Food is expensive

Went to aldi got few bits for the week and not a big shop for me and one infant. Spent £40 and it's not even a big shop. What do people do to save money on food? I can't imagine spending much less. I know it would cost waay more at other supermarkets.

What did you buy?

PurpleDaisies · 02/02/2020 09:38

Going veggie saved lots of money here.

stripeypillowcase · 02/02/2020 09:39

what do you buy?
ready meals are not cheap, but ingredients are.

Winterwoollies · 02/02/2020 09:41

Did you get sidetracked by the central aisle??? Did you accidentally buy a workbench, a foot spa? I did a big shop in Lidl for three and it cost £42. I love it in there. Mainly for the Portuguese custard tarts.

araiwa · 02/02/2020 09:42

Food should be expensive

A chicken shouldnt be £1- i would have serious questions about it in many respects.
Food flown in from the other side of the planet shouldnt be cheap

Franticbutterfly · 02/02/2020 09:42

Depends how well you want to eat. Frozen pie and chips is a lot cheaper than say, fajitas.

Lyricallie · 02/02/2020 09:43

I was literally just saying to my fiance that I was pleased how cheap Lidl was yesterday. We got our weekly shop for £28. Mainly lots of veggies and only meat was a roast chicken for tonight.

We had to get some extra bits from Tesco and it was extortionate I think in future in just going to tell myself I don't need the Tesco things lol.

PetPeter · 02/02/2020 09:44

The price of food is going to rocket next year after the transition period, when the full impact of Brexit hits.

Peanutbutteryogurt · 02/02/2020 09:45

I spend around £50 a week in Asda for the main shop. Depends entirely on what you buy.

goldenorbspider · 02/02/2020 09:45

Ok so I got

Toiletries
Toothpaste
Nappies
Sensitive shower gel

Turkey mince
Chorizo
Frozen chicken fillets these two to make jambalaya
Salmon fillets
Quick fry steaks
Ready made quiche

Veg
Cherries
Lychees
Blueberries
Salad mix
Frozen broccoli

Milk
Almond milk
Eggs

Carbonara sauce
Tinned tomatoes
Lasagnas sheets
White sauce lasagna

Hmm reading that back I know it's quite a bit for 40quid. We just seem to go through food!

Food is cheap.
It's housing costs that are ridiculously expensive.

Villanomme · 02/02/2020 09:46

We saved money by meal planning and buying only what we need for the meal plan.

We realised that we were wasting vast quantities of food each week, stuff was going to waste.

Mummyshark2019 · 02/02/2020 09:47

That is a shit ton of food for £40

goldenorbspider · 02/02/2020 09:47

Portuguese custard tarts

^^ easily done! Whenever they have a make up or skin care event my bill doubles

chomalungma · 02/02/2020 09:47

I think if you put the price next to what you got - then you'll be able to see where it went.

araiwa · 02/02/2020 09:48

Buy salmon and wonder why food is expensive ffs

TitianaTitsling · 02/02/2020 09:48

It actually sounds quite good! Enough for 5 days of main meals at least?

Enb76 · 02/02/2020 09:48

Cherries, blueberries etc are all out of season so expensive this time of year and you got masses of meat and toiletries so actually I think your shop in extremely cheap.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/02/2020 09:48

1kg carrots- 50p or less
Cucumber- under a £1
Lettuce, 50p
Potatoes... £2 for a massive bag
Apples- 25p

Strawberries... £2
Raspberries.. £2.50 for a punnet that will disappear in seconds...

It's what you buy more than anything.

Wildorchidz · 02/02/2020 09:49

Apples and pears are cheaper than cherries and lychees. Salmon and steak are expensive.

RaininSummer · 02/02/2020 09:49

As you say, there is a fair bit there. Obvious reductions would be to switch out the cherries, steak and salmon for cheaper ingredients. Maybe make some meals using lentils like a dahl and other veggie recipes. Frozen rather than fresh blueberries maybe. Seems a healthy shop.

goldenorbspider · 02/02/2020 09:50

Buy salmon and wonder why food is expensive ffs

^^ it's where all my money goes! Food is my vice

OP posts:
hula008 · 02/02/2020 09:50

That's a lot of meat

VirtualHamster · 02/02/2020 09:51

Start growing your own fruit and veg, you'll soon realise how cheap food is!

That sounds like plenty of food for 1 adult and an infant though, and you've bought toiletries as well.

If you want to save money, then ditching the expensive fruit is the way to go.

Strugglingtoquit · 02/02/2020 09:52

food is expensive but that’s loads for £40 so YABU!

If you’re buying salmon, steak, chorizo, cherries and lychees and really can’t figure out that to reduce your cost buy mince and apples etc then there’s no hope
