To feel bloody fed up with pregnancy rhinitis

Just a moan really. I'm tired and grumpy through lack of sleep because I can't breathe at night (yes I know sleep situation is not going to improve when baby arrives). Constantly bunged up or sniffly nose, and sneezing. I know it's just like having a cold except nothing helps and paracetamol won't do anything because it's an allergic reaction. The reason I'm so down is because unlike a cold, I've read that this could last throughout pregnancy until after the baby is born, and it's due in July.

I've tried a humidifier (ultrasonic) with eucalyptus oil by my bed but it hasn't helped so far Sad

Has anyone found anything to help? 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

You could try an antihistamine. Loratidine is considered ok in pregnancy as is cetirizine

Tombliwho · 03/02/2020 19:19

Argh I feel yah. I got it in pregnancy with DC2 and nothing helped at all. It reared its ugly head after the sickness stopped this time round and it's just miserable. I get nosebleeds with it too which just enrage me further.
I feel so glam.

SnottyMummy · 03/02/2020 19:24

Really @dementedpixie I had read that these were a no go? Of course I will ask my GP anyway.

Uh @Tombliwho the nosebleeds as well- that sucks! I haven't experienced those so I'm thankful for that at least. I'm just so fed up with the no sleep thing. Was trying to get good rest to prepare for the 3rd trimester and inevitable no sleep for years. SadSad

I had horrible pregnancy rhinitis, could just about cope in the day but night time was a nightmare, used to go to bed with vicks plastered under my nose-only thing that worked!
Unfortunately I now suffer with chronic rhinitis and get every cold going ☹️
You have my sympathy, it's awful!

Littlemissdaredevil · 03/02/2020 20:14

I’m 26 weeks and my snottiness is just being to easy (fingers crossed)

EstebanTheMagnificent · 03/02/2020 20:20

I used a decongestant nasal spray. They aren’t strictly approved for use in pregnancy but I made a judgement that I was happy with on the risk.

MummyFriend · 03/02/2020 20:28

I have this too and it drives me crazy. I tried 5ml of saline solution in a (cheap) nebuliser earlier today for the first time and it actually gave me about 5 hours of relief. Going to try again before I go to bed and see if it helps me sleep. I'll let you know if it helps!

DoYouRememberTheInnMiranda · 03/02/2020 20:30

I used to inhale boiling water from a bowl with a towel round my head for a short amount of relief to let me get to sleep in the first place at least.

Roozy123 · 03/02/2020 20:30

I'm 34 weeks pregnant and have nothing to suggest but feel your pain!!!!!
I'm forever blowing my nose and sneezing all day and night.
Also makes me feel sick so is adding to the pregnancy sickness Flowers

DoYouRememberTheInnMiranda · 03/02/2020 20:30

The steam from boiling water I mean!

seven201 · 03/02/2020 20:35

I took an anthisthamine every day during my pregnancy.

Figuringitout · 03/02/2020 20:51

I used a Vicks inhaler (literally shoved it up my nose!) and the plaster things you stick on your nose to stop snoring. Didn’t totally cure it, but meant I could sleep. It totally disappeared when I gave birth. On the first night with my newborn, I had the best night’s sleep I’d had in ages!

SnottyMummy · 03/02/2020 21:35

Really @Figuringitout! That's amazing and not what you expect the first night! :-)

If it’s an allergy then piriton syrup is ok to take and can make you sleepy if you have it before bed - win win!

Supertrooper98 · 03/02/2020 21:59

Oh I was similar. It was awful. I had that which then became sleep apnoea added in. So if I ever did manage to fall asleep with the stuffy nose I would snort myself awake 2 mins later. I'd actually forgotten about it until now. I had to "sleep" sitting straight up with those snore strips on my nose. Nothing helped. I was so miserable.

Supertrooper98 · 03/02/2020 22:00

The snore strips probably are a good idea though. They kind of pull your nostrils open a bit

Crazyoldmaurice · 04/02/2020 00:13

Currently 32 weeks pregnant with no3 and have always suffered with this it's awful! I also use a decongestant spray as "sort of okayed" by my gp. I was also snorting myself awake 2 mins after falling asleep. I already have 2 children under 5 so no sleep is not an option for me; plus the lack of oxygen etc isnt good for me or growing baby so it's a weigh up of risks. Decongestant sprays after extended use can cause rebound congestion though so I currently only use it in one nostril and keep one bunged up so that when I stop the spray once baby here I'll have one nostril that isnt congested whilst I wait for the rebound congestion to subside on the other one.

LimitIsUp · 04/02/2020 00:33

I did exactly the same as Esteban and used a decongestant nasal spray. Not recommended in pregnancy is not the same as presenting a risk in pregnancy and I did a fair bit of research before I took the plunge
