If you have a cleaner (or are a cleaner)...

When cleaning the floors, do they move objects that normally sit on the floor (e.g. box of bath toys on bathroom floor/ dressing up box in dc bedroom) and clean underneath them?

Our cleaner does 3 hours in our 2 bedroom flat and I’ve realised she doesn’t do this. Anything that normally sits on the floor, has a mark or dust underneath where it hadn’t been cleaned under.

Aibu or is this jsut rubbish cleaning?

Absolute laziness in my opinion!

Moondancer73 · 28/01/2020 14:45

I'm a cleaner and yes, I always move things on the floor to mop or wipe around it as standard - otherwise you get a build up of dust around the edges. That's sheer laziness.

MerryDeath · 28/01/2020 14:45

ia, rubbish cleaning.

obviously i do it myself, i particularly enjoy herding toys with the hoover rather than picking them up , but i am not a cleaner nor do i aspire to be.

NoSauce · 28/01/2020 14:45

She should move stuff.

SpoonBlender · 28/01/2020 14:54

Yes, smaller stuff gets moved - chairs and coffee table yes, but not the TV stand or the beds, sofas or wardrobes!

Mlou32 · 28/01/2020 15:30

She should be moving small things; bins, boxes of toys, washing baskets etc. Heavier things ie TV stands, wardrobes etc, no.

Pumpkinspicewhatever · 28/01/2020 15:33

I wasn’t thinking big stuff like beds/tv/sofa but more like small items that sit on the floor. The bath toy box has left a gross mark on the lino that I’ve had to scrub to get off and it makes me wonder how thorough she is really being.

Northernsoullover · 28/01/2020 15:37

Definitely move it. One of my clients actually puts stuff up on her bed or sofa which annoys me slightly as she doesn't have to. I'm very thorough. Would that work? You shouldn't have to do that but if it gets the point across...

Pumpkinspicewhatever · 28/01/2020 15:39

Yes, I guess I can move it before she comes but it just frustrates me because she’s supposedly an experienced cleaner. I feel like she’s either lazy or doesn’t know much about cleaning.

OP posts:
tootsey · 28/01/2020 15:42

I am a cleaner. I will move as much as possible, but would always state to any new client before I start, that the more they lift and set up out of the way, the more cleaning I will get done. Some houses have so much to lift that it eats into cleaning time.

onlyconnect · 28/01/2020 15:46

I leave my cleaner a note every week. Yes f I notice she's been cleaning round things, I tell her specifically to lift them up.

SpoonBlender · 28/01/2020 18:00

Have a quick chat about it - just ask for her to move and clean under things, don't get snippy or anything. We did that with ours when she started, and came to the same arrangement as tootsey. Clients are different and some get arsey when things are moved at all, so... communicate.

Expressedways · 28/01/2020 18:07

The cleaner of my uni halls would do this and we had to move everything no matter how tiny e.g. the loo roll or bottle of shower gel and put it on our beds or else it wouldn’t be cleaned. 3 hours for a 2 bed flat is ages (we also have a 2 bed but get 2 ladies to come together so it gets done faster) so I think there’s zero excuse except laziness. We have a box of bath toys and they clean under the box and also the box itself without asking. Obviously wouldn’t expect them to move large furniture or pick up mounds of laundry or anything like that but it doesn’t sound like that’s what you’re taking about.

Some do and some don't, you should state your preference but know that if it's very cluttered it will eat into cleaning time.

Our current one sometimes puts things "away" in really random places so I try to make sure there's very little out.

Missarad · 28/01/2020 18:25

Tbh I dont lift the heavy wooden toy box lol

Pumpkinspicewhatever · 29/01/2020 11:54

Unfortunately my google nest cam (which I don’t usually have on) caught her leaving after less than 1.5 hours worked today. I’m not remotely surprised but just really disappointed.

Just text and say it's been really nice having her but unfortunately you have finance changes happening do going forward your going to be doing own cleaning xx

TinnedPearsForPudding · 29/01/2020 12:46

My cleaner doesn't move anything - under mats etc or vacuum / sweep behind open doors. It's very annoying but I know she will be stopping. At the moment I am lifting and moving everything as much as possible but not much I can do about doors!
