AIBU Leaving A Position Off Job App

Not sure what to do! I am applying for a role with a council (so very formal background checks etc). I have been self employed for the last 12months but before that I took a job that didn't work out....It was a very senior post but I refused to sign the contract they gave me (ridiculous expectations - crazy target in a short time, they basically lied about the 'team' I would have etc etc) so I wouldn't sign the contract and left!

Really don't want to put it on the new application as I think it will look bad - although I firmly stand by my decision - however if they find out then it could be worse?

The post I am applying for is Officer - level 5. The job I left was a Director position.

What do I do?

I would leave it off. As others are asking - how long were you there? It sounds as if you didn't really start the job as you left because there was no contract and they'd misled you about the role.

If there is an unexplained gap in your employment history your application may get rejected. But it does sound as if you were not there very long.

Who are you giving as references? I assume technically your last employer would be one

AJPTaylor · 04/02/2020 09:31

How long?
When?
Did you receive pay from them?
How detailed are the background checks?

Jadetreesbringluck · 04/02/2020 16:28

I was there 3 months! Definitely got paid.

Then I think you have to include it. I did a Safer Recruitment training course. This would be a red flag

ineedaholidaynow · 04/02/2020 16:38

If you don’t include it, I meant to add!

If you were there three months and got paid you have to disclose it. You've good reason to explain it at interview, in that the terms promised weren't delivered on the contract, but how on earth did you start somewhere before signing anything!
