To be crapping myself about going under ga?

I’ve been under twice before so don’t know why I’m so anxious this time. Saying that the last time I was under general was about 10 years ago.

I’ve had ivf and have my egg retrieval this week, it’ll be done under general anaesthetic which I’m happy about because I didn’t really want to be awake for it but I’m so scared at the thought of the “blackness” while your under, from what I remember I was put under then just woke up nothing inbetween it’s so freaky lol. So aibu to be so petrified?

I’ve coped a lot better than I thought I would through the ivf so am I just working myself up for nothing?

Last time I have a GA I was super anxious, I actually cried in the operating theatre. The “blackness” isn’t bothersome though, if anything I found it all quite refreshing.

I posted about this the other week.

Tell them beforehand. I had an amazing team around me and it helped. They actually gave me rohypnol I got in such a state.

YANBU to feel anxious but I love GAs. Honestly felt like had a week long holiday after one of them. I was having it for a crap reason but I still woke up feeling calm, relaxed and refreshed. I love sleep and it’s a very deep sleep.

They’ll look after you really well, the anaesthetist is your best friend!

Best of luck.

Yanbu. The wait is the worse part ime. You'll be fine once its over Flowers

Littlebb2020 · 04/02/2020 16:52

@AnneLovesGilbert I love your reply! Never thought of it as a week long holiday 😂 I do feel nice after them I remember feeling relaxed and happy after one I had years ago.

I will be sure to tell them I’m very anxious before too x

I just had one on Saturday, they were lovely. They knew I was anxious so there was no messing about - I told them like them to just get on with it.

HollysTeflonSeptum · 04/02/2020 16:57

Tell them you're feeling anxious, they can give you something to relax you before you go under.

Charis1503 · 04/02/2020 16:58

I told them i was nervous and they were really friendly and kind.

I rember the gas on my face and then waking up a 'few minutes' later with them calling my name.

Best bit of advice i was given ' try will yourself to sleep' imagine you need a good kip before an early night and try fall asleep willingly. I fell asleep okay and dont recall any blackness.

Good luck. x

As an insomniac I love GAs. 3.. 2... 1 and I'm out. Wake up in a completely different place with the offer of a cuppa! Ok I might be missing a leg or two but the bliss of going straight to sleep is almost worth it!

Urkiddingright · 04/02/2020 17:03

I understand OP. I had a couple of missed miscarriages in 2017 and I’d never been under GA before, the thought absolutely terrified me so I mistakenly opted for medical management. Well, the pills failed and I haemorrhaged, went into shock and nearly died. Had to have emergency surgery to save my life so had no choice but to have GA and it was fine. Just opted for the surgical management second time and it was again fine. Only shit thing is the sore throat the next day. It is a daunting prospect though but always worth remembering you will be in the safest environment surrounded by experts.

Maybe you are more anxious because there is so much more riding on the results of the procedure this time - not like taking out an appendix or something like that. I don't think you are being unreasonable but like @AnneLovesGilbert said, for me, it felt like a holiday - one minute I was counting backwards, the next I was in recovery. I had no idea how long I was out for - it could have been 5 minutes or 5 days but I have never felt as peaceful and rested as i did that day!

ineedanotherholiday · 04/02/2020 17:19

I've only had it once and I was so anxious beforehand. Was worried I wouldn't wake up.

It was absolutely fine, went under really quickly, woke up was a bit out of it to begin with but then absolutely fine, no grogginess. Walked out of hospital etc that was for a d&c.

So not yanbu but will be absolutely fine Thanks

peanutbuttermarmite · 04/02/2020 17:23

I’d put money on the associated hopes and concerns exacerbating it too. My nana in her late 80s came through 2 ops just fine. Fingers crossed for the retrieval.

I LOVE general anaesthetics. It’s so relaxing. It’s an alien environment and you’re out of control, technically, but you will have one of the most qualified doctors (anaesthetist) sitting by you the entire time you’re having a sleep, monitoring you and caring for you. You’ll be the centre of their world for the short time you’re under. You will wake up snug in bed, in recovery, surrounded by people all looking after you. I was covered in pillows when I woke up, it was so comfortable.
Please don’t worry, nothing will go wrong, do tell them you’re anxious (they’re so used to it) and good luck with your egg retrieval.
