Washing vegetables

How thoroughly you wash your vegetables before cooking/eating them?

I give them all a quick rinse under the tap so they all get wet, but I wouldn't say that I worry too much. For instance, mushrooms probably still have bits of dirt on them

AIBU to not pay too much attention to washing them?

I don’t Shock

TabbyMumz · 04/02/2020 19:45

Dont wash any veg. Mushrooms just pick off any soil, carrots get peeled. Potatoes look pretty clean already so only peel if I'm doing mash. Dont wash anything? What are you washing?

OpportunityKnocks · 04/02/2020 19:48

Broccoli, cabbage, green beans, mange touts, cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumber...

Yes, I know some of those are fruit

TabbyMumz · 04/02/2020 19:58

I would not wash any of those.

FadedRed · 04/02/2020 19:59

Yes, I wash fruit and veg.

coconuttelegraph · 04/02/2020 20:00

This really falls into the category of do what ever you like with your own vegetables that you are going to eat yourself Confused

DartmoorChef · 04/02/2020 20:00

I wash salad leaves as there is a risk of listeria . That's about it.

Shadowcats · 04/02/2020 20:01

Nope, no washing. Will rinse if eating raw though.

PityParty4one · 04/02/2020 20:01

Running them under the tap does nothing. Unless you are scrubbing them with hot water and some anti bac it's just a waste of time as you cook veg to a heat that kills bacteria anyway.

I do wash salad and fruit I dont peel though just, I do it to get any bits off.

Floralnomad · 04/02/2020 20:03

Broccoli and cauliflower definitely needs soaking as they are often infested . Most other things I peel .

DangerMouse17 · 04/02/2020 20:04

Yes I wash all fruit and veg unless I'm peeling them. Why wouldn't you? It's not about cooking the bacteria will rid, they've usually been in a shop sitting around...shop/storeroom dust, people coughing on them etc. It takes 2 secs to give things a quick wash.

ShyTown · 04/02/2020 20:07

Cursory rinse if cooking. Probably not necessary though because the heat will, I imagine, kill any germs. Anything to be eaten raw e.g. fruit or cucumber gets a proper wash though.

ShinyMe · 04/02/2020 20:08

I always wash veg and most fruit. Nothing to do with dirt or bugs, I'm fine with those, but more about the pesticides or chemicals they may have.

LouisaJenny · 04/02/2020 20:09

I don’t wash any vegetables.

OpportunityKnocks · 04/02/2020 20:19

I wonder about pesticides mainly.

The only veg I wash are ones I have dug up from the allotment. The only shop bought veg I wash is lettuce which I do run under cold water.

BigFatLiar · 04/02/2020 20:30

Take the dirt off. Don't bother peeling except for turnip/swede type veg.

DappledThings · 04/02/2020 20:33

Don't do any washing either. DH does 95% of the cooking in our house and doesn't either. He did when I was pregnant and was delighted to be a to stop again afterwards

oohyoudevilyou · 04/02/2020 20:38

I wash everything unless I've peeled it. I don't seriously think I'd catch anything, but I'm just a bit bothered by the thought of something I eat being handled by lots of unwashed hands.

aprilstory · 04/02/2020 20:41
Shock Not only do I wash most fruit and veg, but I soak some of them in water for 5-10 mins (e.g. broccoli, cauliflower, grapes, strawberries) to get rid of pesticides. Organic fruit and veg are just rinsed.

I try to soak rice overnight as well as that’s the best way of removing arsenic apparently. My family eat a lot of rice, so I’m being super cautious.

PhantomErik · 04/02/2020 20:45

I wash or peel all fruit & veg!

Windymilly · 04/02/2020 20:48

Yes I wash it in case of chemical residue from pesticides. Sadly the land, sea and air are all polluted.

Cotswoldmama · 04/02/2020 20:49

I don't, even if I'm eating them raw.

CherryMaple · 04/02/2020 20:51

Does rinsing fruit and veg under the tap actually remove pesticides? I wash everything that isn’t being peeled, and would love to think I’m removing chemicals along with any visible dirt and dust...

JRUIN · 04/02/2020 20:52

I don't wash anything!
