Severance pay calculations

DH has been offered voluntary redundancy. He wants to accept but the company is refusing to tell him how the redundancy is calculated. They have said the offer is generous but how can we tell if they refuse to say how they arrived at their figures. They have separated notice and severance but no idea other than that how they calculated it. AIBU to think that if they are refusing to say then the offer is probably not good. If it was decent wouldn't they make it transparent. They have also told him he can't tell anyone, given a week to decide and told him two days after he came back from bereavement leave from his dad passing away.
Big global financial company where he has worked for over 5 years.

Can he ask them to confirm that their amount is higher than the statutory minimum, which you can work out from the redundancy calculator?
It seems very odd for them to shroud it in secrecy. Usually firms will spell it out early on as part of the consultation process, to limit any negative PR, although it is usual to have a non-disclosure agreement as part of a redundancy package. In return, the package is more generous than the statutory minimum.
Good luck.

Have they given him the total but not the breakdown?

If so just compare to the .gov calculator amount and that will let you know if it's generous.

I believe that if a settlement is offered then they have to offer a solicitor at their cost to ensure that you understand what you're signing.

May be wrong about that, but it's what happened when I was offered an enhanced redundancy settlement.

When I was offered a bribe to fuck off and not sue for unfair dismissal they offered me about 4 months wages - way more than statutory. I asked for 3 times that and they agreed to double it. There’s no point asking for their calculations - they will offer what they think they can get away with.

There's a good guide here which matches my experience. It is written by a solicitor firm though so weighted towards the need to get their advice.
