Please reassure me leg pain is just part of pregnancy

I’m currently 22 weeks pregnant and everything has been going fine. Although have been feeling really uncomfortable the last couple of days.

Today I was at work and everything was normal. Left the office at the end of the day and walked about 10mins to my car. Got in the car and noticed that my left foot was really cold. Didn’t think too much, just put the heating on.

All evening I haven’t been able to warm the foot up, it felt cold to touch. Went to bed and now woken up as my whole leg is aching, the foot does feel warm now. It’s mild pain in the grand scheme of things but enough to keep me awake.

Google tells me this is all normal but I never had anything like this with my first. So please reassure me that this is likely to be nothing other than awkward positioning of the baby.

OP I had NO OTHER SYMPTOMS apart from an aching leg that woke me up. No warmth, no swelling, no red patches. I'd had the ache for two days and it had travelled from my calf to my hip in that time. The same distance again to the lungs and it would have been game over.

Once they found it they wouldn't let me leave the clinic until the haematologist has come to assess my treatment and immediately given me thinners. It was that urgent

When you have DVT, a bit of hard blood is blocking your venous return, the symptoms of that can range between heat, coldness and numbness. One of the things that I would do to determine whether you need bloods (I'd always give bloods to a pregnant woman with any type of ?DVT) is measure your calves. If I measured or saw a marked difference in size, I'd be even more concerned about DVT.

Get your toddler and go to A+E. DVT is major killer of pregnant woman and you will collapse on the floor with blood coming out of your nose and mouth and extreme scary chest pain. If you're in the house with your toddler, 20ish weeks pregnant and possible DVT and you sit and do nothing, that is irresponsible. It's your life and your fetus but it is awfully unfair on that toddler.

Sorry to be harsh but I've lost 2 patients to DVT while pregnant. One was 17.

Ok, I’m listening and I’m off to a&e. I’ll update later.

Retired doc here. Get to A and E now, or risk dying of a pulmonary embolism. Your call.

Babdoc · 04/02/2020 08:17

Cross posted! Thank goodness you’re doing the right thing, OP.

AudacityOfHope · 04/02/2020 08:21

Glad you're going to get it checked out. Pregnancy is such a magical time isn't it? 😬

Good luck! Thanks

Taddda · 04/02/2020 10:00

I'd have to agree considering you think your left leg is bigger than your right? And also now that the pain isnt there that it may have travelled?? Doesn't sound like SPD with those symptoms, does sound like possible DVT- I'd be going to A&E, your certainly not wasting anyones time OP - go with LO and see if someone can meet you there to help- best wishes Flowers

i suddenly developed, 2 days before birth, numb fingers, palms and arms. nobody gave a monkeys. totally normal apparently. baby is 4 weeks old still 2 numb finger tips. swelling apparently, carpal tunnel. could be something like that. you can always ask but if google tells you normal midwife will probably do the same.

Napssavelives · 04/02/2020 12:54

Hope you are ok op

ChocolateEmergency · 04/02/2020 20:15

Sorry for late update, just got toddler to bed.

Went to hospital and they’ve ruled out DVT. They took bloods, urine sample and did an ecg as my heart rate was up and the only thing wrong is that I’m anaemic.

I asked what could be wrong with my leg and the response I got was, we’re just here to rule out a threat to life. Said it’s probably just pregnancy related but go to see gp if I’m still worried.

Thanks for everyone’s advice, at least I’m reassured it’s nothing serious.

Glad your okay OP- watch the anemia, I had to have ferrous infusions towards the end of my last pregnancy as I wasn't able to absorb iron (iron deficient anemia)-
Glad they ruled out the DVT, do also get checked for SPD, a good physio will be able to check your alignment and give you some exercises if it helps-
Feet up for a few days if you can? You must have had a busy day Flowers

JustOneMoreStep · 04/02/2020 21:13

Glad you got checked out OP and the nasties.

Just in case anyone else is reading this concerned about unexplained leg pain and getting checked out, I had a small area that was painful when the shower ran on it and when I looked closely it looked like a faint bruise about the size of a £2 coin but I couldn't remember bumping it and it was on the inside of my calf. Googled it and DVT was the only thing that came up but I didnt think that was likely so went to bed. Didnt think anymore of it until my shower when the same thing happened and noticed that it was VERY slightly warmer than the other leg but no swelling or other symptoms. Happened to be seeing the gp for an unrelated issue and he happened to ask if 'everything else was ok' and I mentioned it as being odd as only hurt in the shower.....he had me down to a&e within the hour and I was in majors part of a&e.....I felt a right fool until my blood tests came back which was 'off the chart' and showed me the size of the clot on the scan (hip to below knee) and that the small bruise I could see was a bit that had broken off and travelled downwards. If that piece had travelled upwards I would be dead. I couldn't believe it given how few symptoms I had and how mild they were. I will also be on blood thinners for life despite having mo risk factors (when not pregnant)

ChocolateEmergency · 04/02/2020 21:37

@Taddda Will do, I was anaemic with my first and based on my really weird cravings, I half expected that it was back anyway. Just didn’t expect increased heart rate to be linked.

I’ve been thinking about going to see an osteopath anyway, as I’ve had the odd bit of back pain and really want to avoid that getting worse. Will definitely be making that call tomorrow now.

Unfortunately I’m at work the next two days so no rest but I’ve just had a nice hot bath with some radox muscle relaxing stuff which will hopefully help!

Glad you got sorted. Try and rest if you can 💐

LangittleClegabbage · 04/02/2020 22:21

So glad you are okay OP.

Bluerussian · 06/02/2020 21:41

Thank you for the update, op, glad to hear you are basically alright.

ChocolateEmergency · 07/02/2020 07:16

@Bluerussian thanks! Saw the Osteopath last night and apparently I had a twisted muscle in my lower back. He has cracked me back into place and all seems to be ok now. Thank you everyone for your concern.

Great news, ChocolateEmergency.

Taddda · 07/02/2020 19:40

Great stuff OP! Glad your feeling better

memberofseven · 07/02/2020 19:50

I too think you should be checked for dvt.

memberofseven · 07/02/2020 19:54

Oh god sorry. I'm pregnant as well and appear unable to rtft. Glad you've got it sorted.
