I’m not quite as witty as everyone else. I’m not quite as intelligent as everyone else. If I try to be funny, it’s usually cringe inducing.
I work in a corporate environment- I’ve been there for about 12 months now and my previous job was 12 years in a very small, very informal environment.
Suddenly, I find myself surrounded by ‘professionals’ who seem to know exactly what they’re doing. They’re intellectual, they talk about my industry (that I thought I knew really well) and sometimes it’s as though they’re talking a foreign language. I almost always have a knot in my stomach these days going in to my office as I feel as though I embarrass myself on a daily basis. I come home and analyse everything I have said to everybody and mentally chastise myself for it.

Anyone else? I really feel like I don’t belong in this world. I don’t know why they even hired me!

Me. Always. Socially mostly, as been at my job forever but whenever I think about getting a new job (so fed up and bored where I am) I read job descriptions / people specs and just think 'i could never do that'

And if I did apply and got job, I know I'd feel like a fraud and imposter - just thinking about it makes me feel panicky. Still only another 25 years to retirement!

Job descriptions and requirements have definitely got out of hand of late. Employers are asking for the world without offering salaries to match.

Hi Op, I think a lot of us feel this way. You've been there 12 months so you employers must have faith in your capabilities to do the job. Talking the talk is overrated.
I held my own in a position for 15 years which I had to give up due to health reasons at 35. During that time I constantly felt like I was a fraud but its only now in my 40s that I look back at that time and realise that just because I was quiet and not blowing my own trumpet the whole time didn't mean I was not up to the job, on the contrary, I was the go to for other colleagues when they needed answers and my services were hired before them most of the time. I would also regurgitate the conversations I had in the day and feel the guilt of 'I can't believe I said that'.

Relax and settle in and remember that those who need to talk themselves up to others are the most insecure and usually talk BS anyway.
Believe in yourself. KOKO.

I could not have put it better myself. Those ridiculously lengthy wishlists... for an insulting yearly sum.
