Setting out kids clothes in advance - is this worth it?

DH and I both work full time quite long days, weekdays are manic. To make things easier on a Sunday night I sort out 5 days worth of outfits for my 2 dc, incl socks and underwear. But I have nowhere to leave them out (at the moment they go on the first 5 steps of the stairs which is not ideal at all). It looks terrible and is a bit dangerous. I need a better solution or not do it at all! I'm thinking of some kind of easy access storage, maybe a slim set of drawers, so a drawer for each day! Is this too faffy? Any ideas would be much appreciated!

I set them out day by day - do the next days outfit the night before. Only takes a minute. I think it's more of a hassle to do 5 days in one go, especially if there's no space for them.

This is a fab idea that I may have to steal! For storing them, you can get things that yiu hang on the back of doors with big pouches on them I've seen people use them for prepping packed lunches before! (putting crisps snacks fruit etc for each day in each pouch) may be worth having a look at that kind of thing? They're quite cheap and don't take up too much space!x

Winegumaddict · 30/01/2020 09:11

I do this and I love having it organised. I have hooks on the wardrobes so I hang each day up on the wardrobe. Easy to switch if needed too as each hanger has a full day's worth of clothes. I do mine for work too but only the outfit not underwear etc.

Starface · 30/01/2020 09:12

When they were little I would fold clothes in outfits in their drawers. Marie Kondo style folding so you can see each grouping from the top. Pants in a drawer beside as it's easy to just grab one, no matching required. Socks are in a box but the front door as they are too slippery inside. We put on socks with shoes. So like your idea but they are in a drawer.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 30/01/2020 09:13

If a week's worth of clothes come out of your kids' drawers, can you now empty one drawer to make that 'clothes for the week' drawer and just make 5 little piles in there?

Baluga · 30/01/2020 09:14

I did this when mine were younger, I used this (pic) and used the 6th space for shoes

Sorry addendum. The folding in outfits was how I did all clothes. So literally from the wash. So no mammoth prepping session either, it was part of my normal workflow. It works until they decide they want to put outfits together by themselves...

popcorndiva · 30/01/2020 09:15

I have seen the drawers idea. People use those tall colourful plastic ones which you get in places like hobby craft. Otherwise I just do the night before and place it on their chair in their bedroom

What a huge link, sorry Grin

I have moved my children's uniform downstairs. They are in Kallax boxes, one each. Underwear and uniform all in one box for each child.

Once they are downstairs they eat their breakfast. I make their packed lunches while they are eating breakfast.

Then they get dressed.

Toothbrushes are also in the downstairs cloakroom so there is no need for the kids to be out of my sight so they can't faff about playing with their toys upstairs where I can't see them.

Thanks for the ideas! - I love the one in the link @ThePlantsitter

I iron all the children’s clothes every Sunday then hang them up in the wardrobe, each night I put the clothes on the radiator so then know where they are and it makes them lovely and warm to put on, on a cold morning.

FinallyHere · 30/01/2020 09:46

It's definitely worth having clothes left out. I do it for myself when I have a deadline to leave the house.

When are DC able to start doing it for themselves?

EmmiJay · 30/01/2020 09:56

What GameSetMatch said. I get everything cleaned/ironed on the weekend, even my own clothes. So its just about taking stuff out the wardrobe the morning of. No faffing about looking for things.

coffeeforone · 30/01/2020 10:12

When are DC able to start doing it for themselves?

not just yet - they are 1.5 and 3.5. Though the 3.5 year old will occasionally reject my pre-selected choice and usually let him choose an alternative to save the time wasted on the argument. those are the mornings i think it wasn't worth trying to be organised!

SapatSea · 30/01/2020 10:42

I used to leave out the morning's clothes the night before whilst the DC were getting ready for bed (they could help choose). I also had them get dressed before coming down for breakfast (it risked getting milk spills on clothes but saved a lot of time as one of my children used to refuse to get dressed before this regime was implemented so I reckoned it was easier to have problems with this earlier rather than later)

starfishmummy · 30/01/2020 11:01

I like that Plantsitter. That woukd be ideal for ds who has SN. I use one of those over the door shoe organisers at the moment, just for undies and socks, this seems like I coukd get everything in.

Wellhellooothere · 30/01/2020 11:04

Uniform is all hanging up in their wardrobes separate from other clothes, and the night before I leave out a set and add socks/pants. They then dress before brekkie. If I forget they'll get themselves sorted cos they know where everything is hanging.

misskick · 30/01/2020 11:07

This is a really good idea, In the evenings I'm so tired and then i struggle as I'm not organised in the mornings. I'm going g to be looking for a set of drawers to start this.

Bitofnamechanging · 30/01/2020 11:11

Mine are 2 and 3.

I have preschool uniform folded with school bags and coats in a cupboard. 1 basket for each child with polo top, sweatshirt and trousers.

Whichever child is going to preschool does pants and socks upstairs with a dressing gown. Which ever child is staying home gets dressed.

Then after breakfast it's teeth downstairs and uniform on including shoes. While the cupboard is open I grab the stuff and shove it in the car.

IMO it's just as quick to grab a tshirt from a drawer as it is from a pile on the stairs. Plus they can begin to make choices.
