To nip out to the shop while I have something on the hob?

Halogen hob, vegetarian chilli so plenty of liquid, shop less than three minutes walk away, would be back in ten. No children or pets in the flat.
I’ve just realised I’ve run out of salt. My quandary basically comes out of being a gannet and not wanting to wait any longer for my tea. AIBU

If it's only ten minutes I'd just take it off the hob and put it back on when I'm home.

I'd rather eat ten minutes later and have peace of mind.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/01/2020 19:57

No way.

HerstoryVsHistory · 28/01/2020 19:58

Oh YABUGrin

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/01/2020 19:58

I'd just turn it off for 10 mins too.

GruciusMalfoy · 28/01/2020 19:58

I've never had a halogen hob, but for the same of 10 minutes I'd take it off.

MissConductUS · 28/01/2020 19:58

Up to you, but I would turn off the hob, run out, then turn it back on when I get back. The chili will barely change temperature in ten minutes. Cover it if you can, even with just a square of aluminum foil.

TheTrollFairy · 28/01/2020 19:59

Do you need the salt?
I wouldn’t risk it. If it does burn the house down then you’ll have to wait longer for dinner

MangoM · 28/01/2020 20:00

Why can't you just turn it off for the sake of 10 minutes?

bez91 · 28/01/2020 20:02

YABU

Great that you've got no pets or children but sod the neighbours eh

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 28/01/2020 20:03

Definitely turn it off. Anything could happen in the time you were out at the shop. Does it really need the salt anyway?

RuggerHug · 28/01/2020 20:05

Nope, don't. Relative had a fire in her house start when she was there from a cereal box falling on to the hob when she was in the next room. Got in under control because she had an extinguisher there but it only takes seconds.

Furrybootsyecomfy · 28/01/2020 20:05

Ok, thanks for your answers. IA def being U.
Thanks @bez91, that’s why I was asking. Because it’s halogen (and at a low heat) I was wondering if it’s about the same as a slow cooker, but obviously not. I’m not a complete twat.

I’m glad you’re not going. YABU to even contemplate it though!

ifancyagreencard · 28/01/2020 20:10

I am known as Spag Bol woman by the local Fire Brigade after nipping our to collect DD from Brownies, leaving a pan simmering. The front door lock broke on my return and a firefighter has to rescue my Bol via a bedroom window Blush

Furrybootsyecomfy · 28/01/2020 20:13

That is an excellent point, I never even considered the door breaking or forgetting my keys. Thanks for the anecdotal evidence @ifancyagreencard

glueandstick · 28/01/2020 20:14

Just turn it off and leave the lid on. It’ll keep cooking with the residual heat.

HeddaGarbled · 28/01/2020 20:15

You don’t need salt in a chilli, so YABU x 2!

GarlicSoup · 28/01/2020 20:15

Madness what if you got run over?

Scarlettpixie · 28/01/2020 20:42

You don’t need salt on chilli.

Furrybootsyecomfy · 28/01/2020 20:53

The salt was for the rice- I’m doing Slimming World, GIVE ME SALT Grin

LigPatin · 28/01/2020 20:55

Depends on how much you like your neighbours I guess 😂

QuixoticQuokka · 28/01/2020 20:56

You can use a stock cube for salt

candative · 29/01/2020 00:51

I did this once with a bit pot of soup and came back to find my street cordoned off by the police! They had found a gun in the street. It all worked out okay as they were relatively quick about it - 20 mins or so...but what were the chances of that. The soup survived but I've never done it since.

mawbroon · 29/01/2020 00:58

I would, but my hob has a timer on it. I would set the timer to switch the hob off in case I was held up.

SilentAndQuietLight · 29/01/2020 06:00

My neighbour did this when I lived in a flat. First I heard was when somebody banged on our door to ask if we aware that the building was on fire. (Fire alarms never went off at all, which was reassuring)

Glad you've decided against!
