To get adult size furniture for my small toddler’s room

She’s 14 months old and still sharing my room at the moment, in her own cot. We’ve just moved to a bigger place so she can have her own room so now I need to get her some furniture.

I’ve been browsing online and seen loads of expensive nursery furniture sets, but she already has a cot and I’d prefer not to spend loads on furniture that’ll need to be replaced in a few years.

My nearby charity furniture shop has some brand new ex-display stuff for sale, I could get her a really really nice adult sized wardrobe, chest of drawers and bedside table for about £150 altogether.

AIBU to just get adult sized stuff now and think she’ll grow into it? Her tiny clothes would look kind of ridiculous hanging in a full size wardrobe but I can live with that, are there any other drawbacks to not getting kid sized things that I’m not thinking of?

Thanks

I’ve never bought nursery sized furniture. It’s only good for a short amount of time.

Parker231 · 26/01/2020 20:03

Other than the cot, the furniture we bought was regular bedroom full size furniture. As soon as you put nursery in the title, the prize goes up. Nursery furniture imo is a waste of money.

AngusDuck · 26/01/2020 20:03

We’ve always had adult sized furniture for our DC, nursery furniture is a ridiculous waste of money IMO. I just enjoyed having the extra storage space for other stuff whilst their clothes were little and didn’t take up much space! You can always add in extra shelves and rails too.

Waffles80 · 26/01/2020 20:05

Definitely don’t get toddler stuff. Complete waste of money. We’ve only ever had normal sized furniture, aside from cots. Once our twins were out of their cots at 16 months we bought single beds and bed guards.

It meant guests could stay in their room and they could use travel beds in our room. It also meant that when they needed us in the night we could get in a single bed with them which was a life saver in terms of settling them more quickly without being cold / uncomfortable ourselves.

NannyR · 26/01/2020 20:06

Definitely a good idea to buy adult sized stuff. You could fit a second rail in the wardrobe or put some drawers or plastic tubs in the bottom so you are maximising use of the space.

I don’t understand why anyone would buy kids furniture tbh . It lasts such a short time . Mine got normal furniture and a double bed each as toddlers . Only mattresses will need replacing .

lanthanum · 26/01/2020 20:07

Get an extra rail (you can probably get an expanding one that will fit any wardrobe), and then when she gets to the stage of getting her own clothes out, you can put the ones you want her to be able to get at on the lower rail (and the out-of-season ones and party frocks on the higher one).

coconuttelegraph · 26/01/2020 20:07

I'm not even sure I knew there was such a thing as nursery furniture when my dc were toddlers, of course you can buy normal stuff

Ohyesiam · 26/01/2020 20:08

It’s just a racket, totally unnecessary.

TheTrollFairy · 26/01/2020 20:10

I only have nursery furniture as I was given it for free. I wouldn’t have purchased it

ShinyGiratina · 26/01/2020 20:10

As the last in a line of children I got stuck with the miniture nursery furniture.
My DCs have had full proper furniture right from the start (other than the essential things like a cot!)

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/01/2020 20:11

Our ds went straight from a cot to a standard single bed (with a bed guard). I couldn't see the point of getting a toddler bed and then a couple of years replacing it again.

Yorkshirepudding1987 · 26/01/2020 20:11

We bought regular sized wardrobe and chest of drawers. Miniature wardrobes are just a complete waste of money in my opinion.

bridgetreilly · 26/01/2020 20:12

Child-sized furniture is a relatively new thing invented by furniture manufacturers to make you have to keep buying more stuff. There's absolutely no need for it. Just get good, full-sized things that will last.

Coughsyrupsucks · 26/01/2020 20:13

I made the massive mistake of buying a baby sized chest of drawers. But it was a good wooden one and she loves it still. But the problem is she’s now trying to ram a 17 year old’s clothes into it. Grin

JoJoSM2 · 26/01/2020 20:14

I’ve never got tiny furniture. You need lots of room to store all the stuff they’re using as well as old/future clothes and toys etc.

JustFinished · 26/01/2020 20:16

Why do you need special nursery furniture apart from a cot? We bought a set just because it was the same price as just the cot, we never put the wardrobe up, it’s in the garage still in the box. I don’t really understand how a children’s wardrobe is different? Just buy an extra rail for inside a normal wardrobe and you’ve got 2 rows of clothes instead of 1. You don’t need a changing table at 14 months, you can just change them on a mat on the floor much safer anyway by that point.

Thewheelsarefallingoff · 26/01/2020 20:26

I've never bought child size furniture either. Definitely buy normal size.

carly2803 · 26/01/2020 20:39

i didnt even know we were meant to?!

mine have always had normal adult furniture!

MrsWolf2 · 26/01/2020 20:41

Right, full size furniture it is then, thanks.

And thanks for the tip about putting an extra rail in, will definitely do that Smile

Get the normal stuff but please please fix it to the wall

Nearly lost DD when she was a baby/toddler because of our failure to do just that.

tealandteal · 26/01/2020 20:48

Agree with the fixing to the wall but consider whether you need a wardrobe at this stage at all. We have a full size chest of drawers which fits all of DS clothes. He has more floor room and we will get a wardrobe when he can hang clothes up.
