Hi all,

So I'm asking for opinions please.

My car insurance is due to expire and I'm not renewing due to the car not being worth the mot repair.

Thing is this. Mot expires one day before insurance. So I am going to drive it to scrap on the day the mot runs out. (Been told it's vaild until midnight)

So I wanna ask WIBU to not tell the insurance that I have scrapped it and just let it expire the day after?

I don't know if they would be bothered or if it would mean I lost a years NCB for the sake of a day. Also would they refund me for one day 😂

You can tell ever after years of driving I've never been in this scenario. I've cancelled insurance before to scrap a car but not for the sake of one day lol.

I’m not sure but make sure they don’t automatically renew it.

HalfSizeMe · 27/01/2020 10:54

Most car insurance automatically renews, so make sure you tell them you don't want the policy to continue

Landlubber2019 · 27/01/2020 10:55

I wouldn't bother tbh, you won't get any money back and allowing the policy to lapse will secure your ncb for future x

pudcat · 27/01/2020 10:57

I would just let it expire. Just make sure it is not an automatic renewal policy. I changed insurers this time but didn't have to tell old ones.

2020BetterBeBetter · 27/01/2020 10:58

If you cancel a policy before the year is up there is often an admin fee which will be more than the cost of one day’s insurance. I’d just make sure it isn’t on auto renew and leave it at that.

WannaStay · 27/01/2020 11:06

Yes you are all right, I need to make sure no auto renew.

Omg @2020BetterBeBetter, I did not even think about them charging me but you're right, they probably would Confused

Ok, I will make sure no auto renew and then just let it lapse.

That's what I was thinking of doing but was not sure if I would get any come back. It's so annoying that the mot expires one day before the insurance. if only it was the other way around lol.

If you really want to cover yourself why don’t you drive it to the scrap yard on the day the MOT ends and say you want to sell/scrap it the following day when the insurance expires? That way you are covered either way.

HalfSizeMe · 27/01/2020 12:17

@2020 because if anything happens when the car is in their care overnight, the OP will be liable. It's possible they'll borrow the car to take someone home or whatever and have an accident on the way, or they'll park it somewhere and get a parking ticket etc.

They probably won't, but once you've left the car you never know.

ItIsAllChange · 27/01/2020 12:20

@HalfSizeMe they would need keys and ownership for that. Otherwise it’s theft and the OP will have insurance (although obviously doesn’t want to have to claim as that defeats the point!).

mencken · 27/01/2020 12:36

presumably you have done the Mot and it has failed? Be careful. If it has a 'dangerous' you shouldn't be driving it at all, and you could be on thin ice if there is a 'major'.

www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/after-the-test

BTW as you may know, no-claims bonuses start shrinking after two years of non use if that is going to be an issue.

Hingeandbracket · 27/01/2020 12:39

What total bollocks

HalfSizeMe · 27/01/2020 12:45

Of course it's not bollocks. The parking ticket would go to the registered owner - the OP. She could then try to fight it and prove it had been left in their care overnight, but a private parking company isn't easy to deal with.

TopOftheNaughtyList · 27/01/2020 12:45

Call the insurers (if it's auto renew, and most are) and tell them you don't wish to renew your policy. You don't have to tell them anything about what you're doing with the car. I just changed insurance companies for my DDs car and called the old insurers and said please don't renew. They did ask if there was a reason but you can either fib and say you're selling the car, or say that you'd rather not share your reasons.

frickinlaserbeams · 27/01/2020 12:55

Scrap places will come to you to pick the car up - try www.scrapcarcomparison.co.uk/scrap-my-car-now/

thrree · 27/01/2020 13:01

Just met it expire. And yes check for auto renewal, mine is expiring soon and I just contacted them to tell them not to renew.

WannaStay · 27/01/2020 13:09

I have just cancelled the auto renew. So that's all done, thank you Smile

To the poster who asked if I had put it in for the mot already. No I have not, car was in the garage last week for something else and they told me then it's going to fail.

Thank you @frickinlaserbeams, I will look at that site. If I could get it picked up that would be better. I did ask our local scrapper but they said nope. Drop it off or pay someone to tow it. 🤷
