What’s your budget for your summer holiday

NxnAllInclusive · 03/02/2020 18:57

I’m going on a group holiday with various family members and partners this summer.

I wrongly said I’d go with the flow therefore half the people have already booked and they’re relying on me to cover my share (had to work late and missed the meet up).

If you all agreed on a budget what would you think that budget was for?

Yes: flights and all-inclusive.

No: everything (except a little bit of spending money for nick nacks etc).

Basically the top end of the budget is going to cover flights + accommodation (all inclusive) but that’s the whole budget there - not even covering getting to the airport let alone leaving the hotel for the various things we could get up to.

I have to go or someone else will have to foot a whole room.

I regularly go on holiday with different groups of people. I often organise the trips.

If I ask for people's top budget then that is for flight and hotel. If we were going AI then that would be stated and the budget would include that. I would never in a million years think that someone's budget included their spending money for food/drinks/trips out etc.

That's a really odd way of budgeting for your holiday. I would have also assumed your budget meant your flights, transfers and accommodation only. However I would definitely have had a discussion about what type of accommodation everyone was thinking of as this would have an impact on how much spending money I'd then want to save. (E.g. less if all inclusive as we'd probably eat more meals at the hotel.)

kirinm · 03/02/2020 20:31

Sorry OP. I would also assume it was your budget for flight and accommodation. I hope you're able to sort it out okay. If you're all inclusive, hiring surfboards / water sports etc may be included in the cost.

doadeer · 03/02/2020 20:38

I would think budget is flights and accommodation - what you spend on extra meals and drinks outside the hotel as well as activities is individual choice and wouldn't be in my main budget if it's all inclusive

NxnAllInclusive · 03/02/2020 20:59

Thanks for all your replies. I can’t stop being upset at myself.

They’ve booked a really really expensive area/country as well - it’s literally just a tourist area therefore nothing is free. I’ve had to mute the chat as they’re posting loads of things to do and they’re all around the £100 mark and they’re not even full day activities.

The all inclusive does have numerous pools/restaurants but I’m the one who said as long as there’s plenty to do outside I’m happy.

I’ve also fucked myself over as I was thinking that I wouldn’t need to upfront my whole budget this week to book and would have quite a few months to save up. I feel sick.

How can they be “relying on you to pay your share” if it’s flight and accommodation? Isn’t that a hotel, not a shared villa? So your payment is your own business?

If you can’t afford it, consider pulling out.
If you need to spread the cost, check if the hotel does room only but costs the same to add AI at a later date. Or if it’s a package and the operator wants it all upfront (is it less than 10 weeks until you go?), have you looked at the cost of doing flights and hotel directly? Which may mean you pay the hotel part later.

If it was my family member, I’d cover part of the cost if they needed it, and have them pay me back nearer the time.

@NxnAllInclusive so if I understand correctly you and your friends will say our total individual holiday budget is for example £1000, and this includes, flights or other means of transport, accommodation, transfers, cost to airport in this country, food / drink, excursions, activities, spending money and things like insurance?.
You then start backwards and look at how much things in the area will cost and then book accommodation and travel based on what's left within your budget? Hmmm if I'm right I'm not sure many others do this. (However, that said it is a good idea).
As many PPs have said most people include flights, accommodation and transfers in their 'budget' and I think this is definitely how your family work.
So what can you do? Well I think you have to be honest with them and say you think that it's looking like you can't afford it after all. How far away is the holiday? If it's not booked yet, (you said in one of your updates you are expected to pay this week) if you cancel now then the others can adjust their own budgets accordingly. Much better to do ao now than nearer the time.
However, can you afford to save some extra before the holiday? Perhaps the night out for the birthday celebration and 1 excursion.

ifeellikeanidiot · 03/02/2020 21:55

I'm like you OP, when I think of my holiday budget, it includes activities, food, petrol, walking around money, the lot.

However in this scenario, holiday budget is def only flights and accommodation. Your problem was saying youd go with the flow, missing the meet up when this was organised and also misunderstanding what people mean when they talk about budgets.

I think it's ok to pull out, just make up some plausible excuse. Don't say its cause you budget differently to them Wink

Effiedg · 03/02/2020 22:28

Cost of a holiday also depends on how many nights you stay. How long are you going for? Are you going in peak season? How many stars does the hotel have? You get what you pay for. Well, mostly!

StCharlotte · 03/02/2020 22:40

Curiously, when I read your title I thought, "about €100 per day" but then I thought "or did you mean flight and accommodation?"

What I'm saying is the two are very definitely separate. To me anyway - and I've been on many group holidays.

Hope it all works out.

BackforGood · 03/02/2020 22:47

I would assume the price is for the flights and accommodation as it is AI.

However if I were paying for AI, then I wouldn't be planning to be going out and about - I mean, why would you pay for meals out, when you've already paid for them in the original price.

With regards to going on day trips and doing activities - I would have discussed that afterwards.
If you don't want to go though, you can stay at the poolside with a cocktail and a good book ~ my idea of heaven on a holiday Smile

Our budget is for the all inclusive holiday which we book as a package through TUI so it includes flights, accommodation and transfers. We don't go on excursions or eat out so the only additional money we spend is the taxi from our house to the airport and back again, buckets, spades and inflatables for the kids and a few souvenirs.
