Brexit and Donald Trump. Two things that didn't have to be by the smallest of margins. Two towering catastrophes that are going to be scarring our beautiful countries in unknown ways for years to come. And today the ugliness is just coming to a head. Sending love to celebrate the best of Britain along with a small sustaining snack on this bitter day.

OP posts:
LordBuckley · 31/01/2020 13:03

Of course it's a catastrophe. It'll destroy the British economy, and it'll ruin the future of today's children.

mrsBtheparker · 31/01/2020 14:00

we’ll be back in the EU

I'll start by saying that I voted remain, with the exception of the old git I married none of my friends voted Leave, all 60+.
However we have to try and 'make the best if it' and I think that this , Brixit, could cause a huge change in the EU, if we ever wanted to return to the fold it will be quite a different place.

fridgegrazer · 31/01/2020 17:26

No this is AIBU. For anybody to put their opinion
That's the forum - this thread was commiserating with those who regret leaving. Of course you are allowed your opinion. Enjoy your celebrations.

MovingBriskyOn · 31/01/2020 17:31

What a lovely idea.

I don't have a sweet tooth, so I'm sending you a bacon bottle and some London gin

Hugs appreciated and reciprocated

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 31/01/2020 17:37

I will reciprocate with scones and crumpets!
I see, and how would you be pronouncing ‘scones’?
(Runs away 😂)

MirandaGoshawk · 31/01/2020 17:48

Thank you.

Actually, less than 18 million people out of a population of around 66 million voted for this. It's awful. I feel terrible for our European friends. It's all based on lies - taking back control, sovereignty, yadda yadda - e.g. stuff about bent bananas, written by one B. Johnson when he was a journo.

fridgegrazer · 31/01/2020 17:53

Bluesrunthegame · 31/01/2020 17:58

Thank you so much, I have a sugar thing so can't partake of your cookies, but I might put together a bacon butty.

Desperately sad. Worried, slightly fearful but mainly sad today.

BestOption · 31/01/2020 17:59

Thank you for the thought

But actually MANY of us WANTED this as per the actual referendum AND even
more recently the General Election.

Our country is NOT imploding

We are the 5th biggest economy

The worst thing is that it isn’t a clean break- there’s another 11 months of negotiating and I don’t trust them not to put us in the worst pisition of all - half in half out if they manage not to do that, I’ll be celebrating in Dec 31.

We are NOT leaving Europe we are leaving the very fucked up EUnion. We don’t want one army, one currency, one flag, one governing body... all things being pushed for.

Nothing to do with the people living in the other 27 countries, they’re still
our neighbours & friends and always will be - no one is going anywhere

BestOption · 31/01/2020 18:09

Actually, less than 18 million people out of a population of around 66 million voted for this

Population is irrelevant. There was a 72% voter turnout if the remaining 28% didn’t vote that’s their problem.

As we already know, at the referendum Leave won 51.89 per cent of the vote and Remain won 48.11 per cent. The Electoral Commission reports that the overall turnout was 72.21 percent. These figures imply that 34.73 per cent of the entire electorate voted to Remain

Anyway, this is my last oust on this thread. The OP was trying to do a nice thing 🍰🍾🥂 and there are enough threads debating Brexit already.

Alsohuman · 31/01/2020 18:16

It’s a very sad day. I can’t watch or read the news. Thank you for the cookies.

Cyberve · 31/01/2020 18:19

I would share my chocolate cake, but I don't want to. Grin

Reginabambina · 31/01/2020 18:20

Well this is by far the most American thing I’ve read on mn this month. I now want warm biscuits which isn’t great because I am not allowed sugar at the moment. With chocolate bits that are still all melty Sad

Reginabambina · 31/01/2020 18:25

@mrsBtheparker hopefully brexit will make the EU better. I’d love to go back if it stayed as it is/back-pedalled a bit from the whole ever closer union nonsense ideally. It’s pretty pointless opening boarders if harmonisation policies make every country just another version of all the rest. Maybe a younger generation of EU leaders will be more appreciative of legal and political diversity.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 31/01/2020 18:28

I've just made a banana cake. I think half of it has already been snaffled by my family but I'll share the rest.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 31/01/2020 18:29

Yes, hopefully both nations can see sense before they destroy so much humanity has achieved.

Smelborp · 31/01/2020 18:40

JuneFromBethesda · 31/01/2020 19:08

‘Towering catastrophe’ sums it up pretty well, thanks LochJessMonster

glueandstick · 31/01/2020 19:29

Solidarity from this side of the pond.

Am not enjoying today at all. I am, and forever will be European.

Bunnyfuller · 31/01/2020 19:31

It’s certainly strange times. Thanks for the cookies, I will tip them in my booze (not celebrating, just taking the edge off the shittiness)

Dreamersandwishers · 31/01/2020 19:35

@Durgasarrow Thank you for your kind thoughts.
I will send you some homemade Kolaches , which I grew to love in Texas.

TresDesolee · 31/01/2020 19:37

This thread title actually cheered me up a bit, which is no mean feat today. I feel so incredibly sad about it all. Lots of solidarity and apple cake to the OP - what’s actually happening in the US today? Among all its other downsides, Brexit has made me politically myopic. I vaguely know trump is being impeached but it won’t make it through the senate, and the Iowa primary is nigh... is there something specific about today though?

Virtual arm-linking with anyone else feeling crappy about what has happened to their country tonight

Kanga83 · 31/01/2020 19:37

Cookies and hugs much appreciated, sending you a huge bottle of something strong in return. We're all gonna need it to dull the memories of the future coming months.

Lordfrontpaw · 31/01/2020 19:39

Any Gin?
