...to think people do not take home-based jobs seriously?

After fixed-term contract to fixed-term contract I FINALLY got a permanent academic contract. That stuff is like gold dust.

Job is 3 to 3.5h away from where we live at the moment (good train connection) but involves a significant amount of online teaching, which is why they offered me to work from home two days a week, which is fantastic. I mean, overall it is not ideal but the pros outweigh the cons quite a bit.

My families reaction went from genuine excitement to 'oh, just one of those home office things then, nothing proper'. From what I have heard, I am not the only one who is witnessed people saying something like this. Why is that?!

YABU = People take (most?) home office jobs seriously
YANBU = People do not take home office jobs seriously

I currently do an NHS job that allows me to work from home here and there and it is utterly fantastic. I get so much done and no interruptions. I do tend to end up working even when I get back from the office but I do take my time owing and it all evens out. If anyone suggested I was skiving off when I was wfh I’d show them the copious amount of email I invariably end up sending!

I've worked from home for 27 as a freelancer. It's a full time, full on (too full on sometimes, when working regular until 2am or even through the night when deadlines are due).

During the first 10 years I had this all the time -

"Oh you can meet up/I can come round because you're at home"

"Can you look after my dcs because you're at home"

Long phone calls from DM or MIL who fancied a chat 'because I'm at home"

I regular get asked if I'm 'working' or 'busy' or the absolute worst ....."Are still doing a bit of work?"

I work irregular hours but a LOT of hours. I pay my income tax like everyone else.

I snapped at my MIL once when she mentioned my 'little job'. I fired back at her that I earned the same wage as her son on average PLUS doing all the other stuff like dcs, house and cooking etc (this was in response to her complaining my spice rack was a bit dusty!)

Now I don't talk about my work. I only moan at tiredness and stress with colleagues in the same business who understand without explanation.
