To go home because of morning sickness?

Appy21 · 28/01/2020 10:30

Would you?

I feel really really rough today and have already visited works toilets a couple of times this morning to throw up.

There are other people off at the moment in my department so it probably is not the best time to be going home but I'm not sure I can last all day with this nausea/vomitting.

It's been quite bad the last few days. One of my colleagues (sits next to me) is now off with a stomach bug also so I don't know if it's that or just typical pregnancy sickness but I do know that I feel fucking horrid.

I had a lot of time off during my first pregnancy because of morning sickness (I had it bad first pregnancy, second time round I haven’t had to take any time it because of the pregnancy)

If it’s affecting your ability to do your work and your going to be spending most of the day in toilet I’d say go home.

Orangecatfish · 28/01/2020 10:33

I’ve gone home oodles of times due to morning sickness. Including when my manager begged me to go home. You have a legal right. I just hoe you do better than me. I was sick right up until I went on maternity leave. Yes, I did have a girl.

Appy21 · 28/01/2020 10:35

Thank you. Usually I wouldn't give it a second thought if I felt this rough but with so many other people being off I'm not sure if it's taking the piss!

If you’re feeling really awful then go home . I’ve recently had two weeks off with debilitating morning sickness , and left work early once due to vomiting . It’s awful and so misunderstood! X

SquashedOrange · 28/01/2020 10:37

I wish I'd called in sick/ gone home more during my pregnancies.

You win no prizes for battling on when you feel terrible.

HillAreas · 28/01/2020 10:39

I’ve got terrible morning sickness just now and I’m 100% certain I’d be a liability in work. You do what you need to do for your health.

namechanger2019 · 28/01/2020 10:40

I know how you feel. I am just back from maternity leave this week and I have morning sickness with the next pregnancy! Really don't feel I can take anytime off this soon. Haven't told work yet as a bit worried how they will take the news!

moretolifethan · 28/01/2020 10:40

If you're feeling too unwell to work, then I'd say go home. I don't think the reason for the illness is really relevant?

Imperialmeasurements · 28/01/2020 10:46

Yes, I went home (although only once). My horrible (female) boss was not happy about it.
In both my pregnancies, I had morning sickness all day long right up to the birth. They were both boys.
It’s a dreadful thing to suffer, take care of yourself.

UnaOfStormhold · 28/01/2020 10:53

One thing I would say about pregnancy sickness is that it can get worse if you battle on - you need to focus on resting, getting as much food as you can down and staying hydrated, as there can be a vicious cycle where the more dehydrated you get the worse the sickness can get and so on. Do consider medication as again it's helpful to nip it in the bud early.

user1471592953 · 28/01/2020 11:01

Definitely go home and rest. I’m sure you’d advise someone else to go home in the same position - be kind to yourself too. I had loads of time off with morning sickness. Pregnancy isn’t an illness but it can certainly make you ill.

BottleOfJameson · 28/01/2020 11:18

If you're throwing up and unable to work then yes go home!

Go home, you need to rest. If it isn't a bug then try to find a way to maximise rest, like wfh if possible as well as time off ill.

ChristmasCakeLover · 28/01/2020 12:18

In the future obviously, not now.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 28/01/2020 13:02

Just came on to say please get some medication! Usually there's 3 different ones to try. First one didn't work for me but the second one......the relief was indescribable! I needed 3 a day the whole pregnancy but so worth it to keep working etc. as I was afraid of losing my promotion so wanted to keep the pregnancy to myself. My dr was great. He took one look at me and offered the pills. However with my first I was under a different county and they fobbed me off. I was so miserable and being so ill really affected my mental health.

Congratulations and good luck!

WaterOffADucksCrack · 28/01/2020 13:05

I'd recommend a week or two off to get used to the pills if you go down that route. Some of them may make you feel drowsy at first and I had to take 3 a day. And possibly tmi but it took a good few attempts to get the first one to stay down!

HillAreas · 28/01/2020 17:23

Mostly just hear to say that @WaterOffADucksCrack is now my official favourite username Grin
And also yes to the time off when you take the tablets to acclimatise, I was on 3 cyclizine and 2 prochloperazine a day and I slept so much during the day, I was just knocked out with them.

Rainbowsparkle · 28/01/2020 17:36

I had hyperemesis gravidarum whilst pregnant with my daughter. I was barely in work at all because of it. On the days I was in work it was agreed if I felt too unwell I could go home.
Go and see your gp. Xxx

silencebeforethebleeps · 28/01/2020 17:51

Of course you should go home, you're not fit to work. It doesn't matter why you're not fit for work - just that you aren't.

hopefulhalf · 28/01/2020 17:58

I wish I had called in sick in first pregnancy. Go home don't give it another thought.

goodgodingovan · 28/01/2020 18:02

I only had 1.5 days off throughout my pregnancy despite suffering from terrible sickness and nausea the first 3 months, low blood pressure and horrible heartburn in the next 3 months and horrendous rib pain in the last trimester - so sore that I was in tears by lunchtime.
The bastards made me redundant the month before I was due to return to work Angry

goodgodingovan · 28/01/2020 18:03

So in other words, if you feel unwell then go home or call in. Don't martyr yourself for a company who no doubt don't give a shit about you.

Lamentations · 28/01/2020 18:04

I have an impeccable sickness record at work but I had several weeks off with each of my pregnancies because it was the worst I've felt on my life and I was good for nothing. It was definitely the right thing to do and I feel no guilt at all. I hope you take some time off and start to feel better soon.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 28/01/2020 19:05

HillAreas thanks Grin And they are the exact pills I had (was soooo sleepy) so OP please speak to the GP about it. And remember it's better for your record to have a chunk of sickness rather than trying to go back too soon.
