Had a mole removed 7 days ago and am due to have the stitches removed this coming Wednesday but they are very painful and red. I clean it every day but can't shift the scabs, I have been putting germoline on it after cleaning. I'm trying to wait it out until my appointment on Wednesday as I don't want to waste time if they're fine. I've attached a photo.

they aren't actually closing the wound??

Neverfightamanwithaperm · 31/01/2020 22:31

Ouch. Stop the Germolene - it contains chlorhexidine which will delay wound healing (it's fine as a one off for minor grazes etc). Will need to heal by second intention now as doubt they'll restitch.

"I wouldn't bother going to a pharmacy or ringing out of hours tbh, straight to walk in centre, you probably need antibiotics"

I didn't mean for advice. In our area you ring out of hours for a GP appointment. There's a local hub. You can just turn up, but saves the wait, that's all I meant

They can also direct you to the most appropriate services. So yeah, call out of hours. Either via your GP number (usually have voicemail recommending what you need to do), or call 111 who will advise where you should go.

So yeah, calling first is advisable.

Yes they do.

I had the same when I had a mole removed last year - my stitches were definitely infected and looked just like that. Hope you get it sorted soon.

MrsClausTechnicolouredTeapot · 31/01/2020 22:41

Thanks everyone. Pharmacy would probably only tell me to get it checked out any way so I'll ring out of hours first thing and get it looked at. I had a mole removed 3 years ago and don't remember it being this uncomfortable.

I had a mole removed from my upper back last Friday and my wound looks nothing like that, and my wound is much bigger but 1) the stitches have closed my wound and 2) I have no redness at all.

I was told to leave the wound alone except to use Vaseline the day before the stitches were removed to soften the stitches up and then, after the stitches had been removed to massage it to help prevent scarring.

Waveysnail · 31/01/2020 23:29

Get it looked at. Clean with boiled water with salt in it

Rose789 · 31/01/2020 23:30

Oh dear don’t put germaline on stitches!!
Yes it looks infected and those stitches need to be removed. Cover it in a sterile dressing for now and go to your local walk in centre tomorrow

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/01/2020 23:32

Why would you use Germoline? I bet they didn't tell you to use that when they advised about after care.

Yes,looks infected.

Peterperfect · 31/01/2020 23:34

Yes it looks it. I’m no expert but I’d say you need antibiotics

YasssKween · 31/01/2020 23:40

Yep please get that checked!

Yeahnah2020 · 01/02/2020 05:06

Yes it’s infected

PerkyPomPoms · 01/02/2020 05:46

That’s infection all right

MrsClausTechnicolouredTeapot · 01/02/2020 11:54

Thank you for the advice everyone. Been to the minor injury unit and given antibiotics. Got home to a letter that the mole was benign so good news but a lot of hassle for something that didn't need removing after all. Grin
