To think that a ‘family friendly’ hotel would have baby change facilities?

We recently went to a lovely hotel for a special occasion family lunch. The hotel is local to our area, very smart with lovely food and decor. They do weddings and it’s the sort of place you’d go with family for special occasion meals like Mother’s Day etc. We’ve been before but never with children (my DD is the first baby in the family).

They advertise themselves as ‘family friendly’ but they have no baby change facilities at all. When I enquired about this, the manager said it’s not a legal requirement to have them (okay fair enough), but he did also say that there had been a number of complaints about the lack of baby change in the past but the hotel’s owners don’t want to put them in.

The only place they could offer me to change 6 month old DD was the freezing cold conference room on a small side table, next to the staff entrance to the kitchens with staff coming in and out.

What I don’t understand is the owner’s reluctance to not put a baby change table in one of the loos? The ladies toilets are massive at this place and there would be plenty of room for even a small fold-down table in one cubicle. It is a nice hotel but not one that’s really ultra modern or with a Michelin star where a small baby change table would ruin the aesthetics etc.

In low season this hotel would rely on local families coming to their restaurant to generate business so I’m quite surprised. In fact whilst we were there, there was a large family party in another room with several small children (about one to two years of age) who would also need nappy changes so I don’t know what they did. It’s unfortunate because the meal was lovely but we won’t be going back.

My question is am I being unreasonable for expecting a hotel advertised as family friendly to have baby change facilities?

YANBU, I'd expect all hotels to have that facility (except child free ones obviously)

Mrsjayy · 03/02/2020 10:47

It isn't difficult to put a pull down table in a toilet is it ? No it is nota legal requirement blah de blah but Hmm

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 03/02/2020 10:50

I would make this on trip advisor so people are aware. Also might push the owners into putting in baby changing facilities

MindyStClaire · 03/02/2020 10:50

Nope, YANBU. It wouldn't even occur to me to check.

Mrsjayy · 03/02/2020 11:00

The owners sound a bit snooty I would email the hotel and ask why no baby change at a "family friendly" hotel.

Brefugee · 03/02/2020 11:02

I would expect facilities that mums and dads can use to change their babies.

I'd definitely get on social media and name and shame.

Nanny0gg · 03/02/2020 11:09

Do a Tripadvisor review

eddiemairswife · 03/02/2020 11:09

Why can't people change babies on their laps? Or is that a lost art?

RuggerHug · 03/02/2020 11:10

The manager sounds like they've told the owners about complaints but aren't being listened to. Bypass the manager, complain straight to the owners, saying that they've been made aware of it before. Never mind legal requirements, it's just decent to have them, they should have to be told. Agree with pp about trip advisor to warn other people who might want to go with children.

Mrsjayy · 03/02/2020 11:12

Where was the op meant to change her baby on her lap ? I Think other customers if a waft of babyshit hit themHmm

Mrsjayy · 03/02/2020 11:13

Would have something to say*

okiedokieme · 03/02/2020 11:14

Yanbu however family friendly doesn't mean infant friendly, they might be subtly (or not so much) indicating that they are only after older kids

BitchyArriver · 03/02/2020 14:39

I’m surprised this is allowed. I worked in a bar in Scotland that didn’t have baby change and as a result we were not allowed children under 5.

Bluebutterfly90 · 03/02/2020 14:45

I would suggest putting some kind of review up complaining about it.
Owners can be really reluctant to do anything that costs money unless it's going to reflect badly on their business if they don't.

AdachiOljulo · 03/02/2020 14:49

It's fine for them to choose not to provide family friendly facilities, but advertising themselves as family friendly without being family friendly is surely a breach of trading standards. They gained your custom under false pretenses. Not wrong to complain and report their dishonesty to any authority that might care, whilst acknowledging that they have every right to choose not to cater for families.

ScarlettBlaize · 03/02/2020 14:55

It's really not.

Lunafortheloveogod · 03/02/2020 14:56

I’d definitely leave a review somewhere.. the owners might not see the need if it doesn’t effect their income unfortunately. As long as it’s factual they can’t really argue about it.. yep some local places comment back on negative reviews like children who’ve spat their dummies.

Changing a wet nappy on a knee is fine (sat on the loo not in the restaurant) but doing it on your lap when there’s shit up to their shoulders is a whole different story Envy.

SVRT19674 · 03/02/2020 14:57

YANBU, they should be ashamed of themselves. Not family-friendly at all.

Twinklebinkletoes · 03/02/2020 14:58

It’s not relevant to this thread but they also didn’t have a disabled toilet (when I couldn’t find the baby change in the ladies toilets I looked for the disabled toilet as often the baby change is in there but they had no disabled toilet). I’m not sure but isn’t that some sort of breach? I thought all places now had to have disabled access/toilets? Or is that just new builds?

Yep I think a TripAdvisor review is called for here

Ponoka7 · 03/02/2020 15:05

@eddiemairswife, do you mean in a toilet cubicle? Most don't have enough space.

OP they have to have an accessible toilet. So if one of the toilets were big enough, it may pass the legislation.

They should have a separate disabled toilet, though, if there's room for one.

Sleepyblueocean · 03/02/2020 15:30

"I thought all places now had to have disabled access/toilets"

No there are lots of restaurants that don't have them due to old building design but it it would be expected to at least have a larger cubicle in a hotel.
Ds has to be changed on the floor ( to big for baby change) so there is always that changing option.

Dickensnovel · 03/02/2020 15:51

When mine were in nappies I had a changing mat (small, waterproof, fold-up) in the diaper bag at all times. Then the floor, or a bench, or park could be a changing space. Must have wipes, too! and a simple change of clothes....

SummerBreeze1980 · 03/02/2020 15:58

Yes, not family friendly atall if no baby change available to both parents. But in your circumstance I would have changed my baby in their pram.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/02/2020 16:50

My house is family friendly but I havent got a changing mat Grin
