to still have pain after tooth pulled 5 days ago

So, I had a tooth extracted on Friday morning, and it's still really painful today. It's also sore on the same side, but on the top (extraction was on the bottom - it was one of those big teeth). Still waking up in the night when paracetamol/neurofen wears off. Just wondering is this still 'normal' or should I be getting worried about an infection etc... grateful for anyone's experiences

Have you ended up with a dry socket OP? Where the clot that forms at the extraction site comes away exposing the nerve. Apparently very painful. OH had one after his extraction last year. Went back to the dentist who packed the gap.

Sarah510 · 28/01/2020 12:41

I don't think so mizydoscape… I'm such a wuss though I'm scared to look. Would I be able to see anything.

When I had dry socket the pain was unbearable. Pain killers didn't touch it and I didn't sleep for days.

Sarah510 · 28/01/2020 12:44

OK prob not dry socket then as it's 'bearable' with pain killers. just when they wear off.

It's normal for it to be painful 5 days on

If the pain is really severe then it could be dry socket, I always say you know when you have a dry socket because it's so painful

Post extraction infection is very rare, you would have a lot of swelling that was getting worse

Mgr1603 · 28/01/2020 22:11

Yes, i had an upper back tooth removed couple months ago, was sore for 2 weeks approx, i thought same as u. Was worried, then it just stopped hurting, no pain now at all

HoldMyLobster · 28/01/2020 22:54

Yes mine was sore for longer than 5 days and I didn't have dry socket.

Still pissed off that I lost that tooth. Fucking wisdom teeth causing chaos wherever they go.

Thelnebriati · 28/01/2020 23:15

Is there any kind of odour from the socket? How easily can you get it checked - you should be able to get an emergency appointment with any dentist thats open.

I had dry socket and it wasn’t even slightly painful. Dentist still had me come in to have it packed and antibiotics. Have a look, OP, honestly it’s not that gory! If there’s no - essentially - scab on it, give the dentist a call.

user1473878824 · 28/01/2020 23:20

Oh, and I was very worried about having it packed but it was totally painless. And instantly fell out...

Thelnebriati · 28/01/2020 23:25

The packing material seems to have some sort of local anaesthetic in it, its not painful at all. Even if it does look a bit like Brillo pads.

Is there any kind of odour from the socket?
How is she meant to smell in her own mouth?

steff13 · 28/01/2020 23:28

It could be dry socket. Have you been smoking or drinking with a straw?

Thelnebriati · 28/01/2020 23:31

5foot5 If you get a bit of food stuck in a dry socket you'd be able to smell it when you breath out, or lick your wrist.

SusieSusieSoo · 28/01/2020 23:34

Dry socket op. Wish someone had told me about it when I had my wisdom tooth out. Go back. Sorry no idea what they do tho xx

TwoPointFourKidsAndADog · 28/01/2020 23:42

I think if you google it you'll find pain abates within 7-10 days routinely.

Two members of my family just so happened to go through this on the same day even though it was completely unrelated, and both were in pain right up until day 10, then it was perfect again.

They both were worried by the pain but it helped they had each other to compare notes to!

user1473878824 · 28/01/2020 23:53

@Thelnebriati it’s soaked on clove oil!

user1473878824 · 28/01/2020 23:53

@Thelnebriati probably in it too.

wondertime · 29/01/2020 00:04

Oh my goodness I could have written this as I experienced the same as you. It took me two weeks to feel fully better, I felt sore, swollen and just generally really rough. Wishing you better soon!

Sarah510 · 30/01/2020 11:12

So still having a lot of pain. It's a week tomorrow. I looked at the tooth - or rather the gap! - it looks kinda white in the middle. It has started to close over. I don't know if I'm just being a wuss but I'm taking so much neurofen plus, it's the only thing that touches the pain. Took some at 11 and am counting the minutes til it kicks in. I dunno whether to contact the dentist or not. Waking up a few times a night. Maybe I'm just a bit of a 'weakling' though and this is normal. TBH I would prefer the pain before it was taken out - it was a lot easier to manage!!!!

PS don't smoke, and haven't used a straw since it was done!

This happened to my husband. He was in pain for a week to 10 days and then 4 to 5 days of discomfort. He was taking paracetamol and ibuprofen continually. He did go back to the dentist after a week just to check there was no infection or other problems, there weren't. Hope you're feeling better soon. Flowers

Thelnebriati · 30/01/2020 11:24

If its white in the middle it could be a dry socket, you really need to get that looked at.

Howgreenwasmyvalley · 30/01/2020 11:27

Go back to your dentist. Dry sockets can be hell and never just go away. It needs to be packed, the pain will instantly disappear. I was a dental nurse and I've seen people ready to chop their heads of with a dry socket Confused
