To not allow my child on school trip due to coronavirus

Hi all

My 6 yr old child is due to go on a school trip next week to Manchester City Centre. Part of their trip will be going on a sight seeing bus and visiting the library.

As Manchester has the second largest Chinese community in the U.K and with the Chinese New Year having just passed, it is to be expected the city has had a lot of families/tourists from China visiting the city, used the buses etc.

AIBU to be concerned about letting my child on this trip and to think the school is taking an unnecessary risk considering what’s currently happening?

Would you let your child go on this trip?

Tia.

Of ffs not another hysterical one. YABU. What exactly do you mean by "Chinese"? Do you realise thr virus is directly linked to the ethnicity, right? It's linked to an area in China. God people are ignorant. I also guess you wouldnt be able to tell the difference between Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean ect or are you suggesting that everyone from far East Asia is "Chinese"? Because that's actually very ignorant and borderline racist

Lucyccfc68 · 01/02/2020 13:38

Wondered how long it would take before we had the first hysterical reaction post.

saraclara · 01/02/2020 13:38

I wonder how many children live in Manchester? Have all the schools closed?

GreytExpectations · 01/02/2020 13:38

Ah stupid phone, mean the virus IS NOT directly linked to the ethnicity

SpillTheTea · 01/02/2020 13:41

Why get hysterical about it when there are no known cases in Manchester?

TheGirlWithAPrince · 01/02/2020 13:41

for those that believe it is merely a cold... atleast 260+ people have died so far, more people have died from it than has been dischared, now i wouldnt o stoppin my kid from goin to manchester because of it but i would be treating it seriously.

Even flights are being cancelled from going near china, over 12000 just in china have it.

LowcaAndroidow · 01/02/2020 13:41

Why would Chinese tourists come to Manchester for New Year? Surely if anything people from Manchester would be more likely to visit China?

PurpleCrazyHorse · 01/02/2020 13:43

Don't want to increase your anxiety OP but there's a much higher risk of your DD being injured in an accident in the coach on the way there, or you taking her to school, guessing you probably cross a road or drive? Clearly you do need to leave the house.

I would also presume there's much higher risk of catching other diseases too.

my2bundles · 01/02/2020 13:43

There are no cases in Manchester. You are just as likely to catch it in your own neighbourhood as you are in Manchester.

Cheeserton · 01/02/2020 13:44

Manchester?? Sorry, can't believe this one is serious. Nobody is that dim.

TeaAndCake321 · 01/02/2020 13:45

Lol, I didn’t realise we had the virus here in Manchester, I will be sure to don my biohazard suit before travelling to work on the train and the shops. Thank you for the heads up.

SpokeTooSoon · 01/02/2020 13:47

Shit. My in-laws live in Manchester. I’d better warn them to stay in bed today - and all the days that follow!

Honestly OP, don’t be daft. Keep calm and carry on. Wash hands before eating and always when coming through your front door. That’s what we have always done. Other than that, steer clear of people who are coughing and spluttering.

That’s the best you can do.

ThreeAnkleBiters · 01/02/2020 13:51

Your child is at a much greater risk of being injured in a traffic accident on the way there than of dying of coronavirus. It's absolutely right that internationally steps are taken to prevent a large scale outbreak. Even a tiny fraction of the population being infected would put a serious strain on the health service. The individual risk is still very very low.

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 01/02/2020 13:51

I work on the edge of Chinatown in Manchester. Can I stay at home next week (please!)?

I have spotted a few people walking round Chinatown with face masks on, actually, but you sometimes see that anyway

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 01/02/2020 13:54

We live in an area packed with students from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia
Maybe I shouldn't leave the house
Ever again
Can't be too careful
Hmm

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/02/2020 13:55

What is WRONG with you, @SunnyMiami? You can’t come onto AIBU and accept that you are being unreasonable in only your second post on the whole thread!! WinkGrin

Being serious, for a moment - the best thing you can do is remind your child to wash their hands, and not to touch their face - which is good general advice anyway.

Karenisbaren · 01/02/2020 13:59

Our school have cancelled a trip like that.

Waffles80 · 01/02/2020 14:04

The OP has said they’re appreciative of the reality check. RTFT and stop piling on.

HundredsAndThousandsOfThem · 01/02/2020 14:07

What you have to remember is that the level of risk which requires action from the government and the level of risk which is significant to the individual is massively different. For example 180,000 people die per year in the UK in road traffic accidents. Only on average 600 a year die from flu (or complications caused by flu). On a bad year it will be around 10,000. We still routinely vaccinate children and other vulnerable people from flu because even though the individual risk is very small over the whole country this would add up to increased hospital admissions and increased deaths.

HundredsAndThousandsOfThem · 01/02/2020 14:08

Also I don't think it's helpful for people to be unkind to OP. She got anxious, asked a question and graciously accepted the responses. There's absolutely no need for nastiness.

Drabarni · 01/02/2020 14:08

Get a grip, what about the kids going to school in central Manchester, they haven't been sent home through risk.

saraclara · 01/02/2020 14:11

I think the OP's got it now. I was a bit mocking which I regret. But even though I played a part, I think we should stop, as she's already said she realises she was unreasonable.

HappyHammy · 01/02/2020 14:12

Some people do.wear face masks for other medical reasons so it doesnt mean they are being silly

formerbabe · 01/02/2020 14:13

Before i clicked on this thread, I assumed it was a school trip to China, not Manchester! You are being ridiculous.

FarquarKumquatsmama · 01/02/2020 14:15

Lol for a minute there I thought you a parent of a child booked on the school trip to China that I was meant to accompany at Easter and posted about last week.

Manchester? Your kid will be fine!
