To think I’m not being paid right?

I started working at a school as my second job January 6th as a lunchtime supervisor.
I get paid monthly. On the 24th, I got £180.
It doesn’t seem right with the numbers advertised.
I spoke to another dinner lady, and she said we get paid about £11 a day.
Before I got the job, I worked it out as £228 a month for the lower bracket pay. I should have asked in the interview but I always hate asking about money.

Am I looking at this wrong or am I not being paid enough?

(Although I did work a job that paid two weeks in advance, two weeks in lieu, so that was good on joining. But less so when leaving!)

I think that with payday on the 24th they probably pay 7 days in advance, 24 days in arrears - i.e. pay on the 24th January will be for the whole of January.

In January you will have worked 6th-31st, so 25/31 of the month.

25/31 *228 = £183.87

Next month, assuming its averaged and you are paid for half term, then you will get £228.

You've worked 3 weeks, so got paid for that, it seems

If you're registered as self-employed with HMRC, they might apply the BR code to your employment, which means you will pay 20% in tax.

What tax code is shown on your payslip?

Bluetrews25 · 03/02/2020 14:45

If they are taxing you at BR on this job, then when you do your tax self assessment you will get it all back PROVIDED you are still under your personal threshold allowance. This may continue while this is officially your second job. Look on it as a form of saving.....

JeezyPeeps · 03/02/2020 14:48

@lengthenmylutealphase yes, but people can pay tax even if they are earning under the threshold, but that would be very unlikely with national insurance

PigletJohn · 03/02/2020 15:08

I don't like the sound of this "very basic" payslip. It ought to show gross pay this period, gross pay tax year to date, tax code, tax office, NI number, tax deducted this period (may be nil but must still be shown) tax deducted Tax Year to date (may be nil but must still be shown), NI deducted (may be nil but must still be shown), other deductions (may be none)

PigletJohn · 03/02/2020 15:09

... and if it does show all those things, it will be possible to work out what's happened.

PigletJohn · 03/02/2020 15:13

And if you are paid per hours worked, it must also show number of hours.

I quit a Supervisor job last year because it wasn't worth the hassle for £180 a month.
I wasn't taxed but that was exactly my take home for 12.20 - 1.30pm.

mummmy2017 · 03/02/2020 17:58

£228 for 20 days work is £11.40 per day.
£118 is 10 days worked.

mummmy2017 · 03/02/2020 18:00

I get it, your cut off is the week before they pay you.
So you have the 20 to 24 worked towards February pay.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 03/02/2020 18:08

It'll be because you haven't worked a full month. I work as an SA is a 2nd job, I get paid £283 a month for 30hrs. It's prorata so that we get paid in the holidays
