to think that fireworks should be banned

Some idiots have just set off a mini firework display very close to my house, leaving me with a crying baby, two barking dogs and two scared cats. I really cannot see the point of fireworks since having had pets and now a baby too - I think fireworks are dangerous, noisy and polluting.

Firework displays should be either banned or set up somewhere miles from residential areas, so those who don't want their evening ruined don't get disturbed. Am I being unreasonable?

No, YANBU. They should only be available for public displays on the major celebrations - Guy Fawkes etc. Otherwise there is no need for them at all IMO

Tortington · 01/09/2007 21:01

oh my dog shit scared of fireworks that have just been set off....hmmmmmm we might live near each other

nell12 · 01/09/2007 21:02

YANBU

I think we should adopt the system they have in USA: that fireworks are not for sale and can only be used on certain days and set off at official events by people with licences.

I HATE 15 October - 15 November where people seem to theink they have the right to set off fireworks every night just because it is approximately Guy Fawkes Night

berolina · 01/09/2007 21:02

YANBU.

Hate the things (outside organised displays). The Germans chuck them around (literally) on NYE (and about a week before and after). There are hardly any organised displays at all and you cannot go out after dark after Boxing Day in cities because of the bl**dy things flying about. As far as I can see, it is considered entirely harmless and normal

Alambil · 01/09/2007 21:02

I think fireworks should be kept for Guy Fawkes celebrations ONLY ON the 5th November, and only then by registered, licensed companies who do proper displays - not every idiot who walks into sainsburys

This time of yr it is completely annoying and frustrating so I don't think YABU seeing as it's only just Sept - but to ban them forever, that may be a bit hard (understandable though!)

smeeinit · 01/09/2007 21:02

no YANBU, ban the stupid things!
they should only be allowed at organised displays, i hate them!

PigeonPie · 01/09/2007 21:03

No YANBU. I completely agree and hate them. They might be pretty once in a while but come 5 November when they've been going off round us solidly for two weeks I loose sight of the prettyness and just think what a waste of money!

suzycreamcheese · 01/09/2007 21:07

no no no...hate them.. apart from displays orchestrated with music..

also get them at hogmanay new year time which never used to happen

they are dangerous and its mainly fools that buy them

wastingmylife · 01/09/2007 21:09

I hate fireworks too. In fact I hate ANY noise in or near my house after 7pm!! So I wouldn't say you're unreasonable, but I might be!

GodzillasBumcheek · 01/09/2007 21:11

I would say yes, great idea - only there are no displays near us. They should be restricted though to 5th Nov or New Year, although i think they actually did put through some legislation...

divastrop · 01/09/2007 21:14

YANBU-i hate them, have done ever since i was 10 and some lad tried to throw one at my dog(he jumped out of the way thankfully).

i totally agree about only having organised displays on november 5th and having to be licensed to buy/handle them.

i cant believe they sell such dangerous things to the general public.

oggsfrog · 01/09/2007 21:16

YANBU - I detest fireworks. I was hit by a rogue one at an organised display when I was 17. Luckily it just gave me a very small burn on my neck and singed a hole in my coat collar.

Evil things. Hate the noise they make and always spend Nov 5th worrying about all the animals they frighten.

I like sparklers though [smiel]

fryalot · 01/09/2007 21:27

YANBU

and at 10.45 tonight, when the stately home next door sets off their fireworks to celebrate the marriage of whichever happy () couple have just got married there, I'll be just as pissed off as you.

(maybe a little bit more if they wake up my two littlies)

grr

Neighbours could n't get fireworks the othe other week - told they are now only available in November and for Diwali and New Year.

j20baby · 01/09/2007 21:32

yanbu. i think they should only be allowed to organisations that sign something saying that they will only use them on bonfire night or new years eve.

Hurlyburly · 01/09/2007 21:33

YANBU. In my house, it's not just the cats who run scared of fireworks. I am frankly terrified of them. They sound like guns.

paolosgirl · 01/09/2007 21:34

Have you ever met anyone who thinks they're a great idea? Me neither...which makes me wonder why they haven't been banned or restricted to public displays? Is there something going on behind the scenes?

GodzillasBumcheek · 01/09/2007 21:41

Dh thinks they're a great idea. But we only get a few, and always do the display on 5th of Nov, so it's not just any old random day. As previously stated though, we would happily visit a public display if there were one

Not angry at you people btw, but at council who can't be bothered to do display.

PigeonPie · 01/09/2007 21:44

Funnily enough, someone's just let one off now! AAHGGHHH

My3Girls · 01/09/2007 21:46

How strange!! There has just been aload set off here too

We've just had 5 or 10 minutes of them here! Very, very loud - absolute miracle ds didn't wake up. I think this was an 'organised' display

fryalot · 01/09/2007 22:01

The ones that will go off here in just over half an hour will last until 11.00pm. They will probably start at about twenty to. They will be full of bangers and will end with a HUGE fanfare type bang! bang! bang! BANG!!!! which is practically guaranteed to wake the little ones (if I ever get them to sleep in the first place)

It is almost every saturday during the summer.

I wouldn't mind quite so much, but they refuse to do an organised display for the villagers on Bonfire night because they "can't get insurance"

grr!

and why do people feel the need to celebrate their effing wedding with fireworks anyway, when I got married we made do with a bottle of white lightning and the obligitary punch up!

Desiderata · 01/09/2007 22:02

But it isn't just Guy Fawkes who's to blame. Aren't there Indian celebrations that start in October and involve the heavy use of fireworks as well?
