How long, in Scotland, can you leave your stuff at someone else's house before you lose the right to own it?

Stbxh moved out a while ago. How long before I can ditch his stuff?

I have never heard of any laws about this! If you've given him a fair chance to collect it and he hasn't then just donate anything reusable to charity and chuck the rest.
Depends what kind of stuff it is though. For example, a family heirloom like his grandfather's watch for example I would hang on to.

Mrsjayy · 01/02/2020 16:54

There is no laws i think as long as you give him notice to collect or bix them up and drop them somewhere.

Tell your ex he has until 'this date' to collect his things, and after that, you will do with them what you wish.

Lailaha · 01/02/2020 17:03

I think there was a thread the other day about someone who's ex was threatening them with small claims for getting rid of his stuff - maybe have a look for that, and see if there's any useful advice on this?

Mlou32 · 01/02/2020 17:36

I don't think there is a law as such. Give them ample notice (and I mean ample notice, not a week or two) that by X date, you need it collected or it will be disposed of. And keep proof that you have done so.

Certainly when I worked in a Scottish college with accommodation, there was a certain time that we had to hold on to stuff left in bedrooms. I think it was a year or so but we did have to let them know. Most dry cleaners seem to have a notice up re a year.

OhioOhioOhio · 01/02/2020 17:57

Thanks. It was the small claims law that made me wonder. I despise him to such an extent I wouldn't contact him to collect the stuff and I certainly am not going to drop it off at his. Its mostly just shit. But I wonder when it's safe to just dump it.

Box it up put it in a cupboard and forget about it or see if a friend will take it don't chuck it, out of anger he might come for it.
