me throwing things at the TV is bloody Alexander Armstrong. For somebody who was privately educated and went to Cambridge university, his mastery of basic English is dreadful. I sometimes catch the end of his pointless quiz show - yes, it is absolutely pointless- and he always signs of by saying ‘It’s goodbye from Richard’(and Richard dutifully says goodbye ) and follows that with ‘And it’s goodbye from me. Goodbye.’

He doesn’t have to say goodbye twice! Just ‘it’s goodbye from me’ will suffice.

I know, I have too much time on my hands.........

I don't know if the of/have thing is a craze; maybe dialect, or a misunderstanding, or plain lazy.
I think the goodbye thing is a nod to the Two Ronnies; they signed off with 'it's goodnight from me and goodnight from him'.

Stephminx · 04/02/2020 21:12

I love Alexander Armstrong !

Agree about would of / have though.

siring1 · 04/02/2020 21:17

You're only supposed to use three ellipsis at the end of a sentence.

I hate people adding more.

Peoplearemiserable · 04/02/2020 21:18

I’m from Derbyshire and it’s definitely part of the accent to say “should of” instead of “should have”. I do speak like that but I would always write it down as “should’ve” or “should have”.

Letseatgrandma · 04/02/2020 21:21

He’s just being funny though Confused.

And this should be posted in pedants’ corner!

missmouse101 · 04/02/2020 21:24

Yanbu! Totally agree. But yabvu to write 'signs of'. Confused

Whatsername177 · 04/02/2020 21:27

Would of/have drives me potty too. As does 'less' when you mean 'fewer'. Using 'I' instead of 'me'. Urgh. The list goes on. I am so forking boring!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 04/02/2020 21:27

I can’t watch anything with Alexander Armstrong or Richard Osman in.f. Xander, they call him. Annoying.

Whatsername177 · 04/02/2020 21:29

Also, I hate it when people say 'are' when they mean 'our'. Sod your accent, they are two completely different words, use them correctly! Ok, I'm off back to my corner.

JKScot4 · 04/02/2020 21:30

Brought for bought 😡
I’ve borrowed her my car, no you’ve loaned her your car or allowed her to borrow!!!!

user32564567 · 04/02/2020 21:32

'signs off'

user32564567 · 04/02/2020 21:33

'fucking'

BikeRunSki · 04/02/2020 21:33

The “goodbye” thing isa catchphrase!

Could “of” is an informal corruption of “could’ve”, and has been around for such a long time that many people don’t realise this when they write it down.

NotALurker2 · 04/02/2020 21:34

How about Woulda Coulda Shoulda? Love that phrase.

@siring1

"You're only supposed to use three ellipsis at the end of a sentence.
I hate people adding more."

Three periods is for a break within a sentence, four for the end of a sentence. (Only saying since we're being pedantic....)

user32564567 · 04/02/2020 21:35

I hate when people write prissy stuff like 'forking instead of fucking'

Ugzbugz · 04/02/2020 21:39

Never heard of ellipsis at the age of 40 Confused

Lincolnfield · 04/02/2020 21:40

@missmouse101- oops! Typo, not lack of spelling ability honestly 😂😂

I’ve had a duvet day - rotten chest infection - so boring musing going on. Don’t get me started on the American pronunciation of ‘aluminum’ (spelt as pronounced) and nucular! 😂😂

OP posts:
Whatsername177 · 04/02/2020 21:42

I'm not being prissy, I'm quoting 'The Good Place' Grin

VodselForDinner · 04/02/2020 21:44

Armstrong constantly gets less/fewer wrong as well.

“Have less than 40 people said...?”

I had to stop watching Pointless because of it.

katy1213 · 04/02/2020 21:48

At least it's not, 'Goodbye from Richard and I.'

Much as I hate 'would of' (and off of), the Mumsnet 'Me and him ...' and 'Me and her ...' drives me insane.

TulipCat · 04/02/2020 21:50

Jeremy Paxman also does the double goodbye thing on University Challenge. They probably have to sign off the way the producers tell them, to be fair.

MikeUniformMike · 04/02/2020 21:54

Aluminum is correct in the USA and Canada.

I don't understand how anyone can think that Of is a verb. There is no excuse for it.

How can anyone say 'I of done it' without thinking about what they are saying?

There are many posters on here who post things like "I am bias". That might be predictive text.

ShirleyPhallus · 04/02/2020 21:56

It would be much worse if he was saying “goodbye from Richard and I”. Or “goodbye from Richard and myself”

EntropyRising · 04/02/2020 21:57

Surely it can't be considered pedantic to object to 'should of'.

Divebar · 04/02/2020 21:59

The inability to spell lose ( not loose) but would of / have is up there for me too.
