Wearing jeans with my fat legs!

HappyExteriorSadInterior · 29/01/2020 11:01

Hi everyone,

I have always had fat legs! Picture two enormous turkey drumsticks and you will have an idea what I'm dealing with!
My thighs are the worst part, closely followed by chunky calves and flabby knees. I'm in my 40's.
I always cover my legs up and my clothes of choice have always been jeans. For years and years I wore bootcut, thinking the bootcut part maybe detracted a bit from the rest of my legs.

In the past year I have lost several stone. I was previously size 20/22 in jeans and I am now a size 16. I'm also trying to lose one more stone.
Since losing weight I have started wearing slim leg jeans. I think mainly because they fit me. (My waist goes in and its so hard to find jeans big enough for my legs but not gaping at the waist). But now I'm doubting jeans altogether.

The reason for asking advice is because I recently had a bad experience at work where a group of young guys (19/20) insulted me (I have recently posted about this too!). One of the things they said was about the size of my legs. The insults have upset me and further damaged my already low self esteem.
I know I have fat legs, I don't need anyone else to comment on them!

I'm now thinking I need to try and build up my self confidence and this includes rethinking my clothes.
Please note - I have been referred for counselling because I know I need help emotionally. I am generally at a low ebb with other things going on in my life.
The jeans thing is just one thing I can look at in the meantime.
I am also really interested to hear other people's views and what they wear.

Anyway, Sorry for rambling!

YABU - Don't wear jeans!

YANBU - Keep wearing jeans (but please advise me on what style!)

Thank You for reading.

Curly hair is lovely but very, very difficult to maintain. Much more difficult than straight hair - I have naturally very curly hair and I straighten it almost daily (sometimes I can’t be arsed), it’s miles easier to keep straight hair sleek and shiny than curly. My friend has great results with the curly girl method but it’s cost her a fortune in trial and error products that work on her hair, and it took a lot of investment in time to get it the way it is now.

I gave up on curls when they stopped making Pantene perfect curls 😢

@SunOnAll - Thank you for your message and advice. I'm sorry you have experienced something similar. That's great you used it to motivate you though.

@bibliomania - Thank you for your message. I like black trousers too! Snap with the mighty legs and shapely bosom!

I bought some jeans from Boohoo, they’re size 16 (I’m post baby but working on it) and they fit quite nice. They’re their more expensive version but only £25 or something and they always have discounts. I didn’t want to spend too much while losing weight.

HappyExteriorSadInterior · 29/01/2020 21:19

@ OverUnderSidewaysDown - Thank you. I wish I could control my curls! It just ends up being a frizzy mess and I use loads of hair products to try and tame it. But it never looks good to me.
In the past I have worn it down and then received a few comments unsurprisingly from more young lads about my hair looking shit! Yet again nasty comments ruling my life forever more!
Very good idea getting your jeans altered so they fit around the waist.

@Pumperthepumper - Thank you, yes curly hair can be lovely, but I have never been able to make mine look good. It is like a big ball of frizz unless I use loads of leave in conditioner, but then I feel it looks greasy. I am thinking of trying some kind of straightening treatment but just need to find the courage!

@PurpleFlower1983 - Thank you for the Boohoo tip. I'm the same with not wanting to pay too much for jeans at the moment because I need to lose another stone.
Good luck with your post baby weight loss.

I hate reading posts like this - it upsets me as I really really wish I could inject a bit of my own “don’t give a flying fuck” attitude Into you!!!

It’s unfortunate that you heard those utter dicks saying mean stuff about your legs but you need to try and not care - they are a group of little boys who feel the need to impress one another by saying shit like that. A real man who respected women would never make a horrible comment about your legs. So forget them ok?
Wear whatever jeans you feel comfortable in and hold your head high. I see women of all shapes and sizes wearing skinny jeans and as long as they fit well they look great - The problem isn’t your legs it’s that you’ve had your confidence knocked by those arseholes. Well done on your weight loss, that’s a real achievement too.

Beautiful3 · 29/01/2020 21:30

I know how tou feel op. Last year a group of 17ish old lads walked towards me and said, "it's big mama!" At first I was shocked that they'd do that in front of me, then I felt embarrassed . Afterwards my hurt turned into anger. I didn't tell my husband as I felt too ashamed, It kick started my weigh loss plan. Well done op for you fantastic weight loss. You wont forget what was said, but it will hurt less over time.Flowers

I joined up specially to also say you very likely have lipoedema. And i would bet the cellulite you think you have is a sign of it - it causes quite lumpy fat. It can look so different on different women and people confused because they've only heard of lymphoedema.

If you think you have it please search for it on Facebook. There are lots of support groups and other sufferers will relate to how much it affects your self-esteem. It can be very upsetting to live with, particularly if you are dieting like mad and not getting anywhere.

northernlittledonkey · 29/01/2020 22:26

I’ve got fat legs too. Midi dresses are my friend, v neck & mid calf, I wear jersey material as so comfy & wear with white trainers. My new uniform For 9 months of the year. Just a bit tricky in winter.

Waveysnail · 29/01/2020 22:29

M&S jeggings rock

olympicsrock · 29/01/2020 22:34

I like Tesco contour jeans. I have a size 16/18 figure with relatively small waist and big legs. They are soft stretchy and flattering. You need a belt though to stop them slipping down!

HappyExteriorSadInterior · 29/01/2020 22:37

@ShesGotBetteDavisEyes - Thank you for your post and advice.

@Beautiful3 - Thank you for your post. I'm sorry you had a similar experience but glad you have moved on from it and it spurred you on.

@Noooblerooble - Thank you for your post, I will definitely research this.

@northernlittledonkey and Waveysnail - Thank you both for your advice.

Those absolute nob heads! Angry Hope they get what's coming to them!
I wear midi dresses, leggings and biker boots at the moment. Cant ever seem to find the right Jean's. Can I suggest an amazing facebook group called Styled by Susie, she is a personal stylist and she does personal shops in bluewater and is so popular she has taken on more stylists to cover different areas. She also provides an online styling analysis where you find out, body shape, what colours suit you and reccomendations for clothes and shops etc. Theres a lot more too it, I'm not explaining it very well🤦‍♀️. The group is very inspiring and a good way to find out more about susie and her team

HostessTrolley · 29/01/2020 22:41

I’m a 16-18 short legged pear shape and I love my Levi’s. Top tip is to go get on different styles and sizes in the shop, then buy them on eBay... l buy 311 (shaping skinny) and 314 (shaping straight), the rise is just right on me and the lycra content makes them so comfy x

BikeRunSki · 29/01/2020 22:46

@HappyExteriorSadInterior, have a look at Sainsbury’s girlfriend jeans!

HappyExteriorSadInterior · 29/01/2020 22:51

@ExpectingToFly - Thank you for this advice, I will have a look.

@HostessTrolley - These sound great, thank you for the tip.

@BikeRunSki - Thank you, I will have a look at these too. My list of options is growing thanks to everyone's help!

I'm a short pear shape and often struggle with enough rise to cover my buttocks, yet not having umpteen spare inches of waist gaping at the back flashing my pants to the world.

Sainsburys are my current favourites. I liked bootleg, but I ended up having to get skinny because that's what there was after my bootlegs wore to death (always the inner thigh seam!). In the last year or so, I've switched to straight leg. By the time they've cleared my thigh they're quite loose and comfy. I always thought it was the wrong style for my shape, but it's not so far off from boot cut on me!

harriethoyle · 29/01/2020 22:55

Gap real straight jeans are a lifesaver for me and my bountiful thighs!

LaurieMarlow · 29/01/2020 22:56

Don’t mind the little pricks.

My advice is just to try lots of styles and see what works. There’s a dizzying array of cuts these days. There’s something called ‘relaxed skinny’ that works well for me. Large M&S have a huge array of ‘types’, which might be a good starting point, even if you don’t want to buy them there.

brittabot · 29/01/2020 22:56

What horrible bullies. They are the problem here not you.

I’m size 16 and I wear jeggings with long tops as prefer a bit of stretch but some firm material so you can’t see all my dimples. M&S are good for jeggings and I like Fatface longline tops for a bit of cover.

HappyExteriorSadInterior · 29/01/2020 22:57

@ShinyGiratina and @harriethoyle - Thank you both. This thread has been so great, I no longer feel so lonely with my thunder thighs! Thank you for your suggestions.

@LaurieMarlow and @brittabot - Thank you both for your posts.
Yes, they are pricks and bullies! I need to build up the strength to rise above these pathetic comments.
Thank you both for your advice on styles.

Tell your mum to mind her own business. Tell cheeky young lads to get lost e.g. “piss off sonny there’s a good boy”. And if anyone does it at work don’t stand for it - seriously out of line.

You are not on earth as an ornament. It is not your job to be beautiful (though I’m sure you look very nice). Who cares what random assholes or annoying relatives think? Why are they arrogant enough to think that their opinion counts at all?

Check out bodiposipanda on instagram - she is awesome on this stuff.

HappyExteriorSadInterior · 29/01/2020 23:09

Comtesse - Thank you for your post. Ha! I deal with my Mum by not seeing much of her for a whole host of reasons, it makes my life less stressful!
I wish the comments of random arseholes didn't upset me so much, this is something I am going to work on.
