UTI...it’s not going away

I was prescribed a 3 days course of nitrofurantoin for a UTI on Thursday morning. Since then the pain when weeing has eased off, but the urgency and frequency hasn’t. I also still feel like I’ve got more in there, even when I’ve just emptied my bladder.
I’m drinking lots of water. I also have one more tablet to go...should I go back to my GP on Monday or go to the walk in clinic tomorrow? I haven’t had any sort of fever with it at all really. My urine still smells a bit strange too.

regular UTI sufferer here - my GP gives me 3 days of whatever worked last time straight off; if that doesn't work he then sends a sample off to be tested for the specific strain. Might be worth callingl the GP on Monday if you can wait till then, tell them what's happened, they might want a sample rather than to see you.

@Purplewithred you don’t think it’s worth going to the urgent care/walk in tomorrow?

Poor you, phone 111 and get an appointment before Monday. I have loads of these, they're grim. You maybe just need a different anti biotic.

SpongeCake23 · 01/02/2020 16:55

@hoochymamgu we’ve got a walk in clinic over the weekend, it’s open tomorrow 8-8 so I’ll just go then.
I still have one pill to take tonight anyway, so I guess they’ll want me to finish them anyway. Then I can go tomorrow morning and see if I need a different antibiotic.

Sounds good Spongecake Smile

I get them too. This time my gp actually took a swab and found out I have a strep infection as well.... now on sodding Metronizidole which isnt great to be honest. Maybe suggest that?

CoraPirbright · 01/02/2020 17:01

The last time I had this, I took nitro and noticed that it didn't seem to knock the symptoms on the head as quickly as trimethoprim but it did make it go away eventually. I would take a wait and see approach - if by the end of the 4th day ie 24 hours post the end of the course, you are still suffering then I would go back in.

I too have had a number of these and they are not much fun. I am now on a low dose of nitrofurantoin prophylaxis dose indefinitely. I would go back to your GP. It is worth googling professor Malone-Lee who is a retired NHS urologist, now private. There is an interesting article in the Guardian about him. I intend to see him once, privately, as I believe he has the right idea about these infections and I want to get something in writing from him, to try and convince my NHS doctors about his treatment. Good luck

Go back op I had this and ended up in hospital with a kidney infection

SpongeCake23 · 01/02/2020 17:52

@newlifenewme2020 this is what I’m worried about, is that when you’d already had antibiotics too? I thought I’d be ok as I’m on them, rather than just leaving it I mean.

Definitely google Professor Malone-Lee and read that Guardian article. DIL has had a uti since last October, ie over a year now. Gave up on nhs and went private but still not cleared. Uti s can go on for years as the bacteria hibernate in the bladder wall and re-emerge later on, sometimes years later. So you think you are suffering from a new infection each time. Good luck.
