Is oatmeal same as oats?

I’m making cranachan for a postponed burns night. Recipe says ‘oatmeal’. Is this same thing as porridge oats. I googled and oatmeal sounds like it is porridge. But the recipe says to toast the oatmeal so I’m assuming just rolled oats.

Yup

TheGoodEnoughWife · 01/02/2020 11:01

I thought oatmeal was finer? Like ground up oats?

Sparklycrystals · 01/02/2020 11:02

It’s ground oats

ParsnipToast · 01/02/2020 11:18

Oatmeal is different. It’s pinhead oats, little small bits of oat, they take longer to cook than rolled oats and have more bite. If you use rolled oats for cranachan they’ll go to sloppy.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 01/02/2020 11:20

Not the same at all

BlouseAndSkirt · 01/02/2020 11:22

Oatmeal is different.

Porridge oats are rolled oats, oatmeal is harder and smaller.

However in the US porridge oats / porridge is called oatmeal.

I just made this for Burns Day too. My recipe said 'pinhead' oats so, thinking it must be some kind of very fancy oats, I spent £2.50 on a tiny tub, only to open it to discover it is literally tiny oatmeal. I ended up mixing half of this with basic rolled oats (porridge oats) as I like it to be a bit more rustic.
I also used some honey and thick raspberry syrup, as well as the crushed raspberries and thick cream. I slightly sweetened the cream with a little icing sugar. I was quite hesitant to put in a lot of the toasted oats but I wish I had put more of them in and less cream, because it was a little too much cream! (then again I did fill huge dessert glasses!).

TeddyIsaHe · 01/02/2020 15:43

Is it an American recipe? Because their oatmeal IS just oats.

LoobyLou1976 · 01/02/2020 15:49

Sorry forgot to add it is nice served with tiny shortbread rounds. Here's the ones I made for Burns Day.

No you can't use porridge oats for cranachan.

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/02/2020 16:11

Is it an American recipe? Because their oatmeal IS just oats. An American dish? On Burns night?

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/02/2020 16:14

No you can't use porridge oats for cranachan. The oatmeal turns the whipped cream into something denser. Oats are too coarse grained - you have oats and cream, not a uniform mix.

I thought I got mine from Morrisons, but all they are showing on-line is oatmeal shampoo for dogs Grin

Jess827 · 01/02/2020 16:18

I thought you could just make oatmeal by blending up porridge oats for 30 sec..... Not spending £s to buy them special... That's what we've always done...

TeddyIsaHe · 01/02/2020 16:19

@MereDintofPandiculation I mean is it written for Americans with their terminology used.

There are Scottish people in America, shockingly!

BarkandCheese · 01/02/2020 16:21

I opened this thread because I didn’t know either, found I also hadn’t heard of cranachan either. I really want to eat it now, it looks delicious. Is it always whipped cream, oatmeal and raspberries or can/do you use different fruit?

I use porridge oats for cranachan.
My recipe gives half the volume of soft brown sugar to oats, and then toast them in a frying pan until the sugar melts and they form crunchy little granola like clumps. Leave to cool before using in the recipe.
Yummy.

Isthisalcoholism · 02/02/2020 00:12

It was a triumph. Made shortbread too. All well received.
