To put 4 year old in the buggy?

We are just going to the supermarket, but we have a big shop and the basket comes in great use for heavy tins, bottles, bulky items etc. I don't have a car, or drive.

We've done the shop a few times with DD on scooter and just walking but she gets very tired and I end up carrying her with a giant rucksack of heavy shopping. It takes us double the time to get there and come back that way.

Do what works for you. Those who disagree usually drive and transport the shopping plus tired child in the car, far worse for the environment than what you plan to do.

MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles · 03/02/2020 11:41

Nobody would bat an eyelid if you drove

rosydreams · 03/02/2020 11:42

before i met my other half who had a car i had one of these

www.amazon.co.uk/Sabichi-184467-Pug-Shopping-Trolley/dp/B00CRXM4H0/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=shopping+trolley&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1580730041&sr=8-6

but yes i kept my pushchair for way longer than needed it made for a excellent pack mule.As well as a nap spot for when she got tired walking

WorraLiberty · 03/02/2020 11:43

Just do what suits you both surely?

PumpkinP · 03/02/2020 11:43

Seriously just do it, don’t even ask for people’s opinions because the ones that say no probably have cars so their child barely walks anywhere anyway. I wouldn’t hesitate!

Mrsjayy · 03/02/2020 11:44

Yes take the buggy makes sense but be aware somebody will start a thread about you dragging your poor child to the supermarket Wink

Mypathtriedtokillme · 03/02/2020 11:45

Why not? If it works go for it.
When my oldest was 4 she was a huge fan of the double pram/buggy when she tired of scootering. (I just to hang it off the back)

Actually even now at just 6 she will negotiate with her 2 year old sister for a rest swap (so her sister scooters while she rests for a short while)

DiscontinuedModelHusband · 03/02/2020 11:45

we used our buggy for at least a year after DS1 was really too old to need it.

mainly for days out (with big packed lunch bags, or long theme park days with lots of walking), so it was really being used as a trolley.

anyone that would have a problem with it wouldn't be worth worrying about anyway!

Sirzy · 03/02/2020 11:46

People with cars think nothing of parking right outside the door of a supermarket so taking the buggy to make it easier is nothing. She can always walk some of it if she wants

ThreeAnkleBiters · 03/02/2020 11:47

Just bring the buggy along and she can walk some of the way there then jump in when she gets tired.

ThreeAnkleBiters · 03/02/2020 11:48

I also agree with PP that lots of people drive to the supermarket from around the corner. A buggy is definitely better!

hungrywalrus · 03/02/2020 12:00

What you need is what the Germans call a Bollerwagen. That way you can put your shopping in with your kid and pull it. They are collapsible too. Have a google.

I think I’ll get one too.

Supertrooper98 · 03/02/2020 12:32

Do it for sure

RachelEllenR · 03/02/2020 12:38

I would today but long term I'd get a shopping trolley like a pp linked to (or online shop - I can drive and still prefer online shopping). I used to find it really hard shopping with a buggy though as couldn't manage the buggy and the trollley!

AJPTaylor · 03/02/2020 12:44

Never ask on mumsnet. You will be told that toddlers should be capable of Mount Snowden and you are setting your child up for a life of lethargy and the pushchair should be passed on by the age of 2. Or you should do online shopping to free up time to do craft.

In the real world op, crack on sounds sensible.

Aybeesee · 03/02/2020 14:26

Not expensive either. I've seen a few similar ones around where I live attached to a parents bike.

If I got a shopping trolley then where would my DD go? She'll ask mentor carry her on the way home.

Put stuff in the buggy basket or scan and shop.

It’s so refreshing to see this thread filled with people making the same point I’d planned to. Grin

As a non-driver, I did have to deliberately cultivate walking stamina in my DC, but you pick your moments and the supermarket is probably not the time to do this (see also: 8am nursery drop-off).

Sod anyone who thinks it’s unreasonable.

lengthenmylutealphase · 03/02/2020 14:31

How far a walk is it?

TheTrollFairy · 03/02/2020 14:33

I still bring the buggy out for my 3 year old. She’s quite tall so people do question why she isn’t in school Hmm I give no shits what others think about it.
I also used reigns on her too!

Do what works for you!

ChrissieKeller61 · 03/02/2020 14:35

I’ve put an 9 year old in a pram before if I’ve needed to

DownWhichOfLate · 03/02/2020 14:45

Do it! I used mine for my 4 year old as I also don’t drive and it’s a longish walk. Said child now does parkrun every weekend and is much fitter than his peers (who were driven everywhere).

RachelEllenR · 03/02/2020 22:44

I had a connecta toddler in the bag for ages for when mine needed carrying. Piggy backs hands free but she didn't always know I had it as I wanted to also encourage walking - though sometimes just too far (or I was in too much of a hurry) to dawdle! Anyway, if it works, do what suits you!
