On Sunday afternoon my teenage son broke his tibia, its a displacement break. They've decided not to operate for now as they're happy that the cast has put the bones back in position. He came home yesterday but he's in sooo much pain, he's crying, constantly (he doesn't usually) not sleeping and can't get in any comfy position. I know it's new so yes it is going to hurt and take a while to get used to. He's been told to take paracetamol and ibroprufen but it doesn't seem to be helping. He thinks his toes are swollen, I can't really tell, he can move them apart from his big toe where even the slightest touch makes him howl. He said his leg is burning, his ankle is painful too.
Is this all normal, should I take him to the gp's back to the hospital or leave it???
I don't know how to help, any advice would be great thank you.

I'd take him back to the hospital straight away, they can't leave him in that much pain. Poor lad.

Thehop · 28/01/2020 06:50

Take him back

TopOftheNaughtyList · 28/01/2020 06:58

I'd take him back for a second opinion. If they can reassure you the bones are back in position and all is ok then they need to consider different pain killers because he shouldn't be crying in pain.

Is he on blood thinner meds too to prevent a clot? I fractured my foot recently and I ended up with a very swollen leg and blood clots (Deep Vein Thrombosis). Not wanting to panic you, just checking. Hope he's in less pain soon.

AlwaysCheddar · 28/01/2020 07:05

Take him to a&e!

GiveHerHellFromUs · 28/01/2020 07:06

Yeah take him to A&E x

Jokie · 28/01/2020 07:12

Get him checked out again. Pain is normal but "howling in pain" shouldn't be, especially if he suspects swelling in his toes.

Hope he feels better!

GorgeousPie · 28/01/2020 07:13

Definitely get him checked out again. Hope he's ok.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 28/01/2020 07:13

Thanks, I was thinking I should take him to A&E but didn't know if I was over reacting. He's in a full leg cast and has an app at the fracture clinic on Monday but don't think he can wait that long 😕 no not on blood thinners, but he's going to be in a cast for at least 3 months, is that something he should be on?

Oh wow yes take him back. I'm the veteran of many a bone break, this isn't normal or okay. Poor boy! Best of luck OP.

Foodielady · 28/01/2020 07:34

I’m not medically trained but was told a fracture, particularly in the lower leg which causes the leg to be immobilized, can cause clots. My father has just broken his leg and was put on thinners immediately. The DVT was very painful - my leg felt very heavy and crampy and was swollen.

finkploydthethird · 28/01/2020 07:38

I'd go to a and e

My son is absolutely terrified of needles and the idea of an operation so when I suggested we go back to hospital he quickly changed his tune and suddenly the paracetamol had numbed the pain!! 😂 😂 Anyway I spoke to someone at the hospital and since his toes aren't blue they're not too concerned and suggested we call the GP to ask if they can give him something for the pain... So now just waiting for a phone call back. Thank you everyone for the reassurance that I wasn't overreacting, fingers crossed we won't have to wait long

Moving forward, every time he's 'ill' tell him he'll need blood tests 🤣

celebrityskin · 28/01/2020 14:57

Call 111 or your GP.

After this I don't think he'll ever complain about anything again!! 😂 😂 😂
