A close relative has offered to pay for laser eye surgery for me. Where do I start? How do I find surgery recommendations? How scary is it??

I'm debating having it done. In my social group 3 people have had it done. 2 have had great results and highly recommend, one can no longer drive as she sees double and really struggles at work. My best friend is an eye researcher and says she would never do it. So I'm a bit torn.

A few places do free consultation so I would shop around for a bit and not go to the cheapest.

Taskmasterlover · 13/01/2021 14:11

Hi @dontlikebeards did you get this done in the end? I'm in your position now so was just wondering

elfin79 · 13/01/2021 14:14

I had mine done about 7 years ago at Moorfields. Julian Stevens was recommended to me by several different people and they were right. He's a god.

It cost £4800 and definitely is the best money I've ever spent on myself.

I was -3.00-3.25 in each eye and had 40/20 vision the day after surgery (that's apparently better than 20/20)

Taskmasterlover · 13/01/2021 14:22

Thanks @elfin79 did you have LASIK? (If you remember). My prescription is similar to yours. Booked a consultation for the beginning of March at an eye hospital similar to moorfields in the North.

dontlikebeards · 13/01/2021 14:25

@Taskmasterlover no not quite got round to it. Still hoping to do it soon.

It depends on your location too. I used the private eye clinic owned by an NHS hospital.

Taskmasterlover · 13/01/2021 14:36

@Tyke2 yeah that's my plan as well

Tyke2 · 13/01/2021 14:41

The high street ones have dozens of surgeons who call in for the day and may only be there every couple of months. Where I went there were just two resident surgeons who were there very day. You could speak to them in advance and were given their mobile numbers. All very reassuring. A fixed price too, no special offers etc.

WhereamI88 · 13/01/2021 14:44

I had it done at the London Vision Clinic. Best thing I have ever done.

I'm pretty sure it was LASIK, yes.

Moorfields was the only place I was prepared to have messing with my eye sight.

A couple of colleagues had theirs done at local clinics, but I'm too much of a wuss to consider that.
