To feel totally rejected

Whitegrenache · 27/01/2020 21:48

Been made redundant today for the second time in less than 2 years

I'm feeling utterly defeated and useless

Not sure why I am posting this other than feeling totally sorry for my self

Have one month salary to live off

What the hell do I do

Fed up of picking myself up again

I'm sorry, DH and I have been in the same position, and it's a horrible shock and can knock your confidence if you allow it to, especially when it's happened twice.

Please please please don't take it personally though. DH manages a large team and went through rounds of redundancies for his team before finally he was made redundant too, and he hated it, he'd be nearly in tears because he had to cut some really super people, who were reliable, hard-working, high performing, it was just the company strategy was changing. Some of those really good people moved onto other companies that also then had to make them redundant as the sector changed. Just sheer bad luck.

A colleague of mine, in a previous role, led a review, the conclusions of which were that he found his own role redundant!

I went on to a much more exciting role, with much nicer people. DH's redundancy has brought only good things, and my colleague who had to make himself redundant got awarded an MBE a couple of years later.

Is the sector an uncertain one? Could you shift sideways or upskill for something less uncertain?

Hi @Whitegrenache it's a horrible feeling of rejection, being let go, but redundancy is so much part of everyday life it's just something you have to put down to experience and get your CV out there.

Believe me, there is no stigma nowadays, so many people are made redundant, at least it won't hold you back getting another job. Have your ex employers given you a positive reference, or committed to giving a positive reference if approached? Hopefully they've been supportive to you, even thought they can't keep you on.

It happened a lot in the early 1980s, I was made redundant twice in less than a year and my dh was made redundant 3 times in 2 years.

It happens but there can be good times ahead. We are both still employed and relatively happy.

Good luck in the future.

I’m very sorry to read this (((OP))).

Try to get a decent sleep and then regroup. As the PP said, things can change very quickly for the better, even when it doesn’t look as though they might.

Thinking of you Flowers

Wake up fresh. Get looking and applying for everything you're able to apply for.

You were employed again which is good. Shows you have good interview techniques and qualities they were looking for. Use this for elsewhere.

You can do this.

Happened once to me too. Left a job of 8 years on a Friday. My colleague who was made redundant the month before asked me to go with her to an interview at a temp agency on the Monday. I did as something to do. Got talking and I started work temping on the Wednesday. Lead to a permanent job and now I earn more money than before, with better morale, good colleagues that have become friends and more extensive, varied career prospects. Sometimes things do happen for a reason.
