to work full time?

If I don’t need to. DCs are 4 and 6. Is it fair on them for both parents to work full time if this isn’t financially needed?

I haven’t worked full time since the eldest was born. I could find a part time role without too much trouble but the most interesting posts are part-time.

I am looking into how we can make this work - getting an after school nanny rather than after school club.

Yes, of course. I’ve never needed to work but will not give up my career progression to facilitate my husband’s. Puts me in a very weak position and I would have been bored shitless never mind the intellectual stimulation you get from interacting with adults daily.
The six months I spent on maternity leave were the most empty months of my life.
If you can afford the childcare ( we could) then go to work.
I expect to be criticised in the following posts however !

Entirely up to you. Work full time, part time, not at all .... Confused

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 28/01/2020 18:18

If you want to go full time then do it. Honestly as a mother theres always some stick to beat you with.... at least this way you're getting paid.

I went back to full time hours when dd was 18m
We could have afforded our mortgage and lifestyle at that time with me being a sahm or pt. I wanted more for my own life.
In the 4 years since then i have progressed to senior leadership which has given me more flexibility in that I can work from home and do school drop offs and pick ups as I wish
We moved into a larger house. Got a nicer car. Dd goes to any club or hobbie she wants and we have lovely family holidays.

I wouldnt change anything. dd is a happy confident girl and I am happy and fulfilled in life too

Ineedcoffee2345 · 28/01/2020 18:22

What ever makes you happy. Regardless you will always get someone with an unwanted opinion. Working mums. Part time working mums or SAHM who cares as long as you and your family are happy

Missarad · 28/01/2020 18:23

I've worked full time since kids have been babies. I did my nurse training when my youngest was a baby as I got pregnant in 1st yr. Had mat leave then did 2 years of full time nursing and placements and I had a job as well. Then qualified and worked. When I had 2nd child I also worked full time xx

namedecision · 28/01/2020 18:24

Presumably your partner isn't feeling any guilt about working full time?

stopgap · 28/01/2020 18:37

How full time are we talking? I think two long commutes and two 60-hour weeks is hard on young children. But ultimately you should do whatever makes you happy.

yellowallpaper · 28/01/2020 18:44

If it's what you want then do it. You don't sign the contract in blood, so if it doesn't work out, you can step back and go part time.

itsboiledeggsagain · 28/01/2020 18:48

I have a 4 and 6 year old and am looking to up my hours to full time or 4 days. Too bored at home.

Flexible working is what I am looking for so I can do some wfh or even be home based.

Grobagsforever · 28/01/2020 18:51

Bet your DH never asked himself this question.

His turn to go part time if you feel one of your should

BigGreenBaskets · 28/01/2020 18:51

Of course it's fine!

If do 4 days but if I had to do full time to keep a job I liked, I'd do that rather than not work. I'd lose my mind being at home all the time, and I'm very keen for our DC to see me and DH as equals in every way, not that a man works and a woman stays at home.

DelurkingAJ · 28/01/2020 18:54

I’ve said that I’m going to be polite in response to ‘wouldn’t you rather be part time?’ (usually from a semi stranger with head tilt included) when DH (who is much better with children than I am) is asked this.

I’ve seen too many women left in precarious financial situations (DHs dying underinsured as well as divorces) to ever consider not working. Helps that my DM worked FT and I adore her.

Pay for the best childcare you can afford and never look back.

newbingepisodes · 28/01/2020 18:54

Me and DH both work full time with two kids under 4.
My DH would never consider going part time, so why should I. I want to work full time, that's my right - tell anyone else who opposes your view to bog off! Do what suits you not anyone else.

ClappyFlappy · 28/01/2020 18:56

YANBU at all. Personally I don’t like working 5 days I tried it for a year when I moved to my current role but much prefer working 4 days.
