To wonder what Instagram is actually for?

I know you could ask the same question about any social media but Facebook seems to be for friendship. I used to be on Instagram because it had cool photo filters and you could use it to make pictures look arty. I recently looked at my account again and it just seems to have changed a lot (it’s been a while since I used it)

Now it seems to be a narcissists paradise! Loads and loads of pictures of women wearing outfits- trendy40yearold type stuff posting their daily outfits and people putting endless pictures about their bloody houses and holidays. It’s like everyone needs to have a curated reel of images to show off how great their life is.

Aibu- why? What’s it for? I get Facebook as you can stay in touch with people. I just don’t get Instagram (because I am old maybe?!)

Can't help OP. I find it very tiresome and uninteresting and I really have tried.
I get it with FB which I use a lot as I have friends and family scattered all over the world. Instagram seems to me to be just a really wanky extension of Facebook.

MyuMe · 26/01/2020 17:05

My own personal photo album. My extended family like to see it.

With 5 years worth of photos on there, I do occasionally like to scroll through it all and see the places I've been and things I've done.

It isnt for anyone but me.

Tombliwho · 26/01/2020 17:06

I really like Instagram more than facebook. I'm quite a visual person and really enjoy accounts of people that travel and take interesting photos. I also enjoy lots of food and cooking accounts.
Not interested in instamums or celebs.

Hedgehogblues · 26/01/2020 17:06

I personally post quotes and images relevant to my trauma recovery journey

Orangeblossom78 · 26/01/2020 17:06

I don't get it either. Only went on recently as MIL wanted to share some pics of something and a friends animal sanctuary pics...Seems a bit weird.

TorkTorkBam · 26/01/2020 17:07

I am quite old and still I laughed my head off at your post. What's your opinion on the music in the charts?

Orangeblossom78 · 26/01/2020 17:07

It seems less cluttered than FB which I deleted.

MyuMe · 26/01/2020 17:08

I prefer Instagram.

Facebook is people sharing endless crap from silly pages they follow.

You can't do that on instagram: by that I mean share content from another page. You can like someone elses posts and save them but that's it.

Facebook is too full of junk and many peoples accounts are just ads and memes they have shared and nothing else

FlashesOfRage · 26/01/2020 17:08

Instagram is the place where you can indulge in posting pics of literally everything and anything from your life... stuff that you know would be seen as boring and self indulgent on FB lol!

MondeoFan · 26/01/2020 17:08

I actually prefer Instagram to Facebook. I've met some great likeminded people from extended breast feeders to others that enjoy Florida same as me and I like looking at their pics for ideas of where to go, I also like looking at people's pictures of their food and what they cook

AngelinaGrimke · 26/01/2020 17:10

My SIL goes out for a coffee and posts a photo of a cup of frothy coffee. Often with lipstick stains around the rim.

Confused
Peachypips78 · 26/01/2020 17:10

I really like it for ideas. For example, I follow some fabric artists, crochet people and other creative sorts. I pull recipes from eg Nigella or Tom Kerridge.

I like quirky interiors too and there are quite a few of those.

I also follow body positive influencers who remind me that all bodies are beautiful, and I quite like the fashion ideas they have.

I actually don't enjoy following people I know as much as it's a duplicate of FB and can be boasty.

Sparklesocks · 26/01/2020 17:10

Very simply it’s an app for sharing photos. How you use it varies on the type of person you are. Some people post nice food they d cooked, others use it for fashion shots, nice holidays, some use it share pics with their friends and families. If you don’t like it, don’t use it - or unfollow accounts you aren’t keen on. It’s yours to curate after all.

AmazingGreats · 26/01/2020 17:11

I think it's my favourite social media platform for its simplicity.

Morgenrot · 26/01/2020 17:11

I like it. I've been on there for several years (before it was full of adverts and paid partnerships) I like the anonymity and find it easy to find information.
I've only recently joined Facebook and it's that I don't really get. Smile

Everythingnotsaved · 26/01/2020 17:12

@TorkTorkBam 😂 I’m in my 40’s so I get your point. It still seems a really weird thing though- in 100 years will people look back and say ‘remember that time when people spent their free time posting daily pictures of their clothes and wall paper’

OP posts:
FlashingFedora · 26/01/2020 17:12

I've no idea what it's meant to be for as I've not long joined. Also a visual person and I just use it to look at nice photos of things I'm interested in. I mainly follow photographers of nature/wildlife/travel/interior design, that sort of thing. I don't follow individuals as such.

alphajuliet123 · 26/01/2020 17:12

Instagram seems to turn normal people into self-obsessed wankers. The end.

Daffodil77 · 26/01/2020 17:13

I like that it opens up the world of shopping small to me, mostly handmade kids clothes. Primarily I liked that by following someone they don't automatically follow me. I can put photos up of my dd knowing exactly who can see them and that that doesn't have to include every Tom dick and Harry that I chose to follow. I'm thinking more small businesses.

Newmetoday · 26/01/2020 17:15

Depends who you follow, surely. I follow photography accounts. If the people you follow are narcissists (they’re not really) then unfollow them. It says more about you if you are following them

Orangeblossom78 · 26/01/2020 17:16

How do you meet people on it though? Am I missing something. (a PP mentioned they had met interesting people there).

Do you mean looking at their pictures or something?

Jeleste · 26/01/2020 17:17

I prefer instagram to facebook because it has less advertising and click bait articles. I love seeing photos of people i dont see often and seeing what they are up to, their holidays, pets, kids etc.
I cant scroll through my facebook news feed because its full of crap and maybe every 10th article is from an actual person.
I post in instagram for friends and family and have a very limited amount of accepted people only, so the updates i see are really only from people im actually interested in.

Everythingnotsaved · 26/01/2020 17:23

Maybe it’s a bigger question about posting every single aspect of our life online- who gives a fuck if you have a new dress or bed or chair or vase or whatever? What’s the bloody point?

OP posts:
MyuMe · 26/01/2020 17:27

@Everythingnotsaved speak for your own friends.

They sound utterly boring. None of mine really do that.

I like to see where they go on holiday or weekends as it gives ideas.

I also follow alot of hashtags. I love animals and for the specific breeds that I like, I follow the #'s for them.

It's delightful seeing photos of them in the wild and in zoos that people have taken.

Your friends sound dull

MyuMe · 26/01/2020 17:27

And you are free to delete Instagram if you don't like it OP
