I know someone who’s driving without a license. What to do.

Not a friend as such but someone who lives up the road.

She’s a Facebook friend and she’s the type of person to post everything. She’s failed her driving test a few times and told us all on social media. I believe she’s most probably at test standard but the nerves get the better of her during her test.

A few day’s ago she drove past me in her car by herself, no passenger. I waved and thought wow she must have passed her test. So I went into Facebook - no status about driving test (she absolutely posts everything so likely she’d post it on there but nothing. I waited - maybe she had passed that day but nothing.

So I seen her in person a few days later. I said oh congratulations on passing your driving test - I seen you driving.

She said she hadn’t passed and denied all knowledge.

It was her in the drivers seat, no passenger, the same car she parks on the street that her partner also drives (he wasn’t in the car), there is no L plates on the car either - she learns with an instructor.

So basically she’s been driving without a license. For all I know she could have been driving around the block but this is still totally wrong in my eyes.

Would you report?

I don’t want to fall out with the family. They seem trouble and I don’t want any hassle in my life.

Yes yes yes report. If she were to have an accident she has no insurance to cover any damage caused to other people's vehicles. And god forbid she hurt someone.
A quick call to 101 or online reporting will do the job. It'll get passed to the local intel team or traffic unit.

ColourMyDreams · 02/02/2020 12:56

I would yes. Simply because if she has no licence then she has no insurance.

ginandgingers92 · 02/02/2020 12:57

Ps- you can do it anonymously. She needs to have more sense than to tell people or post it on social media if she's going to try to get away with something so irresponsible and dangerous 🙄🙄🙄

ForalltheSaints · 02/02/2020 12:58

Please report. It could be saving her from injury, as well as anyone else.

mencken · 02/02/2020 12:58

yes, report. Ignore any sillybitch 'don't sneak' posts because this is real life, not the playground.

she is not competent to drive unsupervised and so should not be doing so. With luck it will be only her that she kills but generally it doesn't work like that.

SilverySurfer · 02/02/2020 12:58

I think I'm correct in saying that most insurers ask to see a copy of your driving licence so if she has no insurance she definitely needs to be taken off the road.

I would report her.

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 02/02/2020 13:03

Definitely report

Heymacarana · 02/02/2020 13:06

Waste of time reporting as it’s simply your word against hers that she was driving.

Short of sitting an officer outside her house 24/7 until such time as she might do it again, there is nothing they can do. Clearly that’s not going to happen.

Deelish75 · 02/02/2020 13:09

Definitely report her to 101. I think the police have to see it in action (either themselves or camera) the car should then flag up on police ANPR. Make sure you have the make, model, colour and reg number of the car.

Bee2828 · 02/02/2020 13:10

Thanks all. There is actually a police lady who lives in the village, we have children the same age and I know her quite well. Do you think it’s worth reporting to her rather than calling 101?

OP posts:
slartibarti · 02/02/2020 13:11

No point in reporting as nothing will happen. You saw her driving once.
There's no evidence and she can just deny it.

Bee2828 · 02/02/2020 13:14

Thank you. Such a tough one. I am reluctant to report because even if I was to do it anonymously. She would probably guess it’s me after our conversation. Her other neighbours be unaware she doesn’t have a license if they aren’t friends with on Facebook or speak to her. She might be doing this more often. I am rarely out the front but I spotted her as I was getting out my own car!

Report, you can do it via Crimestoppers anonymously. Heymacarena is incorrect that there is nothing that can be done short of a police officer sitting outside her house. People can and do get caught as result of anonymous reporting.

Heymacarana · 02/02/2020 13:19

People can and do get caught as result of anonymous reporting.

She would just deny it. There isn’t a single shred of evidence other than OP saying she saw her. There is no way police would even bother looking into it.

I don’t like the bloke who lives up the road and he is currently serving a ban. I could just phone the police and say I saw him driving and you think they would take me seriously? Not a chance in hell, because you would have all sorts of malicious people making up stuff about people if that was the case

Witchlight · 02/02/2020 13:20

Just report - it is dangerous and against the law. It is not even a difficult one to decide.

Would I report a murder - yes.
Would I report someone walking about with a knife - yes.

Would I report someone who hurt someone in a car accident- yes.
So... would I report someone driving without insurance and a license- of course.

amazedmummy · 02/02/2020 13:23

I'd report, she may not be caught but she might. I know how frustrating it is to be a competent driver and mess up a couple of tests. I had a lovely car sitting on the drive but tough crap! It wasn't legal for me to drive it so I took the bus.

Fairenuff · 02/02/2020 13:23

Yes of course report. She can suspect it's you but you can just pretend you don't know what she's on about.

What's more important? If she hurts someone there will no insurance for them to claim on.

YouStupidBoy · 02/02/2020 13:27

@Heymacarana of course she's going to deny that incidence but chances are it's a regular occurrence so she can be caught subsequently when the vehicle is being driven.

And yes, you could report the bloke up the road maliciously (and many people do make malicious allegations) and it would be looked at the same as any other anonymous reporting.

Dyrne · 02/02/2020 13:34

Definitely report. And do it formally, you’re muddying the waters and putting your police officer friend in an awkward position if you try and do it via her.

They may catch her, they may not, but you may find that a mobile ANPR van “just happens” to be sat at the end of your road one day...

Purplewithred · 02/02/2020 13:36

Report on the DVLA website - you can do it anonymously. If she doesn't have a licence they will be the ones who know.

memberofseven · 02/02/2020 13:38

I would also report. So what if she knows it's you. Silly woman shouldn't be driving.

Plumpplums · 02/02/2020 13:46

I would tell her I'm reporting her, her knowing may just make her stop

Hingeandbracket · 02/02/2020 13:48

I suspect this is much much more widespread than we realise.

YouStupidBoy · 02/02/2020 13:49

Very widespread and very commonly reported.

Beautiful3 · 02/02/2020 13:51

Yes of course report her. She driving without insurance. She could kill someone. Try and film or take her picture next time you see her driving without a licence.
