To be annoyed that she turned me down

Ihatepeelingoranges2 · 01/02/2020 17:10

So today would have been day 1 of my cleaning business or so I thought , I put an ad up last week and got a reply from a woman. We arranged me for to come round today, when I got there I was excited to get stuck in and finally earn some money, we spoke for a bit and she asked me if I have any references, I said no. She turned me down because of this reason.

I could understand if she didn't like the way I clean, but give me a chance for goodness sake and see if you like it or not. Everyone has to start somewhere right?

Just annoyed that I wasted this day and this whole situation could have been avoided.

Rant over.

And they only show relevant crimes. Not theft.

EducatingArti · 01/02/2020 18:15

If you are self-employed you can't get a DBs check on yourself.

Shadyshadow · 01/02/2020 18:15

@Torchlightt that's an enhanced dbs check.

Basic or standard anyone can apply for.

WorraLiberty · 01/02/2020 18:16

DBS checks are only allowed if you're going to be working with children or vulnerable adults.

That's not true.

Anyone over the age of 16 can apply for a basic check.

Shadyshadow · 01/02/2020 18:16

If you are self-employed you can't get a DBs check on yourself.

Yes you can

Shadyshadow · 01/02/2020 18:17

And they only show relevant crimes. Not theft.

No they dont.

CoffeeCoinneseur · 01/02/2020 18:18

A cheek to ask someone on minimum wage to fork out for a DBS

Well I guess that's the difference between an £8 an hour cleaner and a £15 an hour cleaner then, and why I pay much more than minimum wage.

summervines · 01/02/2020 18:19

That is an enhanced DBS check. I recently had my computer repaired by somebody self employed who came to my house to collect it, he had a DBS check.

dwum · 01/02/2020 18:19

My cleaners have always come to me via personal references. Can you do some trials for free in return for honest reviews? That is how I started.

And get a check. You can do it yourself

A cheek to ask someone on minimum wage to fork out for a DBS

Where do you live where cleaners get minimum wage?

Villanomme · 01/02/2020 18:22

MrsTerryPratchett we pay ours £15 an hour, so no not minimum wage.

yeraballoon · 01/02/2020 18:23

Could you get a DBS and clean for some friends to get references as others have said?
My cleaner is in my house when no one is there, has a key, my alarm code and access to all of our private documents etc.
I wouldn't want a completely unknown person with no recommendations doing that.

pinksoda35 · 01/02/2020 18:26

I am a self employed cleaner and I started out with no references but to be honest no one asked.
I always went to meet the person beforehand and then arranged a date to start work from there, once you get started you will get lots more work from your clients friends/family/neighbours..
I have been cleaning now for a year but previously did it for about 7 years( I stopped after my sons birth for some time)
I have not had a DBS check nor do I have insurance and not one person has ever asked me either..
Good luck OP you will eventually get some work and then before you know it you will be having to turn people away( this is my experience anyway)

reginafelangee · 01/02/2020 18:27

My cleaner is from a small firm.

She came with references and a disclosure check.

This is someone who has a key to my home and knows my alarm so I want some reassurance.

TheyDoDoThat · 01/02/2020 18:28

She is given you access to her home. You are a stranger. Yabvu

Looneytune253 · 01/02/2020 18:28

To be fair I think it's pretty standard to have some kind of interview prior to employment (as a cleaner) and i wouldn't have expected you to be cleaning on your first meeting. It takes time to set up your own business so just take your time and keep at it if you're serious

Villanomme · 01/02/2020 18:29

@pinksoda35

If you broke someone's new V11 Dyson and have no insurance,I'm assuming you have the money put aside to pay for a new £500 vacuum?

northernknickers · 01/02/2020 18:30

Are you serious OP? Of course you need to get yourself references!! ANY employer, in ANY field, requires references ffs!! Don't be ridiculous!

lyralalala · 01/02/2020 18:31

DBS checks are only allowed if you're going to be working with children or vulnerable adults.

That’s only the enhanced checks.

And they do show everything, including thefts. It’s just that you are not allowed to discriminate on the basis of irrelevant information on it

Bluerussian · 01/02/2020 18:33

There must be a couple of good citizens who would give you a character reference.

AutumnRose1 · 01/02/2020 18:40

She should have asked for references before you came over

But you need references!

londonrach · 01/02/2020 18:41

Yabvvvvu. You dont just get some random woman to clean without checking their references. Sorry but totally understand why she cancelled.

deste · 01/02/2020 18:42

I would say you also need insurance.

WorraLiberty · 01/02/2020 18:42

A cheek to ask someone on minimum wage to fork out for a DBS

That's such an odd attitude.

The OP thought today would be day 1 of her 'cleaning business'.

Rather than a 'cheek', I would have thought it perfectly normal to expect a business owner to have a DBS and insurance.

And she's not on any wage at the moment if she's just starting her business.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 01/02/2020 18:42

I wouldbt employ anyone in my home without references from someone I could trust...

Not about your cleaning ability...

Just that you have access to my keys /paperwork and private life....

I don't want someone convicted of theft or a violence conviction access to me and my vulnerable family members.
