To ask about adding people to car insurance

Witchofzog · 02/02/2020 14:44

I only passed my test this year and it has been cheaper to add my partner to the insurance who has been driving for years. But he never had to sign anything. So I wonder what is stopping people from adding others to a policy without actually asking. I bet this happens all the time.

Why would it matter?

Witchofzog · 02/02/2020 14:49

Well I don't know really. I was ruminating on this at the gym as I was quite bored on the cross trainer Grin I don't know whether it would be dishonest or if it would affect them in anyway should there be a claim

Gingerkittykat · 02/02/2020 14:54

It would be dishonest and if the insurance company found out I'm sure they would not pay out.

ByAppointmentTo · 02/02/2020 15:14

Are you saying that you are the main driver but have put your partner down as main driver or have you just added him as an additional driver?

Zippyx · 02/02/2020 15:18

Adding your partner as an additional driver is far from illegal - even if he has no intention of driving your car. The idea is that, as your partner, there may be - at some point(s) during the next year - a time when your partner needs to drive your car. Perfectly plausible - and anyone who tells you otherwise is being overcautious.

Treat yourself with the savings! x

Yes but the op appears to be the person insuring the car. It’s her car. DH is a named driver. Price is determined by main insured driver. The op. If car belonged to DH and he insured op as a named driver on his insurance that’s fine. Possibly cheaper too.

We swap cars all the time. I can drive any car I want regardless of whose name the insurance is in and who owns the car. DH and I are either main insurer or named driver.

BeautifulBirds · 02/02/2020 15:39

When I had a car stolen, years ago, I had to provide driving licences of everyone listed on the policy.

Ameliablue · 02/02/2020 15:46

You have to provide a lot of personal information and copies of no claims etc. So would be quite hard to do without someone's approval, and if discovered that you had falsified any information, the insurance would be null and void so really not worth it.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/02/2020 15:47

My FiL is on our car insurance... He drives it a couple of times a year, but reduces our insurance costs. I was on his (as was DH) but not sure if we are at moment, we don't affect the cost of his.

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 02/02/2020 15:51

Adding me to DD's policy as a named driver saved her money so it was a no brainier to add me even though it's highly unlikely that I'd be seen dead driving her car because I'm a grown up not a boy racer Grin

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/02/2020 15:54

Dh and ds are named drivers on my car. They both drive it occasionally. I have a second car (long story) where dh is a named driver but ds isnt as it would have cost a lot of money to add him. We all live in the same house.

I'm a named driver on my.mums car. I've never driven it as she lives 90 minutes away. However she wanted me to be added in case i am ever in a position where I have to drive it. It's perfectly legal.

I don't know how you can add someone without their knowledge as you have to fill in details about points on their licence and details of any accidents they've had.

Witchofzog · 02/02/2020 16:10

I am the main driver and dp is a named driver which helped me to save money. The insurance company did ask about points and accidents but I perhaps wrongly assumed that this was to calculate the premium. Maybe they cross reference everything but it must be hard to do so

OP posts:
TakeMeToYourLiar · 02/02/2020 16:12

I have me DH as a named driver.

I am the main driver

It's still £59 cheaper

Bafflingly DH doesn't have a full licence, it's still cheaper

Ameliablue · 02/02/2020 16:17

They may not actively check everything at the point of application but you sign to say the information is correct, so if you hadn't checked with the person and got accurate details and this came to light at the point of claim, they could refuse to pay it.

Jammysod · 02/02/2020 17:56

As long as you're down as the main user, you're fine.
They wouldn't refuse to pay a claim just because you added him as a named driver & he hadn't driven it.

CarolinaPink · 04/02/2020 08:17

I'm still not sure what you mean.

Do you mean it's cheaper to add your DP to your insurance than for him to have insurance in his own name? If so that's true, but the point is he won't be building up a no claims record of his own, which will make getting his own insurance in the future much more expensive for him.

Apologies if I'm still missing the point :)

WidowTwonky · 04/02/2020 08:22

As you say OP, I bet it happens all the time too.
No issue with your scenario, or those mentioned above where it is family members who are being added. But the issue surely is where random people’s details are being used without their knowledge

Witchofzog · 04/02/2020 10:55

@WidowTwonky that's exactly it. My situation is ok but I was wondering how many people are on insurance policies unaware

OP posts:
Highonpotandused · 04/02/2020 11:08

My insurance is cheaper with my husband on it (even though I am older and have double the years of NCB Hmm). He never drives my car.

And when I lived at home I had my brother on it to reduce costs. Again he never drove it.

Don’t see the issue, we’re not doing anything illegal.

Patte · 04/02/2020 11:25

I put a friend on mine because there was a possibility he'd need to borrow it. I was pleased to find that made it cheaper! In the end, I don't think he ever drove it.

DB put our DF on his purely to make it cheaper. But that actually came in handy at one point when DF needed to drive it.

I think you can put who you like on, as long as they're not the main driver. Of course, if you didn't talk to the person you were adding, you wouldn't know if they had points, etc. You could end up making a false declaration, and I think that really would invalidate your insurance. That's probably the main reason not to put random people on your insurance!!

cologne4711 · 04/02/2020 12:05

I'm on my mum's insurance as it makes it cheaper for her but I never drive her car other than sometimes when we are visiting and we need to move cars around on her driveway to get in and out. She knows when I passed my test and that I have no points though.
