Why do so many viruses originate in China?

ohhkay · 02/02/2020 13:03

Please explain why SARS, Coronavirus and Swine flu have all started in a similar area.

Is it because the country is very large? Is it due to the large population?

Or is it selection bias?

Many other countries are densely populated with poor living conditions. And wet markets are not solely confined to China.

I'm genuinely curious, not racist.

Can't you google it?

DartmoorChef · 02/02/2020 13:11

I havent googled but I would think its because so many people are crammed into one space, making it easier for germs to spread more quickly.

PullUpsAreTricky · 02/02/2020 13:12

Also they more often live with their animals, also have more live animal markets.

WellHolyGodMiley · 02/02/2020 13:13

Something to do with food chains. Interested too.

keyboardwarrior1 · 02/02/2020 13:14

Coronavirus ilnesses are transmitted by animals to humans. China has a lot of illegal wildlife markets in crowded areas. Ideal circunstances for these diseases to cross the species barrier.

MyuMe · 02/02/2020 13:14

And lots from Africa...Ebola. Marburg.

I'd wager wildlife, climate.

Lots if things don't stand a chance in Europe due to the cold.

ohhkay · 02/02/2020 13:15

Many places eat bats etc

Skysblue · 02/02/2020 13:16

Well the BBC has had an article up for days explaining exactly this so perhaps read that. Simply put, it’s population size plus increased likelihood of proximity to animals.

saltysally · 02/02/2020 13:16

Goady score 20/10 OP
Saras and Corona are from the same family and I'm happy to be corrected but I think the Swine flu started in Mexico

Ofthread · 02/02/2020 13:17

Wild animals in markets, eating wild animals. It's not only China that practices this fyi.

ohhkay · 02/02/2020 13:17

I'm from North America, haven't come across an article covering this. No need to be rude.

Reginabambina · 02/02/2020 13:19

Swine flu originated in Mexico. These kinds of virus mutations occur when you have a high rate of illness amongst animals coupled with a high rate of contact between animals and humans.

meditrina · 02/02/2020 13:19

Flu often emerges in southern china because of the nature and extent of duck farming there, where flock and people more or less cohabit. Bird flu is (I think) the easiest to drift to humans, and the population densities means it finds a lot of humans rapidly

ohhkay · 02/02/2020 13:19

Sorry, I confused bird flu with swine flu.

I have a Filipino grandmother, I'm in no way trying to goad. I find epidemiology interesting.

Why the fuck is it goady ? Jesus wept we’ll be saying it’s racist to even mention it and we’ll all have to die quietly and pretend it’s not happening !

KittenVsBox · 02/02/2020 13:23

1 in 7 people in the world live in China.
MERS from Saudi. Ebola in Africa. Zika was Latin America too, I think.

Its probably not massively out in relation to the population.

tttigress · 02/02/2020 13:23

Ever heard of a Chinese wefarket, where people buy their food while it is still alive?

Here is a good if a little long explanation:

itsgettingweird · 02/02/2020 13:24

I also find it interesting but it's become something I've looked into more since I've become involved in genetics through ds.

Someone asked me the other day why new virus keep appearing and I said because earth is a nature of its own. The more we find vaccines to things the more things mutate to avoid it. It's what the earth does to control its environment and population.

It's been going on for millions of years!

I remember when HIV and aids was going to be the biggest killer.

But yes China has a lot of livestock and highly densely populated so the conditions for these mutations is more ideal geographically.

slipperywhensparticus · 02/02/2020 13:24

Can we have a thread with no bitching about this? Even I dont know where swine flu came from and I had swine flu! Couodne tell you where I picked it up either I'm assuming the bus but 🤷‍♀️

tttigress · 02/02/2020 13:24

*wet market

Lordfrontpaw · 02/02/2020 13:26

So - when we had battery farming here were the workers exploded to ‘super viruses’ or were the birds pumped with antibiotics to prevent this? Is that a factor?

Isn't it the case that temperate damp climate also promotes the transmission of droplet infections?

Which applies to southern China
