The car is in finance in her mums name.
Her mum has never drove the car but is named as main driver.
The girl is named on insurance but she is the only person who drives the car daily.

DH and I have two cars between us. One is in my name and one is in his name and we are both named drivers on the other. However we both use both of them and I couldn’t really say which car I use more eg it’ll depend on who has the kids as one car is much bigger than the other.

Should I be concerned? I don’t understand.

I was actively told by More Than to put me as the main driver when i had told them it was my partner who was the main driver. I questioned them three times to make sure it wasn’t an issue and was very very clear and they told me to do it. 🤷‍♀️

Thanks to those upthread who confirmed an insurer would pay out for third party in any event, that's actually very comforting!

What we do, two adults, two teens, is have a family policy. DH and I both have our own cars, and both are named on each. Then we have a "pool" car, which is in eldest DD name, but has DH and I as named drivers too. We are just about to add second DD. Eldest benefits from no claims, and also from the fact both parents are on the policy, and we have a total of 3 cars. Her insurance halved in the second year, from approx £1k to £500.

Why did they tell you that? Did you call for a quote, tell them you were main driver and they told you to put your partner? Did they call you after you did it online? What happened?

I wouldn't have thought so. It would only be suspicious if you were the main driver on both cars and this made your insurance costs much cheaper.

My DD passed her test last week and I spent much of the weekend looking for insurance on her behalf. The cost of having a policy in her name is huge, but we factored this into the whole car ownership expense.

If she is claim free when it comes to the renewal is should be around half the cost because of her NCD so it's only astronomical for the first year. Her insurance was £850 on a Ford Ka, parked on the road with an annual mileage of up to 4000 miles each year. DH and I are on the policy as named drivers as we may drive it every now and again - this brought the price down considerably.

Fronting the insurance is not only illegal but also denies the young person the opportunity to build NCD. They may find that their insurance is still very high when they take their own policy out, whenever that may be.
