To ask your thoughts on valentine's Day cards for kids?

Theres a story going around about a woman who wants valentine's Day cards for children to be removed from stores and banned.

She feels it's disgusting for parents to give their children a card saying they love them and that the holiday is for couples and romance only, apparently all her friends and family agree and she would and I quote 'punch anyone in the face of they gave my son a card' Hmm

What do you think?

Jack valentine has been a tradition in Norfolk since Victorian times, long before Commercial gift giving, a mixture of a cupid and April fool trickster. Children and adults both receiving gifts.

I agree it’s for couples and nothing to do with kids.

MemoryLingers Quite. Really and truly, it's not for partnered people either, it is for single people. What's the point of putting 'guess who?' on a card you're giving to your partner? Confused

We don't give each other cards for Valentines.

Some people just can't bear to be left out of anything at any time. Up to them, of course, but that doesn't mean it's not nonsensical.

I used to get one from my mum. Neither of us are weird Grin When I got older, she wrote it left-handed and signed it 'from your Valentine' and I got so excited that someone other than her had sent me one Grin

It is weird. That is an over reaction to threaten violence. But Valentines isn't for kids.
I find the American custom of kids making and giving things to each other odd as well. Kids don't need to be thinking about romantic love, the nonsense about boyfriends and girlfriends is creepy.

Must be a slow news day, this threads already been picked up by the press!

Stompythedinosaur · 30/01/2020 18:05

I sort of think it is a romantic love thing, but then I remember being at school and having a friend who's mum always got her a little heart lolly or something and wishing my mum did the same! I remember it being quite a harsh festival when you aren't one of the admired kids so I get my dc a little something to say I love them (this year is a heart lolly and a tiny toy dog).

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime oh right haha they really must not have anything else going on, where's it been picked up?

It's a shame you had to mention it, HP, blissful ignorance of the tabloid rags is better.

Mamalexi343 · 30/01/2020 18:24

I just love reading how they twist the threads and act like they've written something totally original, it's hilarious lol

I remember aged 14 huffing to my Mum that my best friend got a valentines card and chocolate from her Mum.
Then my Mum left a card and a box of Black Magic on my pillow and I almost died of cringe.
