Last night went to A and E screaming and crying in agony with lower back pain. I woke up with it yesterday and throughout the day it just got worse and worse
The doctor I saw wanted to give me antiimflammarys but I have had a stomach ulcer in the past. I also take transfix for fibro but i explained this was slow realise to keep my symptoms under control and it had not touched it.
Once I said this is was really dismissive saying “oh you may just have to put up with it”
By this time I am still crying in agony and my mum who I was with said “you can’t leave her like that”
So he said he would give my a dose of oramorph and sent me home with three diaizapan 5mg and told me to take one a day
That was great till about half and hour ago and I am now crying in agony again. I font know what to do. I am banging my hand against the wall in pain. I had back to back labour and this is worse.

I don’t understand why you can’t get an appointment until tomorrow afternoon, surely if you call your GP surgery at opening time you’ll get a morning appointment?

newlifenewme2020 · 03/02/2020 03:24

No all morning appointments are pre booked unless you are a child.
Not phoning an ambulance when I can get there myself.
Taken diazepan but he only gave me three 5mg tablets. The nurse didn’t question the doctor to if they should be 10mg and he scoffed at her

My husband said I go back to A and E or he phones an ambulance. He said I am certainly not soft when it comes to pain and if I am crying in agony it must be bad.

Your husband just wants a “quick fix” to get you back to feeling normal though? In reality you may actually be stuck around in A&E for hours in an even more uncomfortable place, and there’s no guarantee that they’ll give you the medicine that you want. There’s also no guarantee that the ambulance will arrive in a timely manner or even decide to take you to hospital as they have to triage.

Luscinia · 03/02/2020 03:38

If you are in that much pain, phone 111 for advice. They will either send you to A&E or you could ask for an emergency GP appointment. They certainly can give you oramorph but you need the cause of the pain to be diagnosed.

Shev1996 · 03/02/2020 03:38

Have you already taken all three diazepam tablets then? Despite any GP rules re appointments if you ring at opening hours with a serious issue they will find you a slot

Hollyhobbi · 03/02/2020 03:54

Have you ever had a kidney stone or a slipped disc? Both of these can be incredibly painful.

JolieOBrien · 03/02/2020 03:58

@newlifenewme2020

You need an injection for the pain. When I had kidney stones a few years ago my GP gave me couple over 3 days until I passed the stones. I don't know how I would have coped without them because it was worse than labour pains and I have given birth to 2 children without any pain relief in the past.

dontgobaconmyheart · 03/02/2020 04:08

Your husband shouldn't be calling an ambulance as an ultimatum when you say you can get there yourself Hmm.

What type of pain is it OP? What do you think has caused it? How did it come about? Any other symptoms or health issues? A&E will most likely give you a shot of oramorph and send you home with something like co codamol at best which you can buy at the pharmacy anyway over the counter. Can you use voltarol gel? TENS machine? Heat pack? Tiger balm? All worth a go.

I would request an emergency GP appointment OP and ask for suitable pain relief and further diagnosis of the issue. Your GP is unlikely to give you anything strong in any long term way.

OhDeez · 03/02/2020 04:13

I think it's silly of posters to be advising the OP when she hasn't been properly assessed at hospital. IF they do bloods and rule out all possible causes, THEN fine, use ice etc., but I would be demanding to be properly assessed. Are you in the UK?

Upsiedasie · 03/02/2020 04:15

I know it probably sounds daft but I’ve suffered with back spasms before and deep heat actually really helped. Could you get some?

When can you take another diazepam?

I echo the advice to call 111 and let them triage you ( unless you’re already at a&e).

Hope you feel better soon. Back pain is terrible.

Upsiedasie · 03/02/2020 04:17

What causes would be ruled out with bloods @OhDeez?

OhDeez · 03/02/2020 04:27

Infection for a start.

OhDeez · 03/02/2020 04:30

I have had all sorts of ailments with no raised temperature. Just pain.

Usually the ailments ending in -itis.

It's ridiculous that a patient presenting with severe pain would not have bloods taken at a bare minimum.

endofthelinefinally · 03/02/2020 04:30

I think most people are making suggestions to ease the pain until OP can get to a doctor.
I don't think anyone is suggesting a miracle cure without further medical advice.

OhDeez · 03/02/2020 04:32

I've had a kidney infection and normal temperature. That was lower back pain. Only bloods would see that.

LittleChoCho · 03/02/2020 04:56

It's possible you might have an impinged nerve from a herniated disc if it's that sore. They can be treated with steroid injections but you'd need a CT scan or MRI first to diagnose it. Def go back to the GP asap and ask for referrals for scans, along with proper pain relief. GPs can prescribe heavy-duty painkillers but it would need to be something that didn't interact with the Tramadol of course.

I hate hearing stories about shit doctors - there are so many great ones out there but if you happen to see a crappy one when you are at your most vulnerable you're less able to stick up for yourself. Cheek of him saying "You may just have to put up with it" FFS!! I bet he wouldn't. Maybe think of everything you want to say to the GP (write it down?) beforehand and don't let them dismiss you, talk over you or fob you off! Though hopefully your GP is one of the good ones. LittleChoCho · 03/02/2020 05:01

Oh, and when I had terrible back pain I found weed helped a lot but I was a lot younger then and realise that wouldn't necessarily be an option for most people! Wink

MummyOfBoyAndGirl · 03/02/2020 05:30

I hope the next Dr you see can diagnose & treat you Thanks

PragmaticWench · 03/02/2020 06:04

You should have other possibilities ruled out but it sounds like a herniated disc. I was screaming and sweating in agony both times I herniated mine, oramorph barely touched the pain, it was worse than back-to-back labour.

If you physically can, be at the GP surgery as it opens. Tell them A&E wouldn't help and BEG to see your GP. The GP can prescribe something like gabapentin (this is heavy duty but worked for me where morphine, amitriptyline etc. didn't) and can refer you for an MRI. They also need to rule out cauda equina, and any signs of that you get to A&E asap.

newlifenewme2020 · 03/02/2020 06:38

I am in A and E. I literary collapsed as I walked in I was in so much pain. They gave me a morphine shot straight away which was like heaven.

The doctor could not understand why the diazepam was not working until he said to me “it should be working having it 3 times a day”. I said the doctor before had given me three to take one a day over three days.

The doctor I think was not for believing me until I produced the very small box with two remaining tablets in. He couldn’t believe it that he had only given me three in total to take once a day
I said to him it was reason I came back that I was in that much pain and I couldn’t bare to wait nearly a full day to take something that would help.

So am being sent home with a prescription for 48 hours of oramorph, diazepam to take 4 times a day, I need to keep topping up with paracetamol and I can use anti inflammatory gel on it as well.
I have had a ultrasound to make sure there is no urine retention and had bloods done. They are also writing to my GP saying I need to see them in a week or so to see how I am getting on.

Yikes lass. I hope the meds get the pain under control and they find the cause soonest.

Robstersgirl · 03/02/2020 06:47

Oramorph lasts 4hrs, 6 at the most. I was given it in hospital recently and was told I needed to stay in until my last dose had worn off, they wanted me to stay 4 hours but I went home.

Avelinebread · 03/02/2020 06:48

I think it's entirely obvious the poster is in the UK because there is nowhere left on earth that is as neglectful as the NHS. Pay £50 for a private GP appointment and get the pain relief, diagnostics and referral you deserve. And stop listening to a bunch of loons telling you not to bother the nice doctor.

Robstersgirl · 03/02/2020 06:49

Just read your update. Glad something’s been done op. Flowers
