Strawberry Marks

Kerris2020 · 27/01/2020 05:47

My daughter is 4 months in a couple a days.
A few days after she was born a ‘strawberry birth mark’ appeared on her side. A couple weeks after this a few more appeared. The doctor checked them and said they were fine and would get bigger before they started to fade. She has had another few show up in the last couple weeks and now has near on 10 of them in total all over her torso and legs. Is it common to have this many of them and new ones appear at 4 months or do I need to get a specialist to check them over?

My daughter had an angel's kiss when she was born. It faded, but still shows up when she's crying.

I'd be a little concerned with the new ones showing up. It wouldn't hurt to get another opinion, I don't think.

Is it haemanioma ?

Member984815 · 27/01/2020 07:39

Haemangioma I mean stupid phone correcting me

My brother had a large strawberry birthmark his thigh when he was born - very dark red, raised. As he grew it faded and had completely disappeared by age 5.

I would probably get them checked out in your position, but if given the all clear please try not to worry too much about the future, many of them may totally disappear over time.

She has one that’s raised but about 9 that are small and only look like little red dots.

My son had a haemangioma on his face which grew in size. My Gp referred him to dermatology and he had it treated with propranolol for 6 months. I would get referred for an opinion if you can. They do disappear with time , but they may treat or monitor depending on location.

Mummyshark2019 · 27/01/2020 09:34

I would get a skin specialist to look at them. My son had one but it is very faint now and faded over the years. He only had the one though, not multiple.

bridgetreilly · 27/01/2020 09:45

They don't necessarily disappear. I mean, I'm 45 and mine's still as obvious as it ever was. But little small ones like red dots? I'd want a specialist just to check that wasn't something else going on, tbh.

Member984815 · 27/01/2020 09:57

@boysadear my niece had one across her face and down her neck and was treated for it too with propranolol , you can't tell she ever had it now

I second the dr visit

My daughter had one that, ironically, was strawberry shaped and around the size of a 50p coin, on her stomach. She is now 10 and its shrunk to the side of a 5p coin and is far less noticeable as the edges have faded etc.

My DD has a large one on the back of her head/nape of her neck and dotted around it are several pin-prick type red marks. I have a few of those as well (mainly on my legs).

I’d definitely go back to the doctor for a check up as they do advise to do so if more appear. I wouldn’t say it’s something to be hugely worried about as my DD is two and I’m still finding new clusters of them around her main strawberry birthmark and the Paediatrician isn’t concerned by them, but for peace of mind and for medical records to be kept up to date do take her back to the GP (or request a second opinion) when possible 😊

If you're on Facebook, look for the birthmark support group. Lots of parents on there, plus a couple of specialists including one at Great ormond Street hospital. It's a fantastic source of information and support.
My daughter has just 2 facial strawberry marks - I believe above a certain number they sometimes want to do an internal scan but people on that group can give you better advice than I can.

Purpleartichoke · 27/01/2020 15:47

Because there are so many, I would want a second opinion just for my peace of mind.

I was born with a very large one on my neck. Still there, but it’s under my hair. Dd has one on her eyelid and under the eyebrow, but it faded to nothing.

CountFosco · 27/01/2020 15:53

I think because she has so many she should be checked to make sure she has no internal ones. But it might depend if they are raised or not.
