Coronavirus, schools.

My father has informed me I should not be putting my DC in school tomorrow. He is quite an eccentric character and I'm inclined to think, yeah ok dadHmm ..... but he's just said because of the fairly lengthy incubation/contagious period that erring on the side of caution is best seeing as it's now in York...who knows how far the virus will have spread in two weeks time and how many people will have got it by then?
Am I being completely bonkers for worrying about this?

CallmeAngelina · 02/02/2020 18:33

Well, do you live in York?

Awrite · 02/02/2020 18:33

Yes.

PurpleDaisies · 02/02/2020 18:33

Yes. Bonkers.

Schools will close if it is necessary. It isn’t.

crosser62 · 02/02/2020 18:33

Bat shit bonkers.
Seriously!
Seriously!!

slipperywhensparticus · 02/02/2020 18:33

Possibly

floatygoat · 02/02/2020 18:34

No I don't live in York!

You'll need to keep him off for a while if you want to err on the side of caution. Incubation is 2 weeks but that doesn't mean he wouldn't catch it. You're being unrealistic if you think 2 weeks would mean no possibility of exposure in 3 or 4.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 02/02/2020 18:37

A bit bonkers right now. Keep reminding dc to wash hands thoroughly and not share food, cups etc.

PristineCondition · 02/02/2020 18:37

Schools are a hotbed of germs, parasites and grimness. Corona would fit right in but it's not time to worry yet

TheoriginalLEM · 02/02/2020 18:37

Not bonkers but over cautious maybe. There will be more cases and there will always be risks in highly populated places like schools. However, this is a nasty virus that is killing people who are already vulnerable, so the elderly and immuno compromised.

If you dont fall into these categories then your level of concern should be the same as when we had swine flu.

I had swine flu, it was shit but here I am. Ordinary strains of flu will probably take out more people than the corona virus

PristineCondition · 02/02/2020 18:38

Ask if you do isolate for 4 weeks he could still catch it in five weeks when he's out

Deelish75 · 02/02/2020 18:44

It is quite concerning but I think we’ve got to carry on as we are until we’re told otherwise. (And really hope the government are on it)

chinateapot · 02/02/2020 18:45

My daughter is immunosuppressed on chemo in a school within 30 miles of York. She’ll be at school tomorrow unless she’s poorly or I hear that someone in her class is unwell.

LesLavandes · 02/02/2020 18:48

Get a grip

MollyButton · 02/02/2020 18:50

I think the Coronavirus doesn't seem to be as bad as this years seasonal flu. But they don't have all the data yet. (It's certainly not as contagious as Measles.)

anothernamejeeves · 02/02/2020 18:51

If they got it you probably wouldn't be able to tell anyway is it's very similar to normal flu

Glittercandle · 02/02/2020 18:52

You are being bonkers!
My son is immune suppressed and I know I’m over reacting by making him take hand sanitiser to school from tomorrow to use before he eats.

CallmeAngelina · 02/02/2020 18:54

How on earth do you know that?

Call me a cynic, but I don't know what this virus is, but it sure as hell is more serious than the Chinese are letting on the flu.

BettysLeftTentacle · 02/02/2020 18:55

Has he not thought about flu and norovirus? Because those are the ones to worry about right now.

In fact, has anybody panicking about coronavirus thought about how dangerous flu and norovirus is?!

Karenisbaren · 02/02/2020 18:59

My child goes to a boarding school where the Chinese have not long since come back, he still goes to that school.

I’m not as concerned about flu as
ds has been vaccinated (he’s the one I’m most concerned about) and he can be treated with tamiflu if he does get it. Yes flu is very nasty but there are measures in place to try to protect DS.

MollyButton · 02/02/2020 19:02

@CallmeAngelina
Well I got my info from Centre for Disease Control
And the panic about hundreds dropping dead to the streets seems to have gone from one video of one dead person who may or maynot have died from the virus.
I'm not panicking - people in general are not concerned enough about seasonal Flu. Unlike Swine Flu and SARs I think, this doesn't seem to be affecting unusually young populations - but is affecting the elderly just like seasonal flu.
And the UKs actions are far more proactive than with Swine Flu or SARs.
Of course if it seems to be spreading widely I would reassess, but I still sent my DC to school during Swine Flu, and one even caught it (but wasn't that ill).
None of these have been anything like 1919 Flu, although Swine Flu did seem like it had the potential to be when it first occurred.

Aderyn19 · 02/02/2020 19:03

I'm surprised universities haven't been more proactive since they are full of international students who will, within the last couple of weeks, have flown in from affected areas. And yet students are still bring told to carry on as normal. I'm not entirely comfortable leaving the decision to self isolate in the hands of teenagers.
If universities are still operating as normal, I wouldn't worry about schools, since they are not so likely to have lots of pupils who've flown in from affected areas.

BettysLeftTentacle · 02/02/2020 19:08

There are measures in place to protect your DS against coronavirus @glittercandle; thorough hygiene practices and good healthcare.

This isnt just some wild zombie apocalypse virus that no one has ever heard of before. We have coronavirus’ all the time in our common colds and other respiratory illnesses. This one is just more severe than ones we’ve seen before. This happens with ‘flu year on year as well, this year being a particularly good case in point.

The proper thing to do if you’re actually worried about it is to clue up. A lot a lot of the fear here is stirred up by the media with no actual scientific fact. The same media that would be happy to tell you horror stories about the flu jab, even though that is the virus that has killed far more people in this country this season.
