To ask someone to help me understand the new Israel/Palestine deal?

So Trump has announced his new piece plan for Isreal and Palestine. Which from what I understand the Palestines claim is bullshit, in so many words. So what's the point in a peace deal that one side doesn't agree with? Am I missing something?

I think Palestine rejected the deal before it was even published which is a bit Hmm but since it's been published it looks like it's Israel get pretty much everything they want and Palestine not much, so they'll probably confirm they are rejecting it.

The deal is about 100 pages long and I'm sure you're able to find it online somewhere. Failing that, someone with more knowledge might come on here Smile

VerbenaGirl · 28/01/2020 22:13

On the radio this morning the Palestinian ambassador was suggesting that it is merely a smokescreen to detract from Trump’s impeachment and legal proceedings against Benjamin Netanyahu.

YouNeedIceForThat · 28/01/2020 22:19

To paraphrase Mandy Ruce-Davies, he would say that, wouldn’t he?

Jente · 28/01/2020 22:19

In essence, someone takes your house and offers you the box room as a settlement when you object.

Trump's impeachment will only be good for him. It'll be shot down by a Republican and he'll look like the victor / victim.

I can't think of a peace deal which benefits both sides.

Cherrysoup · 28/01/2020 22:37

@Jente exactly, only tbh, they’re barely being offered the fucking shed, are they?

Choosername · 28/01/2020 22:40

Just placemarking.

Jente · 28/01/2020 22:50

@Cherrysoup That's a much better point than mine. The dehumanisation of Palestinian people has succeeded. Eventually they'll end up in Native American style reservations if they're lucky.

Imaleh · 28/01/2020 22:57

Israeli here.

It's not a peace deal. No way in the world any Palestinian would agree and rightfully so. I think they've rejected good deals in the past (e.g under Olmert) but this one is awful, it gives them nothing and Israel everything. Deals take compromise, negotiations, discussions. This is just Trump playing to his evangelical Christian base.

InfiniteCurve · 28/01/2020 23:00

Israel are being offered everything they want.
Trump loves them, they love Trump - not really surprising.
If only people had realised years ago that the perfect way to get peace in the Middle East was give in entirely to one side........Hmm

It's unbelievable really.

YeOldeTrout · 28/01/2020 23:01

There was a good analysis from a journo, just now.

Israel likes it. Palestinians hate it. That tells you who the winner is.

The journo summed the announcement up as: The Palestinians are being told "You lost" so suck it up (last 4 words are mine).

Nobody expects Trump to make this deal stick (tbf, no other president since Carter has managed to make a deal stick) but it makes Benny look powerful for making the USA dance to his tune and let Trump claim he created an amazing deal. Netanyahu & Trump get the spin they wanted, nothing actually gets solved, Netanyahu supporters feel vindicated in ignoring his corruption.

To ask someone to help me understand the new Israel/Palestine deal?
Yenneferofvengerberg · 28/01/2020 23:04

Does the US even have the authority to do this? Will it change anything?

OP posts:
Imaleh · 28/01/2020 23:06

No one in Israel expects this 'deal' to lead to peace.

Right wingers like it as it legitimises the settlements. Many of us do not. And only an idiot would think this is a peace plan.

Amd what's the plan for the millions of Palestinian refugees? Any peace plan needs a fair and just solution to their situation (the stumbling block for Arafat in the end...)

Cherrysoup · 29/01/2020 06:49

I find it unbelievable that a country which has been settled by another nation has been eroded to such an extent. It is, as a pp mentioned, like the First Nation American situation, but worse in a way as Palestinians are being pushed out/forcibly removed out of their own country.

longwayoff · 29/01/2020 06:55

OP. I refer you to Steve Bell's cartoon in today's Guardian which says it all.

YouNeedIceForThat · 29/01/2020 07:35

@Cherrysoup you clearly do not understand the situation in Israel. It has never belonged to the Palestinians. There has never been a sovereign state of Palestine. It is indeed nothing like the Native American situation.
I find it surprising how little people seem to know about this situation, while happily espousing the Palestinian cause.
It really is not that simple.

cochineal7 · 29/01/2020 07:44

@YouNeedIceForThat really? You do realise that sovereign states are a relatively modern concept and blaming the Palestinians not to have had one is a bit disingenuous when the Ottoman Empire ruled the entire region for about 400 odd years. You do realise Palestinians (from all religions!) have been living in what certainly was already called Palestina before the Balfour declaration for centuries.

Choosername · 29/01/2020 10:23

Do you feel okay with the Palestinian people being displaced from their homes and living in apartheid conditions then @YouNeedIceForThat?

If it’s never belonged to the Palestinians (who have actually lived there since forever) then it’s never belonged and won’t ever belong to the Israelis either who have come along and taken over.

Imaleh · 29/01/2020 12:33

The whole 'it's mine', 'no, its mine' argument is really pathetic imo and never gets anywhere and disintegrates into mud slinging.

The reason the conflict has been so intractable for the last 100+ years is because BOTH sides have legitimate claims to the land.

FishCanFly · 29/01/2020 12:35

This is no deal

AdoraBell · 29/01/2020 12:38

Exactly what Imaleh said in her/his first post on this thread.

Yenneferofvengerberg · 29/01/2020 17:31

So this effectively doesn't change anything?

OP posts:
NoMorePoliticsPlease · 29/01/2020 17:35

Is unlikely to. When you look at the map it is clear the palestinians get nothing
